GM is smart to cut their losses. They were dumb to try to get into this business to begin with. This is a software problem not a hardware one. GM does not have the software engineering talent that can do this nor deep enough pockets to afford the losses during development.
@tribalypredisposed15 күн бұрын
Mary just had no way to know, it wasn’t dumb it was just a decision she had no ability to make. The vast majority of “experts” were saying that vision only is impossible, in the last year even several have claimed level five autonomy isn’t possible until 2050 at the earliest, and then she had this company using LIDAR that looked to be well along on autonomy, because LIDAR does allow fast and relatively easy progress to a local maximum that is pretty good, but will never result in level five. I also think that any company not lead by Elon Musk would have failed with the vision only approach. They would not get the world class talent, and they would not have the daring to completely change their approach multiple times. Two years ago Tesla effectively circular filed the work they had done the prior six years to go neural network programmed, and it is very hard to imagine other companies would ever do something like that. On top of that, these other companies don’t have the data needed and never had a path to obtaining it, so really LIDAR is the best they could do, and not good enough.
@nickmcconnell129115 күн бұрын
@ Agreed. Good summation. Yeah I don't see other companies able to dump what they've been doing all together and start down a different path like Tesla can and does. Sunk cost bias. Tesla's ability to do that is one of Elon's greatest management super powers. It shows either arrogance or supreme confidence. I think it's the latter because Elon knows coding and neural net capabilities well. He also knew that there was no physics reason that camera data shouldn't be sufficient.... just as two camera inputs are good enough for humans to drive. Years ago I worked for IBM during the time UPS was training up neural nets to do all their delivery route planning. It's incredible to see how good they get and how quickly... given enough data and reinforcement training.

It would have been interesting had Kyle Vogt (Co-founder & former CEO) had decided to work with GM in 2016 on equipping GM vehicles with a minimal sensor array & an inference computer to create a L3 system. They could update these vehicles OTA as the fleet grew, training models improved, compute scaled, and the ADAS SW architecture changed.... like Tesla. Think of where GM would be today if that was the case. heck, just imagine if they integrated this into only the chevy bolts as a proof of concept. U.S. Chevy Bolt sales from 2017 to 2023: approximately 203,482 units. Not as much as tesla ofc, but certainly enough to get some things figured out.

I will never understand how the legacy auto manufacturers haven't all banded together to solve their Tesla problem. If every car from every company outfitted their cars with the hardware for self driving (like Tesla has), they would have more data data collection points than Tesla. If they all worked with an AI company they try the same thing Tesla is doing, and make it available on non-EV vehicles as well. Most of the companies appear to hate each other more than they love themselves.

The situational appraisal and correct response part of the FSD AI in nearing human level or better. Now they need to turn their attention to some of the physical condition things that also bother human drivers. Such as sun glare in the cameras, lens contamination, fog, ice, snow etc. Expand the visual spectrum of the light sensitive camera chips so they see well past infrared and ultraviolet etc. Get the cameras to "always see" under all conditions, and have better vision acuity than humans.
