I wish more companies would do this, instead of their preoccupation with the next earnings call. It makes a lot more sense than trying to do this type of research on their own. These are 5-10 year out investments, probably no impact on their near term EV developments.

Engine efficiency, battery technology ( density, longevity, charging/discharging speed, safety), software including autonomous driving, and manufacturing efficiency are the elements of EV dominance. It's not a surprise current automotive companies investing in them aa they are financially focused over innovative focused. The minimal amount indicates a foot in door approach blocking others over genuine interest in the technology.

Battery tech is the number one hurdle holding back foreign EV makers. Chinese dominance in producing fast charging, durable, high density, and cheap batteries gives EV makers there a big competitive advantage. Even when foreign companies do eventually get the tech, Chinese battery makers have moved the bar by then. In a few years though EV battery tech will likely shift from being more about cost rather than innovation. Once EVs batteries all reach a certain threshold, further innovation becomes law of diminishing returns. It won't stop completely of course but other vehicle features will start to play a bigger role in what consumers buy if any EV consumers choose gets at least 500 miles and charges in 5-10 minutes.. After that threshold is reached, the companies that spends a lot of R&D money to get small EV battery upticks, will have to compete against cheaper commodity batteries that most consumers see as good enough for their needs. While the demand for higher density batteries will remain (e.g for exotic cars, aircraft, etc) those premium batteries will probably become too expensive for most EV use cases.

Sept 2024 News on Mitra Chem: "Stateof Michigan's CompetitivenessFund have selected Mitra Chem, a leading innovator in battery materials, for up to $125 million in awards. This substantial funding, with additional funding anticipated from the state of Michigan, will support Mitra Chem to establish a cutting-edge battery material manufacturing facility in Muskegon, Michigan. The site will be the first mass production facility for lithium iron phosphate cathodes in North America"

Is it possible to fit these batteries into a car that normally uses a Lithium Ion battery? Or is this only for the latest GM electric cars?
@jamesvandamme77862 ай бұрын
Batteries are a complete system, with cooling, charging, and monitoring/control subsystems. They're not swappable like D cells, but there will be a dedicated replacement & upgrade industry when enough of them get on the road. However, in most cases the batteries will outlive the rest of the car then get sold as replacements, used as stationary storage, or recycled. So be happy with the battery that came with the car, and if not, get another car. There will always be hotrodders who swap things around, like they did with engines. But that's a hobby, not a practical solution to "old" batteries.

I think people are kind of underestimating GM's EV efforts. Yes, they stumbled with the Chevrolet Blazer EV from late in 2023, but have made it up with the vastly superior Chevrolet Equinox EV that came out recently. I hope GM eventually switches to batteries that use very little to no liquid electrolytes, given the innumerable problems with leaking electrolyte fluids causing battery fires that are very hard to extinguish and emit a large amount of very toxic smoke.

Talk is cheap performance counts and GM does not perform. Everyone knows by now that to build a compelling EV you must do the hard work. Start with a clean sheet and develope from ground zero. GM is incapable of doing the hard work. They are hoping someone will do the hard work and they will take the profits. Sorry GM it just doesn’t work that way. I ‘m Mary has the concept of a plan. I’m not sure how you think investing in multiple partnerships, with multiple different types of leading research and development organizations for battery technology is a bad thing. This is literally how a company like GM invests too sure, they have competitive products now and in the future. This is why the range of investments are for different types of battery and formulations Plus they are also licensing CATL to deal with today’s problems. Framing this as distracted or erratic as you’ve done is incorrect. This is coming from a fan of yours who likes 90% of your videos. Just not this one because it’s an unfair characterization.

Based on all this most recent focus on throwing money around at battery research and developers, it's clear GM has no real intention of scaling its EV production to lower the cost of its EVs anytime soon. This is the same game of charades GM played back in the later '90s and early 2000s that started with their canceling of the EV1, their Electric S10 and its entire stable of hybrid cousin vehicles, rather than moving forward with the Lithium-ion battery available at that time. Simultaneously, GM let Toyota take over GM's lead in electrification with relatively poor performing, though more fuel efficient at 50 mpg, engine load-leveling, CVT-like hybrids, namely the Prius. At that time, the Li-ion battery had already been proven capable in portable electronic devices like Sony's Walkman. But, instead of pursuing this proven, much higher energy-density Lithium battery technology that was on GM's roadmap for its 3rd generation EVs, to improve immediate-term profitability, GM's CEO and Chairman Jack Smith shut it all down with the GM board's approval, except for making claims and performing research on dead-end hydrogen fuel cells. The 3rd generation Lithium battery was on GM's roadmap to replace the Advanced Lead-Acid and the more advanced, higher energy-density Generation-2 Nickel Metal Hydride (NMH) battery that was also put into the EV1 and Electric S10 pickup. At the same time, Toyota was also experimentally producing / test-marketing fully electrified RAV 4s, but following GM's canceling its EV1 and foregoing production of any of its stable of hybrids, Toyota also shut down their EV testing in the U.S., until starting up another round of market testing with Tesla and Panasonic in 2012-2014.

I respect the work you put into your videos. I find it really baffling that all the major crypto KZbinrs are only looking at pure waves and completely ignoring the broader narrative of why BTC is pumping and why the future outlook may not be as optimistic as it seems. It's kind of irresponsible to note the fact that every ETF launch so far has caused a major spike in BTC's spike. Already on shaky ground with historically low volume and near pure whale pumps, we narrowly avoided a simple bear market........ I have managed to grow a nest egg of around 210k to a decent 932k in the space of a few months... I'm especially grateful to Aria Cookings, whose deep expertise and traditional trading acumen have been invaluable in this challenging, ever-evolving financial landscape.

Do 800V batteries cost more? Not in a simple materials sense, i.e. cell or battery BoM, or at least not unless some novel and expensive materials are used. So, 800V LFP batteries are no more expensive than bog standard 400V LFP batteries. You just put more cells in series. Manganese is a low cost material. In volume - the real issue here - it could actually bring costs down. At least that is what some capable battery scientists are saying in China.

GM’s Ultium brand meant nothing to customers and was built around NMCA chemistry, but has shifted to LMFP to mimic CATL’s high density batt., with additional technologies to increase the capacity and work toward solid state prismatic cells. GM now has 12 different EV models, the most in the industry, with rapidly increasing sales, so I salute them for their efforts and plan to sell my Tesla’s for GM EV’s one day.

You should try it out. More range would be nice for long-distance, cross-country drives, particularly if towing or carrying something on your roof rack, but it's truly not necessary.
