Found this interview in our archives from 2019 - but affirms why General Motors invested in Pure Watercraft to power their EB product line. Everything Annie and Ed shared is valid today with this exciting product and company. TGB is pleased to see a company stay true to its values and see success.

Really enjoyed finding out about this outboard. Just wondering if it can be translated to a narrowboat engine that generally travels at walking pace. The battery charge would last quite a long time, however it would also be powering the boat's internal systems too so that would reduce the time. The problem would be that there is no infrastructure on our canal system for charging an electric narrowboat. Nice thought though. 🙂

I think narrowboats are a prime candidate for electric power. It may still take some time for products to be made available for retrofitting older boats and for infrastructure to be made available for charging etc. The electric power market for boating is growing at over 10% per year and eventually this will lead to a vast number of products at a broad range of prices made available to the consumer. I truly believe that.

We need a 100 HP

Envoy, out of Norway launched a 120 HP and a 300 HP outboard electric motor last year. See www.evoy.no/evoy-outboard-electric-boat-motor/ We will definitely be seeing more of these higher HP motors from new manufacturers but also the large brands like Mercury, Honda, Yamaha and more. But all at a premium price tag for the near future.

As battery tech improves, Id really like to see a company offer a battery that is in fact multiple smaller units that can be connected together. I have a 19' deck boat with a 150 on it. Of course it wasn't designed around a battery so going forward, repowering it, there wont be a dedicated spot for a battery pack. If one could be put in to the boat wherever you can find space (IE where the fuel tank was, under seats, etc.) you'd really have a winner.

Great idea! A modular battery system is evolving, at least in Europe. A friend of mine living in Germany, has just converted his home to Solar (photovoltaic) Power AND is now converting his RV to a similar system. It is based on modular battery design similar to this: "BMZ Hyperion 12.5 Solar Battery System is modular in design and allows easy and reliable installation as well as future expansion of the storage system if higher energy volumes become necessary. The “Made in Germany” product can be equipped with a minimum of three and a maximum of six helios modules with a total capacity of up to 18 kWh. High quality lithium-ion battery cells are built into the Hyperion." see www.zerohomebills.com/product/bmz-hyperion-12-5-modular-12-5kw-solar-battery-system/ We are hoping the modular battery system will also be developed for Marine applications. ~TGB

I'm just wondering if there is a plug so you can plug in a solar panel to charge le batteree while you are out at sea. Here in Western Staraleah there is alot ov Sun\Rah that could top up charge while you fish during le day.

a) they absolutely ruined that sea-sled with that unforgivably un-cool thing on the transom. 30mph and its the equivalent of 3 gallons of gas on a 40hp outboard? who would buy this? also at 5:35 he talks absolute rubbish about fish being scared of a gas motor lol. Any Tuna fisherman will tell you they are actually attracted to the sound as it sounds like something vibrating/wounded.
@TheGreenBoater Жыл бұрын
I suppose the sea-sled application of the electric outboard is a matter of taste. It is certainly a stark contrast of the old and the new in boating. I personally think it looks great and the message it sends is change is coming for propulsion in the marine sector. Much like the electric auto market - early adopters will accept these innovative power options until mainstream (and new) manufacturers create cost effective and practical options for new and repowering from gas to electric. The reference to fish was an actual test they performed with a professional bass fisherman in a tournament. The bass folks were the ones that praised the quiet motor and ability to approach fish quietly and effectively. I dont think this motor is designed for the offshore tuna market. Appreciate your comments! TGB

Glad I still have all my 2 strokes, they will be with me until Iam gone. Electric is a big nope.
@TheGreenBoater2 жыл бұрын
That is understandable. As regulatory bodies begin to roll out EPA standards for OB carbon emissions we may start seeing manufacturers phase out older engines. Fossil burning marine power is here to stay for the foreseeable future. At The Green Boater we encourage the boating community simply to be more aware of our responsibility to keep oceans clean. For some that may mean repowering to more eco-friendly options, for others it may be as simple as using biodegradable cleaners or non-toxic paints. Thanks for your comments! ~TGB

@@TheGreenBoater a 2 stroke thats been around for a few years let alone 30 is going to be FAR greener than building these things and the battery packs and all the charging stuff you need, not to mention cost to performance ratio this is a big nope for me anyway:)

What type of boat do you have?

Thanks for this video! As someone that has been waiting far too long for my pre-order Pure Watercraft motor I would be curious if they gave you any insight on shipping delays and how many pre-orders they actually have vs units shipped. Trying to be patient with Pure because I really believe in the tech but having a brand new boat sitting in a garage with no motor is getting really old.

We do not have this information. Have you tried contacting them directly? Have you placed a preorder? ~TGB

@@TheGreenBoater Sure would be nice if they were forthcoming with that info. I've spoken with people that have had pre-orders for so long that they have since purchased other motors. In my case I have a brand new pontoon boat sitting in a garage since last June because I don't have a motor and Pure will not provide any guidance on when to expect one. Very frustrating.

@@bertsadventures9974 I would be frustrated as well. I have not spoken directly with them since the Seattle Boat Show. I can try to reach out to see if they can give us an update on their delivery plans. I suspect their new partner, General Motors, may have a hand in their production and delivery priorities? Thank you for the heads up. Hopefully we can get some clarity for you. ~TGB

As of today their website still has pre-order forms www.purewatercraft.com/product/pure-outboard/ No update on when these will begin shipping. In January 2022 Greenstock reported they expected Pure Watercraft to begin shipping in late 2023. We are all keeping a close watch on this. Their design and concept is a winner. Hoping to see these units out on the waterways very soon!
