Thanks Scott! This was the ticket. I inherited this same set of roof racks from my brother, but he didn't remember how they worked. Without any instructions there was no way that I could figure out how the mechanism worked. I just happened upon your video which I am very glad that you posted.

I really appreciate every comment, Ken, so thanks. I made the video on a whim, hoping it might save a few people from the hours of puzzled frustration I had just gone through. Blown away by the fact it's gotten close to 8,000 views, and dozens of grateful responses. Yay, internet!

Thank you so very much! This video saved my day. I guess your rack is actually a Thule branded as GM, because it looks very similar to mine. Anyway, now I now that the key needs to be in a HORIZONTAL position to be unlocked. That was not obvious to me :)

Super helpful! How do I adjust the clamps to change it to a bigger car??
@ScottRollans5 жыл бұрын
On mine, at least, the feet slide freely when the rack isn't in place. The inside "jaw" of the clamp slides up slightly, unlocking the foot.

Yes, it did help! Thanks for sharing. I found these for next to nothing at a secondhand store without keys but they are unlocked. I'm trying to fit them on my Volkswagen Jetta even though they say GM. I just didn't know how to tighten them up and I was going to have to MacGyver it. But now I know. Thank you. One question, do I still need to lock it is that just for security?

how do you take it off wen you dont have the key, bought a wrx with a thule rack but no key for it .
@ScottRollans6 жыл бұрын
Hacksaw? Angle grinder? Pipe wrench? You could check with a locksmith, but failing that you may have to trash it to get it off. That's kind of the idea behind locks and keys.
@paulruss71876 жыл бұрын
@@ScottRollans You can buy a new key on ebay for under 8 dollars. Just need the number off your rack.

Yes, although I rarely lock them when I use them. I figure the odds are pretty low that someone would want to steal them AND know how to remove them.
