We appear to be at a ‘hinge point’ historically and uncertainty in what comes next seems to the political mood on both sides of the Atlantic. Alastair Campbell had the real zinger comment for Nigel Farage: put your ideas down on paper; what does Brexit mean? How does it work? Farage is like Trump, the ‘medium is the message’ (as McLuhan says). Well. If your stern believe is a factor in negotiations, good luck. Normally it is more sensible to have a realistic strategy and an idea where your ZOPA (Zone of proposed agreement) is to be. Brexit was loaded with expectations and vague ideas: - stop immigration - get the UK financially better off by saving the money going to Brussels - getting better deals with the worlds leading nations etc. Just check what the UK got so far and make a list of the advantages of leab´ving the EU. Normally the only point is "soverignty". Which the UK now has back. But others have soverignty too. So? Again: I want to hear what is working better now than before existing the EU?

There are two meanings to the word Brexit. One is a concept and a theory of British complete independence from Europe and the European Union. The second is how we go about achieving this in practical terms. It is like if we are nationalising or privatising an industry. There is the concept or theory of an industry owned by the government or owned by shareholders and there is how you set about achieving this in practice which involves a lot of work and deliberation by ministers and the civil service. The problem with some Brexiteers is that with their "Brexit means Brexit means Brexit" they refuse to accept that there are these two meanings. They think in their primitive way the first encompasses everything.

There was never any agreement about what leave meant ... And the thinking that you have, that you can somehow just walk away from a geopolitical context and act like it doesn't exist is just inane. It's literally impossible to not have a relationship with the EU. The whole concept that there can be 'no deal' is a mirage. all it meant was that they didn't bother to define what the relationship would then be... and while you lot moan that it didnt give you what you thought you wanted because of tory incompetence - it was exactly that NOT making a deal that led to that.
