Teimur Radjabov was kind of a chess unicorn as well. He was at his peak 2793 (top4) and qualified to candidates in 2013 (age 26ish). He got totally crushed and his rating went down to 2696 (top44) (age 29ish). However he made a huge comeback and his rating went back up to 2765 (top9) (age 32ish). He even qualified for 2020 (33) and 2022 (35) candidates.

I have no idea why Hikaru thinks it's so unique that he got his rating back to a very high level after a slump, there have been many top players who did that. Ivanchuk for example who dropped or almost dropped below 2700 several times in his career only to rise up again, at one time becoming number 2 in the world after such a slump. Mamedyarov is another good example, he reached his peak rating of 2820 (the sixth-highest of all time) after a long period of hovering around 2720 or 2730. Tons of other examples, I think Topalov also vanished out of the top 20 for quite some time before making a huge comeback in the 2010s. Hikaru says it's not an ego thing but it's clearly an ego thing.
@varunmurali7912Ай бұрын
You guys didn't get what hikaru said.. all these players didn't drop below their league and got up.. they were already at the top.. whereas Anish is not at the same league he used to be
@hansmahr8627Ай бұрын
@@varunmurali7912 No, all these players had already been top players before those rating swings. Ivanchuk had quite extreme rating fluctuations throughout his career and many others became top players, experienced a slump and then worked their way to the top again. Right, he cares so little that he has to go on a rant on how he's better than Anish and how unique his comeback was and then he goes on another rant to explain for the 200th time that he really doesn't care. 2:29 Isnt draw the most probable outcome at the highest level of chess? And I don't think Anish's games have ended in draw THAT many times statistically. heck a lot of players would prefer to force opponent into a draw when they are on a losing position, because losing straight up means your rating goes down and in team events it may very well lead your team down. Draw is a much more preferable outcome than an uncertain victory.

Hikaru is quite insightful and naturally interesting/funny when he comments on things he's studied or read about. Would easily make a good diplomat or analyst of some sort (Anish Giri as well tbh whom I've noticed thinks deeply about current affairs although Hikaru is more light-hearted). Always interesting to hear what Hikaru or AG have to say on various subjects as both are fundamentally intellectually honest dudes (which I hope wouldn't change). On being an "influencer" though, I think Anish has mentioned in an interview with ChessBaseIndia (including Vidit too) that social media tends to incite negative drama due to algos when he was asked about Kramnik's Chesscom controversy (with influencers being incentivised to start drama for clicks at the expense of values like integrity, etc), so I can see why he dislikes it currently. Hikaru should not be taking AG's opinions personally. On being "World Champion", I think it's perfectly okay for players to have such aspirations and work towards it.
