In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a tricky chess opening gambit for White. It's called the Tennison Gambit which happens after the opening moves 1.e4 d5 2.Nf3 sacrificing the e4-pawn.
Although it occurs in the Scandinavian Defense in most cases, it may also transposition from other openings. In fact, you may even force/trick your opponents into the Tennison Gambit from other openings (as explained in this video lesson). One such example is the transposition from the Reti opening 1.Nf3 d5 2.e4.
This is an aggressive chess opening that has a lot of deadly tricks and traps. Most of your opponents will fall for the early queen trap which allows you to win the game in less than 10 moves!

The Caro-Kann transposes into it via the Caruana variation 1.e4 c6 2. d3 d5 3. Nf3, and so forth. White can also engage the trolling motor with 1. Nf3 d5 2. e4 dxe4 3. Ng5

In my opinion this is a very awful weapon. The thing I have against this is that there are not that many complications and diverse lines to confuse your opponent. The treats are pretty obvious and only worth the risk(gambit) in very fast time controls against an opponent who have never faced this. Otherwise is just trash.
@tomkinnally9656

The issue is that only really good players defend pawns. most lower ranked players just attack and let you take pawns. Any strategy that depends on your opponent defending a pawn is pretty useless.

This was one of the first gambits i played to get cheap wins, I found it more consistent to enter this line by transposing with the Reti (1. Nf3 d5 2. e4) as it was more common for an opponent to respond with d5 (most common reply) than if you open with e5 (5th most common reply). Great opening for crushing beginners, loses it's value when opponents know the simple refutation 5. Bxd3 Nc6.

Igor - this has a simple refutation which you didn't cover: h6 on the 4th move, as in 1. e4 d5 2. Nf3 dxe 3. Ng5 Nf6 4. d3 h6! and there are no good moves for the knight. Nxe4 leads to a queen trade which leaves white slightly worse - hardly a reason to play the Tennison. And Nh3 is too horrible to contemplate. That's why 4. d3 isn't even given in the lichess masters database (which only shows the options Nc3 and Bc4) it's just a mistake. And just to underscore how bad 4. d3 is black is also better after 5... e5 (instead of trading the knights and getting the queen trade).

@ 9:25 “And nothing can stop the checkmate” Well that’s not completely accurate. Qxe6… black has at least two moves. … Ne5 discover attacks the queen with the bishop on c8 and guarding f7, After QxN then Ne8 and if the Q resumes attack on the a1 diagonal and the bishop doesn’t take the Knight then follow up with N to d6 and the queen bishop check mate is stopped for now. Though as you say White is still completely winning. The other move is …Qd8 and sacrifices the queen. Thanks for these video I really enjoy them.

There's actually a way out of the trapped queen @2:44, you go PH4, then black goes NE8, and instead of losing queen, go PH5 to check the king. King usually hides in H7, which opens up QF7 as an escape route. I still don't like it though because in 2 moves black can get NxC2 and fork the rook, so it's better to drop down the queen and start preparing for that as well as the rest of the assault whti the extra bishop and knight by developing the bottom left corner pieces.
@Octoschizare
@Octoschizare 6 ай бұрын
Now I'm convinced that QxC7 is actually the best move, but you must follow it with pH4 then pH5+, opening up QF7 to escape when king hides. Their next plan is likely a 2 knight move to fork K&R at NxC2 but that is avoided by first going pC3 to stop that knight from coming down.

Maybe some people like to spend time remembering all kind of counters in hope their opponents react in some predictable way, however that's not the way most people play -- yes, some will devote hundreds of hours memorizing countless of moves -- but what does that really do to the fun factor - which is why the vast majority play? At sub 1000 play -this kind of stuff is irrelevant - and those who aspire higher also can and should expect so many other reactions......and you need to be creative enough to respond to those...
