Gnawholes 101 | Skaven Tactics & Strategy

Another sneaky tech, there’s no limit on the number of times a single unit can teleport. So for example I can jump from one gnawhole to another and then back to the original one on the other side. This can be useful for a little bit of extra movement or to rearrange models, for example to swap the arrangement of stormfiend weapons. It also combos well with bridge as the bridge teleport is at the start of the movement phase and this is at the end, so you can bridge somewhere and then if you get a double turn, bridge back to your home gnawhole and then teleport to another gnawhole from there (only works if you can fit the unit wholly 6” of both, which is conveniently the exact size of a unit of 6 stormfiends)

One fun trick I personally use is to skitterleap a grey seer to an aggresive gnawhole, drop an endless spell on the opponent, then jump back through the gnawhole to safety. This can make them commit more towards screening the gnawhole as now they have to prevent a lone grey seer from fitting anywhere within that 6 inch bubble or have something like a warp lightning vortex on their army, potentially even clearing the unit denying your gnawhole teleport.

As always, amazing content my dear rat players. Deployment is one of the trickiest moments for Skaven, I feel. Since we relay so much on our heroes' buffs in key moments of the turn (with small range a lot of the time), and we need to present enough threats on the map to force the enemy to play in a way where you can take advantage of their mistakes, it is super important to make a good deployment. I know this is more or less true for every army, but (maybe I'm biased here) I feel like mistakes for skaven are a lot more expensive, so it's crucial for us to do it well, and gnawholes are a key part of our deployment, so every bit of useful info about different tactics for them, or how to approach their deployment, is hugely appreciated. any updates on using these in 4th. just tried skaven and the gnawhole doesnt have a per phase limit so can i move a few units through each one?

Great video and looking to use them in an upcoming casual event. One thing I don't fully understand is what you mention on keywords and the monstrous action (at about 6:30). Looking in the AoS app I don't see any keywords on the gnawholes, and the rules seem to state that the terrain loses all it's abilities? Anyways hope there's more skaven tactics on the way!?

Just released a new one today actually! Happy to explain though: So the gnawhole has the "gnawhole" keyword and in the explanation of how they function the explanation only says it can come out of a "gnawhole" so if the gnawhole gets smashed via a monstrous action then they can still exit from a gnawhole because terrain that gets smashed still keeps its keywords it just doesn't get to use the abilities on the card. If however it said in the explanation that you can go into AND come out of a friendly gnawhole then keyword wouldn't save it but they just used keywords to define when it could come out. Hope that was helpful! Any more questions feel free to ask!

Question, at 23:07 mark, when sending 2 WLC trough into the 3th gnawhole. Do they must use a move effect to use the gnawhole? Can they still shoot after coming trough in the same round, or do they have too wait for Round 2?

With the first example of Matthias using the defensive gnawholes to criss cross the cannons for extra movement, is it possible to sequence in such a way that you can overcharge both cannons? Or would you have finish with both cannons near one gnawhole like in the second example?

If you Criss-Cross and leave them in different areas you can only overcharge if you have more than one engineer because the check for when you can overcharge happens in the shooting phase--or of course if you unleash hell. If that isn't super clear feel free to leave me a reply and I'll try and elucidate!

1. Around the 5:40 mark. Everywhere else I’ve researched is saying the teleport is TOTALLY shut off if an enemy is within range of the gnawhole. Can you point me to the source you are citing?
