Fun theory time: One of reasons for the 3 Dogs, is because they are also inspired by the rhyme "Rub-a-Dub-Dub". Where the 3 main characters are the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker. Masschiff looks like a hot dog and Mabosstiff's tough look/jaws could tie in with the butcher. Daschbun line being bread is the baker and the Houndstone line being connected to tallow and candles would make it the candlestickmaker.

I'm surprised that, for Greavard and Houndstone, you didn't mention the sheer *abundance* of ghost dogs present in Spanish mythology. The Pesanta and the Dip from Catalonia and the Urco from Galicia and Asturias are some examples of this. Many of these ghostly dogs are said to be big, black and intimidating, so maybe they played a role in Mabosstif's design too. The Inugami, or spiritual possession of a dog in Japanese folklore, is also worth mentioning I think.

the key words are "it is said", in other words they are essentially saying "we have been told this story but we can't necessarily verify it as 100% accurate". Also, it doesn't say that that's how every single Greavard came about, just that there's a story that goes around of how this is the origin of one Greavard. It's the same with the kid that woke up being transformed into a Kadabra or whatever that dex entry was, it's not saying that every Kadabra ever is a kid that's been transformed, it's simply stating that it's just one particular notable instance.

@mewtubeelias-noskillarts Жыл бұрын
Like ypu said, Dachsbun in German basically translates to "baked dog". And I'm here to explain the names of the other dog Pokémon. Fidough's name in German is "Hefel" which pulls from "Hefe", the German word for yeast and "Dackel" (Dachshund), "hecheln" (panting) or "Welpe" (Puppy). Maschiff's name is a combination of mob anf mastiff. Mabosstiff's name also pulls from mastiffs and mastifioso. Greavard's German name is "Gruff" anf consist out of "Gruft", German for tomb and "wuff" the sound that dogs make in the German language. Houndstone's German name, Friedwuff is a combination of "Friedhof", the German word for graveyard and "Wuff" again. Also, something about the (German) pronpunciation of "Dachshund": The "Dachs" part would be pronounced like the "ducks". I don't really have a good English word to compare to the "hund" part of the word. It's like "hunt" but the 'u' is more pronounced like a double o. Either way, you can look up the correct pronounciation of Dachshund. And also, please Lockstin, make a video about explaining German Pokémon names.

Perhaps Fidough and Dachsbun’s connection with dogs and bread may take inspiration from dog biscuits (both are made from grain) and hot dogs which is a popular fast food sandwich named after dachshunds which are called sausage dogs named for their brown and long bodies. They’re debut in Paldea may reference the similar looking bush dogs and the reigon’s many dogs may reference the etymology of the Canary Islands, which was named for its population of dogs.

One thing that i noticed was that it wasn't only dachsbun's breed that had connection/roots with Germany Dachsbun's breads, replacing his ears, are based on the Vianinha/Viana Portuguese bread variant that had inspiration on the original Vienna or Kaiser rolls from Germany. The Vianinha variant is more faithful to the buns Dachsbun has on it's his ears, while the original Viena roll has a spiral cut in the middle of the bun, that more closely resembles Fidough's ears. Both are different but, in their own ways, they are trying to cut/create a shape of a flower in the bread. Thought it was an interesting thing to point out.

I have a few dogs of my own and honestly, all of the Paldea Doggos remind me of them. We have a Golden Retriever puppy that looks like Dachsbun, a Pyrenees Mountain Dog mix that is the spiting image of Mabosstiff (I love her so much) and... and an older dog... who isn't feeling too good... That aside, I really like all the new dogs, especially Mabosstiff. Even though it's supposed to be this mean, mafia mastiff, it's my kinda dog: lovable where it counts, powerful when it needs to be and will follow you to a wherever you go. Also, Arven's story broke me, because having a sick or hurt doggo is probably one of the saddest feelings a human can have. On Arceus, Arven deserves every happiness, every good thing. Good on him for never giving up on his good boy, who never gave up on him.

These dogs are so cute! I actually made a slideshow on Los Cadejos for Spanish class this week, comparing them to the Cù-Sìth. I wondered why they decided to give Arven a Mabosstiff even though it’s supposed to be the mean one, but this video taught me a lot.

Another reference to hound stone would maybe be Hachikō, a similar story about a akita inu who had an owner then the owner passes, after death, he waited for his owner until it died. Then it was memorialized in a statue of him in Shibuya Station in Japan

Thanks for mentioning the German name of Dachsbun. Hefel (Fidough) and Backel are my favorites of the new dog Pokémon. Maybe of all dog Pokémon in general. I am also in love with all these details. I died of cuteness when my Fidough evolved and its name is helping me out getting through my work. My co-worker who is also a Pokémon fan said I should take out the Dachsbun because they were well baked. I named my Dachsbun "Hermann" which is a dough it grows thanks to their yield and bacteria and you can pass them to a friend or neighbor who also can feed the dough to make it grow and you can make a yummy cake of the Hermann Teig and you can still save some dough or pass it again. I rather baked my Hermann. I got a Fidough caught in a rare ball so I bred a Shiny an traded the other dogs away with the fitting nickname.

I thought the large number of dogs was also a reference to the Canary Islands, which pulls it's name from Canis (The bird being named Canary was due to it being found there afterwards) as there were plenty of dogs living on the Islands

@14:10 I'm glad you put up a pic of Hachiko because that so was a tale of pain. A dog whose owner had died and this dog waited 10 years at a train station (the last place it saw its owner alive) just waiting for him to come home from work (the owner was a professor at a neighboring town's university in Japan. The dog walked him to the train station every day. The owner had a heart attack at work and died. He never came home on the train.)

Out of all the dog pokemon, none looked like my late boy. But when going through Arven's path with his Mabosstiff, I knew I wanted to get a shiny male Mabossitff. It took so many eggs, dark encounter boosting sandwiches, and a lot of running around.. But I got my shiny boy. Arven's story hit too close to home because my boy was weakened and ill. He was my best friend and I miss him dearly. But now I can go on adventures in Paldea with my boy. Barnaby lives on and he'll always be at the head of my team.

When you were talking about Gen 6 and 7, was the vastly lowered quality an intentional choice or what happened there? That looks strange coming from everything being smooth beforehand and going to being smooth again from Gen 9 on.

Guess obstagoon isn't in Gen 9 because it's afraid of dachsbun, a badger-hunting dog whose fairy type overpowers its dark type certainly doesn't seem like something obstagoon would want to come across! Not to mention, it'd probably do pretty well against typhlosion, being fireproof.

Hilariously, I heard that Eevee aren't based on anything in particular because the original idea was meant to evoke that feeling of seeing some small fluffy thing in your neighborhood that didn't belong there. Was it a cat? A dog? A fox? Maybe a rabbit? Some large rodent? All you can say is it was a brown fluffy thing that ran off.

The note about dog-friendly eating establishments throughout Spain (and other places, including Australia) provides insight into why Pokémon sit with their Trainers in Every Wich Way sandwich bars. 🥪 Many of them even have little beds right next to the table, and the animations are _so_ on-point! Some Pokémon yap as the Trainer tucks in, hoping for a little taste, while others maintain a fixed-gaze vigil on their human’s lunch, to the point they don’t even acknowledge when you try to talk to ‘em, just like real dogs! 🐶 Arguably the cutest by far are the ones all snuggled up in those soft, cosy beds, snoozing happily while their bipedal best bud bites into a beautifully baked baguette brimming with all the trimmings… *_(stomach growls)_* …okay, _maybe_ it’s time for a bitz’ o’ breakfast, heheh… 😅
