"Skinheads" *is* just referring to them being bald (or, more accurately, shaved). The Japanese word doesn't have the Neo-nazi association that it has in English, so translating it back into English as "skinhead" is not exactly accurate.
@onijester562 жыл бұрын
"Skinhead" is a reference to their being bald, and that's where the use of the name derives from...but given the real-world source of that name it's literally not "just". The way to think of it is that the "common insult" is 'Cueball'. "Skinhead" is a specific (racist/white-supremacist) type of 'Cueball'...which kinda seems like the opposite of what most people would probably assume. But America loves doing things the stupid way.

11:40 The Pokémon used by Poke Maniacs aren't choosed out of nowhere, all of them are from the Monster Egg Group. Many of them are based on dinosaurs and kaijus like Tyranitar (Godzilla), Nidoking (Baragon), Rhydon (very kaiju like), and Tyrantrum (is a T.Rex, of course), indicating there are fans of kaiju movies or dinosaurs enthusiasts. Not only that but many of them give hints on how to get rare Pokémon such as Lapras in G/S/S, and all of them stop appearing after gen 3 came out, sugesting there are the first Pokefans who outgrew the series when Pokémon became less popular overtime but still love the first generations, in other words there are the in universe Genwunners. 19:25 There are based on itako, blind seers of north Japan which are said to go through a hard training to channel their powers.

Some of the trainer classes, besides the "boss-battle" ones, have developed advanced AI and/or more competitively-viable Pokémon too, like Ace Trainers and Veterans. On the flipside, some juvenile classes have less of a clear AI, one that is closer to a generic wild Pokémon choosing its moves at random. These differences in battle ai are even present in a few post-game battle facilities. Come to think of it, I have *never* found a detailed source explaining the trainer AI systems. For context. The Japanese name of the roughneck has a specific context. While the term is used in America for a very specific kind of person, the term originally preferred to any shaved head working class tough guy. The kind of man who often joined other similar men in groups. And such men often have a narrow minded world view which led to the American ones having a very specific mindset about people outside their demographic.

The Rocker class has a cool sprite in FireRed and LeafGreen! I’m a little bummed this class didn’t stick around. The class is called “Denki Group” in Japanese, which is apparently a reference to a music group in Japan. Maybe the reason this class never returned is because the reference is dated now? Ah well. For some reason, the Tamer is a class that tends to use Pokémon exclusive to one version of the game. That explains why they use Golduck and Sandslash - Sandslash is even a counterpart to Arbok. Maybe the idea is that, as Tamers, they’re in possession of “rare” creatures? I dunno. The Collector class from Ruby and Sapphire onwards also uses version exclusive Pokémon, and I think that makes total sense for them.

Oh man, I’ve been wanting to do a casual essay on the trainer classes for years, so this is pretty awesome. In fact I was even thinking about it again recently because I was playing FireRed for the past few months and asked myself “Why are Bird Keepers almost always in the mid-to-late game? Surely trainers like that would be found in all stages? It’s not like bird Pokémon are exclusively power houses?” And other questions that may or may not deserve analysis. Another interesting aspect of the Ace Trainers worth talking about is that they’re most like the player character. They tend to have more type coverage, some of them talk about being League contenders, and most of them are found in the mid-to-late games usually before and in Victory Road. Also perhaps a little too much use of the G-word there. Like maybe once for context and then calling them by their proper name would’ve been more appropriate. Anyhow, happy about This series, can’t wait to see more of it because it has been a special interest of mine for a while. Probably started when I played Colosseum and was completely baffled by the completely generic non-specialized nonsense “trainer classes” like “fun old guy” and “bandana guy” and “glasses man”

As a firefighter myself I personally would also like to have water types for extiguishment, such as Blastoise and Wartortle. But also an Electric type for times when there is a downed power line and also Ghost/Fire/Fighting type for potential rescue. Some fire types are are immune to fire damage and would be excellent to send in for a search and rescue situation.

11:37 Holy crap I got featured in this??? Thanks Lockstin! Edit: Also Poke-Maniacs use mainly Pokémon from the Monster egg group! Funnily enough, a lot of Pokémon that are my favourite are Mons from the Monster egg group, which is an interesting coincidence since I chose the class because I feel that I know a lot about Pokémon

8:38 I mean Bruno uses one or two onixes or steelixes and in the rematch in Let's Go bizarrely, an Alolan golem. Even in the Gen 2 remakes he kept an onix until the rematch where he swaps it out with a hariyama and adds a lucario.

Fun Fact; in the UK, there was a very old (1922) song called The Laughing Policeman by Charles Jolly, it was so popular it lingered around until at LEAST the 80s, and was even in the 2016 animation adaptation of Ethel & Ernest. The image of a Jolly Red Faced Chubby Policeman has faded over time, for obvious reasons...but I do believe the Galarian Officer is based on that old trope over here

That disclaimer makes me wish that Arbok were made into a dark type in Gen 2 even more than I already do...
@Sakaajani36252 жыл бұрын
I strongly believe Arbok is going to get a regional variant that will be either part dark-type or dragon-type in the future. It’s one of the few Gen 1 Pokémon to not receive an upgrade of some kind: branched evolution, mega evolution, regional variant or Gigantamax form.
@JamesDavy20092 жыл бұрын
@@Sakaajani3625 If a part of Australia became a Pokémon region, you'll get your Arbok variant based on the inland taipan; or if a part of Africa got that treatment you could get one based on the black mamba. Both are fitting for the Dark type as they are two of the world's deadliest snakes.
@robertlupa82732 жыл бұрын
It's a real shame, since no Pokemon were retconned to be part-Dark, unlike the other "new" types, Steel and Fairy.

Bikers also use Muk and Grimer, a reference to the sludge and oil found in motorcycle engines. And Pokemon Maniacs use Pokemon mainly in the monster egg group.

Also worthy of note with skiers having flying types: Ski jumping and "Ski Flying" are a whole Olympic sport. Essentially, skis appear to have some mild aerodynamic properties that are used to extend aerial travel distances. This further proves that if humans can find a way to exploit the tiniest thing that gives them the ability to do thing but better, they'll absolutely milk it until it's gone

18:23 Pokéfans are not "geeky parents". They might seem that way to us, because they've made owning Pokémon such a big part of their identity, but remember, within the Pokémon universe, Pokémon are the equivalent of animals. It's not a niche, geeky hobby, it's more akin to someone owning pets. Pokéfans are more akin to "dog moms" or "crazy cat ladies".

Ya gym leaders and rivals are self explanatory, gyms hire certain archtypes to populate the gym but need to focus around the main type, if you're smart and well leveled they can be beaten, each leader has an ace and a signature TM move to raise the stakes. Rivals will have a mix of pokemon and challenge you at key moments, usually it's their own selection of the best pokemon of that region and the starter that beats you. Team rocket I found very interesting when researching, there are a lot of poison types and rattatta/zubat, annoying trashy pokemon they found, but also some fighting types and maybe a Hypno. Most are related to crime or the general toxic evil theme. Magma and Aqua however focus more on their specific type or mascots, Camerupt and Sharpedo
@robertlupa82732 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it was intentional, but perhaps Team Rocket's poison types (especially Koffing) are referecing rocket exhaust? Maybe that's a stretch.
