I always thought the nail in Curse's animation was a reference to voodoo dolls, where you'd impale the doll of someone you wanted to harm to put curses on them; only in this case the Ghost types are treating themselves as the dolls to do the job, and obviously driving a nail into yourself is going to hurt. In fact in Gold and Silver's beta, there was a scrapped voodoo doll Pokemon (giant nail through its chest and all) who's signature move was Curse
@jacobgalloway13924 жыл бұрын
I also that it was a visual reference to the “final nail in the coffin” meaning the thing that finally does you in. Which is itself a reference to coffins at one point in time being nailed shut

Yep. Thanks to the Silk Road some Middle Eastern (and African) culture was passed into the Orient. So voodoo making it into Chinese, and then Japanese, culture is totally plausible.

Or it could have defeatist and get a type change, or wimp out like Wimpod. Above half health it's fighting type, and below half it becomes flying and switches out or gets phys/spec attack down and speed up. I can't decide between defeatist or wimp out since both help expand on the gimmick, figuratively or literally running from the fight, but I do think a form and type change is in order to really sell it. Maybe it could be another tengu pokemon. In fighting form it punches with it's wings, and in flying mode the wings get unfurled and it starts flapping away

Also, speaking of Tomato Facts: The reason why people thought tomatoes were poisonous for the longest time was because they ate on lead plates. The juices would collect the lead particles, and then they'd consume it, poisoning the person. While it's not the EXACT explanation as to why it'd poison people (as in i could have gone more specific) but it's the main idea
@Insertia_Nameia3 жыл бұрын
But it is important to remember, some cultures already consumed a lot of lead. Lead is naturally very sweet. Some cultures, especially the nobility/rich, would add it in powder form to food and drinks to make it more palatable. So in some of those cultures that tried it and are off lead plates, they already had high amounts of lead poisoning so this would be a large dose that would easily tip them over into it being critical.

I think Eerie Light from Confuse Ray is more of a reference to ghost lights leading people astray, which is a pretty common myth. The lights appear in marshes or forests, and people follow them thinking they're fellow travelers or signs of civilization, but they just end up making people even more lost than they were. That sort of thing. It fits the Japanese name, and explains why "following the lights" (i.e. being hit by the move) always confuses the enemy.

I like to see ghost-type moves as more illusions and dark magic, hence the shadow moves and curse. And curse deals damage to ghost types because dark magic usually drains the soul, and ghost types are just souls
@korepandora4 жыл бұрын
I like to think that the curse move makes you sacrifice something in order to gain something (or in the ghost type case, to harm someone)
@richardvontersch45224 жыл бұрын
So If I had to guess why Marshadow's signature move, Spectral thief, steals stat buffs, I believe it is because shadows are typically considered like a part of your soul that reflects your skills and abilities, hence stealling from the shadow would be robbing the oppenent of their aquired strength(ie: stat buffs) . That is also why the Z-move is called soul stealing. Again this is just my crappy memory and I've at least over simplified the meaning, or just got it wrong.
@robertlupa82734 жыл бұрын
Makes sense to me.

maybe the idea is that Marshadow literally steals your shadow, so it is basically taking your soul and all the buffs in it

Think about Geko Moria in One Piece. THAT is a strong reason for Marshadow signature move to act like that.

I always imagined Shadow Punch to be like Janemba's moves from Dragon Ball Z. Where fists appear from portals (or out of no where). Haunter's detached fists would be particularly good for this.

When I thought of Confuse Ray and why it would be Ghost-Type, I immediately of something like how you may see orbs flying around or like the Kitsunebi legend; which the Kitsunebi is a double-whammy for Ninetales as it can learn both Confuse Ray and Will o' Wisp. I thought of how those orbs are said to lure travelers to their doom. Not directly harming them, but luring them into a trap in their confused curiosity.

Potatoes are also in the nightshade family. They can literally graft the two together, so you can grow both at the same time. (Never eat potato berries, they are deadly!) Fun fact: Neverending Nightmare is eerily close to the negative out of body experiences people who have nearly died report. While the good end has people going through a tunnel of light and wilding up in Heaven or somesuch, the opposite sees people hearing dark voices and evil arms dragging them down to Hell or the like.

23:20. Well, there's also seven points or stars that makeup the big/little dipper with one of them being the North Star. This attack also connects them into a similar in-game symbol. Other wise there is no obvious reference to Fist of the North Star. None, unless it references a constellation having each point punched or stabbed into someone's chest.

Ah, wait. You made the first of these ‘all moves of a type’ videos before Sword and Shield came out. You’ll have to make either a video on the remaining moves of the other types you preemptively already made videos for (correct me in the comments if I missed one or got one wrong, but I think those are Fighting, Steel, Dragon, and Fairy), Max and GMax moves included, or-now that the Crown Tundra has come out-a video on all of the moves that Gen 8 introduced, Max and GMax moves included. Also, you’d have to update your Gen 8 video with all the Pokémon that were introduced in the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra...

4:26 There’s also an ancient Roman way of cursing called “defixiones”, where the nasty thing you hoped to inflict on another was written on a piece of paper or thin lead sheet, rolled, and pierced with a nail. Or it could be a waxen tablet with a pin.
