Wow, the Go-Go's playing in a high school, what a treasure. This would have been just a few months after signing with IRS and releasing Beauty and the Beat. Our Lips Are Sealed was climbing the charts and would peak three months later. They had just returned from their first worldwide tour. What an exciting time for them.

I read that I.R.S. Records pushed them to perform before a well-scrubbed high school - to reach the broadest, “all-American” youth audience. The video, "Totally Go-Go's" was originally recorded to be a television special. Plus, I'm sure it was a cheap (if not free) venue.

Yep, I remember it clearly. I was a junior and they played in the gym. PVHS had it going on in the 80s. Oingo Boingo played at lunch in the quad a couple times and became our adopted school band. The office played Only A Lad over the speakers every morning before announcements in home room.

For those who say these are the wrong lyrics, you evidently don't know the music business. Haven't you ever heard of "Alternate Lyrics" before? Its not uncommon. I have demos as well as alternate lyrics from allot of bands on cds. Allot of artist have several versions to any one song, and then they'll lay a track down that will go on the album/nowadays cd. So there's probably a few more versions to this song here, that we just never heard yet. A great example is, buy the original album of "Street Survivors" by Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1977 Then buy the cd which came out AFTER there plane crash. On the 1977 album there's a song called "I Never Dreamed" & one called "You Got That Right" These made it to the original album. The same versions are also on there cd which came out later. But ALSO on the cd is the "Alternate Versions" of these two songs, which NEVER MADE IT, to the original album back in 1977 with different lyrics. Its just one of those things that bands do. The Go-Go's are no different, as we see here. Myself, I like to here other versions of these songs, so long as its done by the original artist, cos it makes me ask, Why didn't THIS version make it to the original album? lol

Well, I was in a band (not in the music business), and that's just the way it goes with songs (even, or especially with the Beatles, read the Playboy interviews with John Lennon). During rehearsals you change the lyrics for you're not satisfied. That might be because you write the lyrics preliminary, or because they start feeling not so good. Sometimes the songs becomes about something completely else. Once recording you put de facto the definitive version to tape. Sometimes the lyrics were already filed for copyright before recording and then the 'official' lyrics are different from the definitive ones on the record. I even have an official score of a big hit song they changed the melody and some words of between filing and recording. I'm not a native speaker of English but to me the lyrics on the record appear stronger than in this gig. I dare to suggest someone from the record company (strongly) proposed to improve on them (or maybe even a professional writer did some alterations). But maybe one of the Gogos will tell? Anyway, the lyrics can't be 'wrong', for this gig is way before the recording, it's a work in progress (notice also the guitar intro).

When I listen to the Textones version, I realize now that what changed before the Go-Go's recorded the song was mainly the chorus, which Charlotte really revved up. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same song.

@@rudolphguarnacci197 I read all kinds of books, including a lot of rock biographies. I'm not really into Sammy Hagar (or VH), either, but his book was excellent. I'm not a KISS fan but Paul Stanley's and Peter Criss's books were decent. Graham Nash's book was great as was Ann and Nancy Wilson's book. And any book about The Beatles is interesting. And, apparently ... YOU care. Have a good one.
