One month after this show was filmed, I met Kathy Valentine in the "Green" room after her set with The Textones who were opening for Gary Myrick. I was just 21 and I don't recall any mention of Kathy playing with the Go-Gos. I did a little impromptu interview and I asked what The Textones had coming up to which she replied: "We're playing in Arizona next month." And I asked her somewhat jokingly "So, what do you do with your first MILLION? She looked right at me and said "I'd like to have a new car. I've never had a new car before." In just a matter 2-3 months later I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought at the time that the signed Textones flier would be the last I ever saw of Ms. Valentine when-BOOM! The Go-Gos debut LP in the display case of our Mall record store.For years I showed off my Kathy Valentine autographed flier from the Textones show in September 1980 that she signed: "With Kathy, from love." Sadly, one day the flier couldn't be found. Talk about GRACIOUS! It was me and my friend roaming the Whiskey like we OWNED the place and we landed in the band "Green Room" due to its having an unguarded open door. We weren't even sure when the Textones set was ending so imagine our surprise when they wandered in from the stage. My friend and I had a demeanor that made everyone think that wherever we were-we were SUPPOSED to be there. Kathy and one of the guy members I don't remember which one were receptive to our presence and we stood around and "schmoozed" for awhile. I do remember that Carla O. was not in the room at the time. My friend bought a "Gary Myrick & The Figures"t-shirt. There were no Textones t-shirts that night. Now 40 years later I look back and I see this "Green Room" in my mind and think how I was talking to someone who neither one of us had any idea of what a heart-stopping ride she was about to get on. Now, either she had already joined the Go-Gos but thought it inappropriate to mention "another band" or her going over to them was not a done deal in late September 1980. The only other part of our conversation I can recall is when I mentioned that my friend and I live in NC and we're driving back in a few days and we're stopping to see my friend's sister in Austin, when Kathy's eyes got big and she says "Yeah, Austin! That's where I'm from! Carla, too!"

I'm writing a screenplay about the trip to LA that my friend and I went on, our mission was to pick up his sister's car at Long Beach Pier and drive it back to NC. Aside from meeting Kathy V. we had many incredible experiences not just in LA but on the drive back East via Las Vegas, Pueblo, CO, Amarillo, Lubbock, Austin (where his other sister lived), Dallas, where we happened upon "The Cars" in concert at Reunion Arena w/ The Motels. I don't want to put out any "spoilers" but I definitely plan on including meeting Kathy V. in the script, along with pedestrians along Santa Monica Blvd swarming cars in traffic in search of tickets for "MONTY PYTHON"-Hollywood Bowl. Hopefully coming to a theater near YOU!

@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
They weren’t just playing around the local L.A. club circuit at this time. Shortly after this was filmed they went on a brief tour of the UK with Madness, where they befriended many in the then-thriving 2-tone Ska scene, including the Specials… where Jane and the late, great Terry Hall started their brief romance, culminating in the song they wrote together, “Our Lips Are Sealed”.
@BillBird21112 ай бұрын
@@Shikta-poobah67 I thought this concert took place after they came back from the UK tour. Am I wrong? The way the girls described it in the documentary was that, as a band, they really were not that good yet. It took that UK tour, and the strain of playing night after night in UK pubs, that really improved the style. So, when they came back stateside, they were ready. But, perhaps I've just got the timing wrong.
@Shikta-poobah672 ай бұрын
@@BillBird2111 You could be right. I honestly don’t know if this (URGH!) footage is from before or after going to the UK. I just know this gig is from summer 1980, and Margot was fired towards the end of that same year. Kathy V’s first gig with them, if I’m not mistaken was New Year’s Eve ‘80. As I said in my other reply, I never saw the documentary so I’m not clear on all the fine details (like exact dates). During my time living in L.A. in the mid-late 80’s I befriended several people who were part of the early punk scene, and that’s where most of my info comes from. From what they all (unanimously) told me, the Go-Go’s started getting much tighter after Gina joined. She was a more seasoned musician and it put a big fire under their butts to step up their playing. Gina joined in ‘79. Going by the few pre-B&TB recordings I’ve heard, they got a *LOT* better around the time of this footage. It’s my personal favorite era, since they had gotten very tight but still had a bit of a punk edge, thanks to Margot.
@BillBird21112 ай бұрын
@@Shikta-poobah67 I am no expert either. But, in looking at the timeline at the Band's website, there is a notation from December 1, 1979. It reads that the band opened for Madness, a British ska band, in LA and were asked to tour with them. The next notation is that "We Got the Beat" was released as a single in the UK on July 27, 1980. They did record that song for Stiff Records during the band's time across the pond. I do remember that from the Showtime documentary. The next note on the timeline was the band performing at the Starwood in West Hollywood on October 31, 1980. The song depicted in Urgh! A Music War was shot at the Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles. Footage for this film, according to a Wikipedia entry, was shot in August-September 1980. The movie was released in 1982. Although I can't be sure, from what I"ve hunted down, I'm fairly certain the band performed the song after they came back from the UK. But, unless one of the band members comes here to confirm it, I can only assume.
@BillBird21112 ай бұрын
@@Shikta-poobah67 I urge to look at the Showtime documentary when you get a chance. The UK tour is covered in great detail. All of the band members speak of the importance of this tour and the toll it took on them. The experience was good for them, but at the same time, they admit it was not an easy time. They were touring with a Ska band, and the ska fans who showed up at these concerts really didn't know what to think about this collection of young women. The Go Go's were more punk than ska, and there is a difference. They were not well accepted at some of these concert dates. They indicate that they took plenty of abuse, and some of those concert venues could be a little scary. But, at the same time, they admit that it was part of a growth process that really served to cement them as a real band, and not just a collection of girls who played instruments. As a result, they came back to Los Angeles with a bit of a chip their collective shoulders. They were also brimming with confidence that followers of the band could see. That "attitude" that they speak of really does show up in the one song that made the cut in the film. They play that song like they know they are pretty good, and they don't take abuse from anyone. Period. If I owned a radio station and I had to choose a version to play on that station, this is the one I would choose.

I watch this and think of that horrible call Ginger had to make to tell Margot she was fired and out of the band. In Belinda's book she says Margot begged and pleaded not to be kicked out of the band. It's sad knowing how far she got with the band and she gets kicked out but if one band member is not on the same level and same path as the rest of the band, it can ruin it for everyone in the band. They had to make a tough decision. It brought in another great musician, Kathy and the rest was history. I hope Margot life turned out well for her. It was nice seeing her in the new documentary and how well she looks. She has aged very well. I thought she looked great in the documentary. Good for Margot!!! God Bless All the Go-Go's!!!

I dunno. I think they could have worked it out without having to fire her. They wouldn’t have been the first band to have members having “creative differences”. That kind of tension can be channeled into making great music. It has worked for a great many bands. I mean I’m glad that they finally settled their differences after 40+ years, but at the time it was pretty messed up. Margot was a founding member. To be fired from a band you helped start just as you’re on the cusp of massive success has got to be pretty damn traumatic.

Her name is Margot Olavarria. She was a founding member of the Go-Go’s and contributed a good deal of the early songwriting. She also gave them an edge that went noticeably missing after her departure.

They had a bit more punk edge to them when they had Margot Olavarria in the band. I don't dislike the more pop sound they had later, but I also like this earlier sound quite a bit.

The Go Go's right before the transformation (love Jane!). What a bill! Well the Surf Punks are lame. oingo Boingo have their moments. But the Alley Cats were great and severely underated!
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
The Surf Punks were just comedy. They were pretty dumb compared to the actual punk bands at the time, but they were entertaining in a cheap way. I always thought it was kind of amusing that one of them was the brother of the Captain from Captain & Tennille. However yeah, they didn’t really fit on this bill.

@Shikta-poobah672 ай бұрын
The crazy girl dancing onstage was their manager lol. The guy who reached into his pants and got chased off the stage was probably Belinda’s choice cut of the night. Those were _very_ different times, and the Go-Go’s weren’t exactly girl scouts in those days. That’s putting it mildly.

It's from the film Urgh: A Music War. There are a lot of other bands- the Police, Dead Kennedys, XTC, Gang of Four, Echo and th Bunnymen, Joan Jett etc- but this is the only Go-Gos song.

Yep. Margot Olivarria was the original bass player. She was bounced because she had problems making rehearsals and disagreed with the direction the band was going..from punk to pop.
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
@@wcatholic1 I think that’s a bit of an oversimplification. There was more to it than just a few missed rehearsals and some creative differences over the band’s direction. I think what a lot of it really boiled down to was that Ginger just really didn’t like Margot. There was a major power struggle between them. Much has been said over the years about how Margot supposedly wanted the Go-Go’s to remain a pure punk band and be more like X or whatever, but the truth is that she just wanted keep the punk edge, as they’re doing in this footage. She was embracing the more commercial sound just as much as the others, but she just couldn’t get along with Ginger.
@wcatholic1 Жыл бұрын
@@Shikta-poobah67 I wonder if Ginger did a "She goes or I go" routine.
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
@@wcatholic1 From what I understand (I wasn’t actually there, but I know a couple of people who were), that’s basically exactly what it was, or at least what it boiled down to. From what I’ve been told, Ginger had giant dollar signs in her eyes at the time, and was willing to do whatever it took and step on anybody’s face if it meant getting the big bucks… even if it meant chopping original band members out of the equation. Margot was collateral damage. It wasn’t that she didn’t want success, it was just that she didn’t want to have to sell her soul to get it. The others were a bit more, shall we say… compliant.
