The purpose of the weekend was to go make mistakes and get better at helmet mounted POV. I admit I am very new to the world of digital cinema. My buddy @Jason Cayabyab and I have been shooting a lot of skydiving. Up until this point, small DSLRs and GoPros have been the gold standard for mid free-fall images and videos. Skydivers would have to use impact rated neck braces to help prevent whiplash that occurs with larger cinema cameras when the parachute opens. Keep in mind slowing your freewill speed from 160+ MPH down to 30 MPH…
Apologies for the image shake - There is no Warp Stabilizer or image shake correction in post- my neck was serving as the only ‘onboard stabilization’ this situation had to offer. I also apologize for the dust on sensor - I was not traveling with a blower - complete noob move did not want to touch a brand new image sensor especially while crammed in a skydive airplane.
I was using the 24mm pancake which was set to F22.5 for exposure and focus not having the ability to tap into the BETA autofocus and not currently utilizing a ND. The ISO was set to 250 in the camera, but when using resolve, I was able to manually adjust ISO white balance exposure, etc.
After a couple jumps I switched to the heavier Canon 8-15 fisheye set between 13 and 15. This was noticeably heavier, but came with the benefit of not needing to be as accurate in sighting my subject at a wider focal length and thus, less noticeable image shake.
The camera is mounted on a flat lock skydiving plate which is a common form of attaching a 1/4 20 mount plate and adapter system to your standard range of skydive helmets. I personally use a Tonfly skydiving helmet because of the chin strap and quick release/emergency release (Yes this helmet has a rip cord that ejects and releases the helmet and camera system in an emergency situation)

I use a camera sighting mechanism called a ring sight to help with aiming the lens and estimating focal length. This pivots in front of my dominate eye while skydiving to serve as a visual indicator to know where my lens barrel is pointing.

This footage was taken at Skydive Oceanside in Southern California featuring my fly-dude Eric ‘Gonzo’ Gonzales. We have hundreds of jumps together and have been flying wingsuits for over 6 years. I thought this post was well appropriate seeing as though we have been flying inverse versions of our storm trooper SHRED wingsuits now with the Komodo.
My questions for you:
What lightweight/compact wide focal length cinema lens that’s autofocus enabled along with stabilization would you recommend?
What behind the lens ND filter would you recommend?
Are their smaller batteries than the Canon BP-955 that work with this system?
What other feedback/settings would you recommend to obtain a less-shaky image with more accurate focus?
Who is in need of a skydiver/wingsuiter for their upcoming projects?
