Wow! Thanks a lot for this. I have got fresh Theppal recently!! I dried it and procured the pepper. Now as i just got this osm recipe, its time i make a curry!
Nicely done - especially cutting the fish. Interesting addition of the peppers. In Bengal the fish is always lightly fried with salt and turmeric to reduce the ‘fishy’ smell. And onions and garlic are only added to reduce the smell if the fish is not that fresh.

Thank you Ma'am for teaching me how to make this tasty Goan mackerel curry. I cooked it just now for tomorrow's lunch , as I was told that any fish/ meat dishes tastes better the next day. It turned out good but I made a mistake on the qty of tamarind to be added .....so a wee bit more sour. I feel dried shark cooked in this tangy, gravy base would be equally good . I did not have the szechuan pepper at home . Must try to get it somehow. Next time. Also I skipped the Kokum rind as I feared that the curry might taste too sour. In North Malabar we use tamarind mostly. Thank you once again.
@FlorencyDias11 күн бұрын
Hello Sarah, thanks for sharing your experience with this fish curry recipe- it means a lot that you took time to write back after cooking it. It was good thinking to skip the Kokum since the tamarind had already done more than required🤗 Cooking is all about these moments of learning. I hope you keep teaching yourself newer techniques to not only cook, but to grow in every aspect of life ❤️ Thank you so much for your support and appreciation for my work. God bless you, Sarah🤗

What if i dont use tamrind and kokam on top of it instead of grinding it with masala along with triphal? Will that work?
@FlorencyDias21 күн бұрын
Hi Santosh, you can add tamarind to the paste but doing so will affect the colour of the curry. Also, Kokum is usually added whole (or tearing into halves) and it is the juice it releases as it boils that brings flavour. Grinding it into the paste would alter colour and flavour. Hope this answers your questions ✨Thanks for watching!

Tamarind and kokum both at a time? Usually both are not used together. Either fish shall be marrinated first or fry it to overcome bad odour.
@FlorencyDias9 ай бұрын
You can try this- it is the way most followed in Goan homes! Tamarind and Kokum add different kinds of tanginess, the former a sweet tang, and the latter a more sour tang. Quantities of both must certainly be considered when used together. But they both have their rightful place in the recipe :)
@maxiefernandes5536 Жыл бұрын
V in Goa also add onion. Either burger onion and fry masala before adding water or add smashed finely cut onion to the curry.
@lettyambrose412 Жыл бұрын
Yes,you can add onions by prior keeping on fire , cut onions,one green chilly,on cutting board sprinkle a little salt on cut onions(long ways cut) together lightly squeeze the cut onion, g.chilly ,salt and add the masala mixture and then keep on fire. Lovely aroma will spread the room,when it comes to boil.
