Goat Milk Shampoo Bar Tutorial

This video is about how to make a batch of goat milk shampoo bars, as well as the benefits of using different types of oils, how to reduce soda ash, how to use a soap calculator to calculate lye, and a few bloopers from the filming of this tutorial.
Learn how to make fresh cold process goat milk shampoo bars, any scent you like. These goat milk shampoo bars are gentle and conditioning on your hair. Some shampoos are harsh on the scalp or have gluten in them, so these bars are fantastic for those with itchy scalp or other skin sensitivities, including Celiac Disease. These shampoo bars are scented with Young Family Living Christmas Spirit Essential Oils. These shampoo bars contain saponified olive oil, which is a gentle cleanser, and saponified coconut oil, which is a stronger cleanser and provides a bubblier lather. There is also saponified sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, and shea butter, all which are great conditioning agents for your hair and scalp. There is also saponified castor oil, which helps keeps moisture in the hair. These shampoo bars are great for those with sensitive skin.
Ingredients are: Olive Oil, Goat Milk, coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, lye, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, and Young Family Living Lavender Essential Oils.
Supplies needed: mixing bowls, spatula, sauce pan, immersion blender, protective eyewear, protective gloves, long sleeve shirt, soap molds, drying rack, measuring scale.

I just made some today!!! I used jojoba oil, argon oil, sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, fun flower oil, olive oil pomace, caster oil, tallow (from a beef that I raised and I rendered the tallow) coconut oil, bees wax, goat milk (from my goats), lard rendered here and raised here, vitamin E, lye, activated charcoal, turmeric, and essential oils.

Never made soap using lye bc I buy the base for soap. But now I want to learn from 'scratch' on how to make shampoo bar and body soap. Question: is there a different measurement for lye between powder and liquid? I found liquid and for you recipe, would I use 7.5oz still? Silly question, but I'm not sure. Thx!

I have never used liquid lye, but I would say no, the measurements aren’t the same. The ounces measurement I use is weight, not fluid ounces. And I would assume liquid lye is made up if lye and water, which would alter both your lye content (reduce) and your water content (increase) so your soap might not saponify the way we hope. I recommend ordering the lye pellets online. And, lye is a very caustic substance, so no matter which type you use, use cautiously and wear proper PPE.

I love this recipe but I am having issues with the bar hardening enough to remove from the molds. Even after 1 week they are still soft and get stuck to the mold. What do you recommend for that issue?

Two recommendations: sometimes, when you first mix it, it can look like it has reached trace, but it hasn’t. If your soap reaches trace really quickly, then it is a false trace and you need to keep blending it. It will eventually soften again, and then reach a true trace in a minute or so. If it hasn’t reached a true trace. Then it isn’t blended enough to make the soap. Second recommendation: If you know that it has reached a true trace, and it is still sticking to the sides after days of being in the mold, then I recommend that you freeze the soap in the mold before popping them out if their molds.

Hello! So, lye by itself is NOT good for hair. This lye has been mixed with oils and saponifies the oils to become a soap. Lye is Sodium hydroxide and is very basic (has a high pH). This is why I used protective equipment while making this shampoo. But, after it has been mixed with the oils and they have ben saponified and the soap has cured for a month, you can use it.
