My take on this beautiful film is that she was so focused on the birds in the start that she missed the perfect shot of the bear right in front of her but later when she tries to take the shot of the bear, it has already left and she's only able to capture the snow. On the other hand the story hints at her losing connection with that guy, maybe she was so focused on other things in life that she ignored him and now that she wanna reach out for him he's just not there, he's like that empty tundra picture without the bear. The chance she missed. That's why they show that picture in front of his face in the last scene. Such depth.

I love the sort of symbolism of the warmth of the relationship, the sheets, the embrace, in contrast with how everything is cold now that she’s loosing the relationship, she touches the ice wall as if it were him, but it’s now only ice, offering nothing but coldness, just like him. She wakes up alone without the warmth of another, and when she searches for him/the bear, there nothing but snow, because there’s no relationship left, she gets lost looking for something that she can’t find because it’s already gone
@clairelafaille20953 жыл бұрын
Also at the start she was focused on the birds and not the bear, and the dialogue showed that she is very dedicated to her job, it might hint that while in the relationship she may not have been as present… So yeah that’s my take on it :p

I am not an art critic of any sort, however this animation gave me a perception of those sort of "short" flings, where you feel like you trust the person enough to share your intimacy, where once its done, the other part does not want anything to do with it after. In the empty space, especially in the end where she is lost, it almost feels like her feelings are interpreted as if she is alone, and even used perhaps, for something that she expected to be a relationship that just ended being nothing for the other person, you know.

Yes you're right, but I feel like her missing the opportunity to take picture was almost a metaphor to the fact that maybe she was focused on something so much (the birds being an example) so that she missed the opportunity to save her relationship (hence missing the perfect shot of the polar bear) She gets frustrated that's why she went the 2nd time to look for the bear. It's a metaphor to the fact that now she is finally paying attention and looking for the reason for their relationship to grow apart. She's searching for the polar bear, but she is also searching the reason for the distance growing in their relationship but along the way, she got "lost". Your interpretation was beautiful and I think you can play around with this beautiful masterpiece to come up with many analysis :)

Many people are commenting about how they believe the woman and man's relationship deteriorated due to the woman's focus on her work- but the scene at 2:04 stuck out to me. She reaches for his hand, just missing it as he reaches for his alcohol. The contrast of items on the table in this scene is striking as well, the woman's side has a National Geographic magazine, a paper of equations, a plate of half-eaten food, and an empty glass. On the other hand, the man's side of the table is rather empty, harboring only a pack of cigarettes and his bottle of beer.

Yeah, I totally agree, it seemed like the man was the one who was aloof; I think the polar bear was a metaphor for the man; he came out of no where and wasn't around when she wanted him, with the scene at the dinner table acting as symmetry for the scene where she looks for the polar bear.

I like this comment. I believe that there is no way it's the woman's fault for focusing on her work. It's obviously the guy's fault. Instead of understand and support her. Now women have the opportunities and then they just hit us with "oh you're losing your relationship because of your priority and focus?". What kind of BS is that?

He perhaps saw her as a fling and yet she fell for him. After she was found again and they were alone he didnt bother to ask how she was since he was mocked for it last time. Getting lost was her last attempt of putting herself in danger in order to get his attention but it didnt work. This is why covering his face with the picture implied that she has decided to move on.

I interpreted this as someone who was in a relationship with someone who was cold and distant, and only showed love/warmth during sex. She was ready to take a shower with him, but she stopped taking off her bra when he asked for the towel, ready to get out. She kept feeling for traces of warmth, in the footsteps, in the ice block, next to her when she woke up, but eventually the snow covered it and she's left lost in the cold. The last scene could mean that she doesn't see him as a warm loving person anymore, just a blank, cold entity.

She's remembering! She remembers the love, the warm, the connection with her lover in the past. The tundra represents the present, he is not there anymore, the love saddly isn't there anymore, although she seeks to return to that love with her partner who shows no interest, she's lost missing the warm love of the past and facing up its cold present, she at the end finally recognize it. Though different meanings can be drawn but this is my perspective what I feel is the photographer feels she is missing a normal life ,like she was supposed to be with her lover in that moment when she was lonely or when she was in danger in the cold mountains . Like this job of hers has put a barrier between her love life and happiness or something. Also I find some sort of metaphors something like the comparison of the cold mountains and breeze to her life , so as to how lonely she is and how much she need someone to find someone to find her (thus the signal was red in colour too) and give her that warmth or love she needs in her life ..

Such a beautiful piece of art; artstyle, composition, colors, and storytelling. Even when the character mostly obscured by heavy clothing, emotions were perfectly portrayed with gestures and mere eye movements. Superb job! The storytelling itself is also great; bounds of emotional distress and regrets explored with few words. The character had lost a connection despite it being right in her face, with her attention occupied by another, to the point she needed a jolt to bring her attention back to what matters. A symbol of her deteriorating relationship, where once it was the main target of her attention is now a vast expanse of isolation, a gap she cannot easily bridge. I loved the pieces added to represent stages of that relationship - where once their embrace brought warmth and security, now there is a boulder of a 'cold shoulder'; when they'd lounge together in bed sharing warm love, she now lies in the cold, his side abandoned. She tries to follow the steps, (re)capture what she had missed due to inattentiveness, but some things are hard to regain once lost. And that is what she is at the end... lost in isolation, cut off from what once was a loving relationship. Kudos!

Those of you comparing the man to the Polar bear need to remember that when the Polar Bear showed up, she didn’t scare it away because she was too focused on birds, she scared it away because she was scared of it getting too close. He was asking for too much too fast and she was not ready for/scared of a relationship and now that she’s ready for him, he is aloof because he didn’t get what he wanted from her immediately.

If you want a methaphor I would put it as...; The bear represents love or the love she had for her partner. It appears he's trying to put some distance between them, so I would guess there was a breakup they both had mentally come to terms with. But hearth/feelings just has to take a bit longer to get there. Its that transition the movie is about. Also, to speculate more then nessescary on some details. She allowed the "bear" to get to close. They are both colleagues right, living the same lifestyle of travelling to remote places as wild life documentarists. If they met through work that would mean they had very little expectation of how far their relationship would go. They have no control(especially if they were freelance) where they would go next, how far does a Tucan have to fly to get the artic. He said "Be careful next time.", before the shot is cut to a NatGeo issue about a rain forest. I think he's with a co-worker before, that's why he's being cold and distancing, for his and her sake. She needed to be numb to the love, and not let it get to close. The romantic picture of a Polar bear on the tundra has to be a vista of a frozen wasteland. A harsh price for one of the coolest gigs on the planet.

My interpretation is that this is an animation of missed opportunities. She had a chance to take a picture of the bear, a chance to be bold and show her feelings to the man but she was too afraid. When she felt like she was ready, the bear was gone, and even though the man is still right in front of her, she feels like it is too late.
@isabellburns9393 Жыл бұрын
I think that the bear resembles the exciting and thrilling part of her relationship that she is searching for but can’t seem to find. when she goes to find the bear, she’s searching for the thrill of fist meeting her partner, and the thrill she feels with him in only intimate contexts. but when she pursues it, all she sees is blank nothingness where the excitement in her relationship is nowhere to be found. she accepts fact that she is “lost”. the last scene when she puts up a photograph with no bear in it; with nothing in it, right over the man’s face, it symbolizes that their relationship is empty and void of the excitement it used to have. the idea of “emptiness” is shown throughout the short including the table after he doesn’t take her hand we see that contrasting her side of the table, there is little to nothing on his side, showing the emptiness and nothingness he has to offer her. truly beautiful and well-done short film.

In the happy days, I get funny videos of dogs and silly people. Currently going through some relationship issues and got recommended this video. And though I don’t speak, read or understand the French language, I clicked on this video almost immediately. If I had to connect what I’m going through rn with what this video symbolizes to me: _once you lose something, you’ll never find it again the same way you found it. She never caught the bear again, rather just traces. And though she tried, no matter how difficult the circumstances, or how lost she felt, she never found it again. But those circumstances reminded her of the good times and warmth she misses, so she kept trying and she’ll continue to._ I’ve lost all hope in this. I feel like I can’t call for help or have that light to signal my location. Its just me, in the cold wind, surrounded by an eternity of blank spaces knowing that the bear is still around and might eventually eat me.

I interpreted this as the bear being her big break… if she could shoot something other than the snow in the vast, arctic tundra, she would have completed her mission. On the other hand, her lover seems exhausted, stressed, and even numb. While she’s out in the snow again looking for her bear, she gets lost in the blanket of snow. The snow represents her lover. Cold, unforgiving and melancholic. Sure, she’s reminded of sweet times with him, but later on it hurts her more that her romanticized version of love is unreciprocated. In the process, being lost in love hinders her from completing her mission.

The most simple way to summarise this is the phrase “You’re walking on thin ice”. It’s a metaphor to describe how love and intimacy might feel like.

Bravo ! C'est très joli !

What’s the last thing people say right before they die of the cold? “I’m just gonna lay down for a minute” The Arctic cold is as harsh as a hot desert. Both terrains can leave people dehydrated…….and thirsting for connection, closeness, warmth, and even protection to the point at which these unmet needs combined with great physical stress, can both well up to produce hallucinatory effects. When we are at our weakest point, what we crave most and have the greatest need for, or what is most pressing in life can often present itself to us in dream like states of being.

True art) made u feel and interpret in your own way. For me this story about possibilities. Sometimes chances are missed. And we think that it was only one chance in life! and we strive to return it no matter the possible dangers. But instead you just need to let it go. some opportunities must be missed. And that's all. and what we previously considered precious will turn into a thousand identical pictures.

I think this is her yearning for a conection, relationship with him. I dont' think this is the aftermath of a break up of sorts. Is her desperately yearning for him but being refused at every little oportunitie. Ending alone. I can painfully relate.

Very grateful to the work done by this team. The animation is beautiful and what you recreate in it, the landscape, the characters, the story. Technically it is a very outstanding work but it is a story so well told, with so much sensitivity that more than explicitly narrate very subtly suggests the war of thoughts and feelings of the protagonist. Thank you team!!!

Love the visuals and the way the story is told. The narrative might seem a bit tricky in the way it plays out. In my head, the realisateur of this animation overlaped in a sumblime way the timeline of imaginary and the one of reality. While “hunting” for a polar bear, the girl realises that the relationship with her boyfriend came to a dead end. The bear is in her imagination and is the representations of her boyfriend in real life. The bear was never really there next to her as her boyfriend was never there next to her all along the road in their journey through life (and you get this feeling when she becomes aware of the fact that the bear footprints in the snow aren’t real, therefore the bear was in her imagination, and there’s a second shot at the end just before she sends her location and starts signalling it, where you get to see her legs in the snow leaving traces behind her… as I said before, she was “alone” even though she had a boyfriend). And you get the feeling that the bear is her boyfriend right from the start when she scares away the “bear” she looks through the camera and then the film cuts away to a tight close-up of her boyfriend smoking. I really love it! Well done to the whole team. You did a great job.

My take on this is a bit different than others I’ve seen. She has the encounter with the bear and is disappointed that she didn’t get the photo. We later see her try to find connection with the man who does not reciprocate. When she goes out to search for the bear, all she finds are bones and snow, nothing of substance. Eventually she has to call to say that she got lost. My interpretation of this is that she wanted the bear, aka she wanted the man’s love. However, when she encountered the bear, while it was a beautiful photo opportunity her life was threatened, she was in danger. But because of her ambition she yearned for the bear to return. Just as the man does not reciprocate yet she craved his love, it is seemingly a good opportunity but it’s not what’s right for her. The photo of nothing covers his face as to say that he is the nothing. Maybe to someone else he is something but to her he is the remains and bones that will not bring the satisfaction she so craves.

my take on this is that the story is actually written from the guy’s perspective, and he was in a relationship with the girl but as time went on gave her less attention and took her for granted (like when she wanted to hold his hand and he pulled away). so he didn’t notice that his girlfriend was getting a somewhat unhealthy addictive relationship with her work, and that lead to her feeling more alone and getting more addicted to her work. i think this is also because she couldn’t get the love of her boyfriend, so she tries to make up for that by atleast succeeding in getting the perfect picture. eventually she goes too far, gets lost, and maybe even dies. then the boyfriend realises how lousy he treated her, helps the police to try to find her but is only left with a lot of guilt.

Lovely short film.. I also had a interpretation to this..She looks for the polar bear which is a symbolic representation of her lover but she finds a dead carcass that could also mean the end of the relationship

Could the things on the table at 2:06 be a metaphor for the whole relationship? Pack of cigarettes and a beer on the guys side, maybe he’s very leaisurely and enjoying himself. Burnt cigarettes between them. That leisure is how they once bonded. Nat geo mag and writing on her side. And then food/ comfort behind that. The work is blocking her rest. She has more on her side than him and maybe she’s metaphorically fuller. Despite that she still feels “lost”. Idk🤷♂️

I think he's been with a co-worker before, that's why he's being cold and distancing, for his and her sake. She needed to be numb to the love, and not let it get to close. The romantic picture of a Polar bear on the tundra has to be a vista of a frozen wasteland. A harsh price for one of the coolest gigs on the planet.

To be fair they made her lose her shot. By interrupting they caused her to get lost as she tried to get another go. Notice how they do not see how important this is to her. Getting your photo in the NG is a huge accomplishment. The male seems to only care about drinking and can only assume he just wanted to use her as she developed feelings for her.
