Happy Halloween! A boatload of y’all sent me this or tagged in posts about it so it seems only fitting to try out the Goblin Sandwich from 1946’s “How To Run A Halloween Party.” That pamphlet was published by the helpful folks at The Donut Corporation of America. And it is an odd one, folks.

I think it is supposed to be using a specific old style donut from the 1930s that we don't have anymore. They weren't as sweet and could be either sweet or savory in a recipe. Their brand was "Tested Quality" bc they were stamped that way when packaged.

Perfect! Remember Halloween is also about pranks (“Trick” of Treat). Maybe a more appropriate sandwich name would have been “The April 1st Sandwich” or for a real stretch call it the 4/1/00. (“00” being a nod to the halved donut.)

This HAS To be a joke! I know that Brazil nuts were "that big one" in the Planter's mix that folks avoided. Avocados were "weird" to white folks. Worcestershire might have been the emblematic "weirdo" sauce that you might use in a blood mary but otherwise it stayed in the cupboard. The "deviled ham" also suggest "let's clear out the pantry of the stuff no one likes. Now, why on a doughnut? LIkely because that's just "wrong" right? The use of a doughnuts as a sandwich "bread" is an abomination that is still pretty novel now in these permissive times. I think this was a goof.

Love the collard sandwich, but… I think it might taste better on an actual old fashioned doughnut. That was not an old fashioned. Old fashioned are not glazed and that cracking is indicative of a sour cream based cake doughnut.

Appreciate the honesty. A bad recipe is a bad recipe. I watch a fair number of foodie videos, make the food according to the recipe, and, from time to time, trash it. But, most of the channels always praise the recipes, regardless of the quality. You're honest. And that's what we all need more of; honesty, not cheerleading, on these channels.
