Throughout human history, people in all cultures have sensed the divine and developed a bewildering arrays of beliefs and ideas. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli explore the conflict between belief in one God vs. many, the journey that God had led his people on through time, and how we should understand these concepts today.

Absolutely fascinating insight into angels and demons! Had heard the Church fathers thought of the pagan gods as demons. Also vaguely remember reading in the Bible about angels assigned to certain nations. But now it makes total sense how the Church fathers came to that conclusion from Scripture, with certain demons actually being attached to certain pagan nations (helping explain some of their heinous practices and God's wrath and judgment upon them). Thanks!

The Bible says twice that the gods of the pagans are demons. It says so in one of the Psalms, and then St. Paul quotes it.

I am so glad you pointed out the similar etymology between those various words, and the Arabic word Allah, it gets really annoying when Christians say that Muslims don't worship God, they worship Allah. Would they say that about Arabic-speaking Christians? It bothers me, because I've had the privilege of worshipping with Melkite Christians, IE, Byzantine Catholics from the Middle East. If someone wants to debate whether or not Muslims and Christians worship the same God, by all means do it, but it just really bothers me when Christians, especially ones that should know better, say stuff like that.

I think they worship a false image of God, meaning they believe in the God of Christianity but they received him in a distorted way. I think we should interpret this way that part of "Lumen Gentium" about Islam and Muslim, "we both worship the one Creator God..."

Actually, the Arabic for God isn't Allah, it's Ilah, like in the shahada, la ilaha illallah, there is no god but Allah, so I think they are well within their right to complain about that.

@I M Not correct. The “Al” of Allah makes “ilah” or “god” mean “THE God.” It serves similar to the capital G for God. Ilah vs Allah is the same as god vs. God.

Actually, it is the authentic Catholic faith that Muslims do not worship the true God. That entire religion is demon inspired. Unfortunately, Vatican II has taught a lot of heresy and essentially become an apostate church, the false church that has been prophesied from the beginning. Some of us maintain the true faith, though, so that Jesus finds some faith left on Earth when He comes back.

Usually when a singular is plural it seems there is a reason. For instance, "pants". There are two legs in one "pair" of pants. Or billiards. There are numerous billiard balls, etc. Many see Elohim as being indicative or being a hint of the 3 Persons in the One God.

@@MrMarcodarko How does this lead to such a thing? That God by nature does not have a physical body does not entail a plural. For instance, an angel also lacks a physical body but "angel" is a normal singular word. If you say this is because it denotes a function rather than nature, you can look also at "spirit," which likewise refers to the immaterial. Neither of these words seem plural in Hebrew.

Elohim (אלהים) gets just a little more interesting in Hebrew. If we start with El (אל) we can make that feminine by adding the ah or oh, to get Eloh (אלה.) Often Aramaic adds the same sound (as you mentioned) but usually with an aleph instead of a he. (אלא) So אלה could be goddess. Except that it gets stranger. To make a feminine noun plural, you replace the ah with ot. (אלות) which just about never shows up in the Hebrew Bible. It always gets the masculine plural ending added, to make Elohim. (אלהים) There was an Israeli scholar that I'm drawing a blank on the name for that that defined monotheism and polytheism in a unique way. He said that all theists (poly and mono) see a metadivine realm or substance from which absolute laws (what we might today call laws of physics and morality) came from. In polytheism, this metadivine is impersonal and inanimate. In monotheism the metadivine is personal and active and gets assigned as the top god.

I am Christian I have no judgement for anybody for I will be judged. Christianity is a way of life following Jesus teachings of how to follow God. I am a sinner and can be wrong. The word of God has been passed down in these texts for thousands of years. A lot of people would have you believe these are made up stories. Look at the word for yourself and you decide.
