Paradise Lost is legendary. Their album Obsidian was for me, the best album of 2020. It’s in the top three at the very least. They just have such a musical vibe that sticks with you.

PL is to me the same as DM or DCD in terms of musicianship or re-invention. I love them even Host included...I wish they lifted their ban from my part of France ;)

Some quick facts about the band: they’ve been around since the late 80’s. They’re responsible (with a couple other bands) for creating the death doom sub genre of metal. They’ve varied wildly over their career from super heavy to very electronic, but lyrically have been always dark. They are not religious at all. I didn’t think about how hard it would be to react to a doom band where the vibes/repetition are the most important and there’s not a lot of obvious flourishes. I was fortunate to see them open for nightwish. Def one of my favorite concerts ever

Interesting! They look too young to have started in the 80's. I guess they have aged well. I gotta check out some more of their catalog.

The song is actually CRITSIZING the unauthentic nature of religion and a poke in the eye to people who THINK that morality can be taught be religion, when it cannot be so. They are also saying that religion thinks those who and what they are called "godless" (Existentialists like me) have no morals............when its the reverse is accurate, as morals for example are born through trial and error through first hand experiences and not dictated by anyone questionable morals from a religion.

Take a look at very EARLY Devin Townsend in his band Strapping Young Lad, there’s an official video of their song “Love”, it’s pretty wild. Devin rocked a “Skullet” back in those days 😆 After “Love” for an added treat, watch his recent (2019) “Spirits Will Collide”, Devin has gone through some mental changes over the years, you’d never know it was the same guy, personality-wise, anyway

I don't think this song and the album with the song has a religious intent. It's more likely to be a concept of old times when every person around was religious. Doom metal won't ever teach you "not to kill", or anything like. It's just a beautiful artwork, you may understand it any way you like, but mostly sad and desperate way for sure.😎
