Game was Fischeresque. Carlsen gave up theoretical advantage w/2 bishops to put a bishop on c4.

This was a brutal day for Alireza, once he started Carlson just rolled over him like he was a 1500 player. Great to see the GOAT in good form, but feels bad for the person on the other side of the board.
@franckdebankАй бұрын
Did you see the matches? Can you assess grossly the positions in matches 1 up to 3? Have you made it over 1500 elo?
@DKarkarovАй бұрын
@@franckdebank Alireza playing at his top form does not drop 21 games to Magnus so he clearly was not in top form. He went on tilt and it happened fairly early. You don't need to be 1800 to see or state what was obvious. And yes I was watching the event live at least until Magnus had like a 9 point lead and it was obvious the match was over.

David Rudel covered this approach to the KID in one of his “Zukem” books. White, by playing his e-pawn to e3 rather than e4, stops black from playing …e5, as white simply takes the pawn. This means that black can’t play the main line …Nc6 and must instead play … Nbd7 to support …e5 next move. Then white like Carlsen trades pawns on e5 and then plays his e-pawn forward to e4! Even losing a tempo is worth it to get black into this uncomfortable line.
@alexbowring7489Ай бұрын
at @10:34, it looks to me like taking the rook with the bishop and then promoting next move is even more accurate then promoting immediately (both obviously win, but this line basically ends the game immediately)
@melrakanАй бұрын
Carlsen ended up winning by such a margin that I think he more or less ended up committing daylight robbery on Firouzja's ELO points.

Wonderful analysis, Daniel! Very instructive game! (And, as you point out, psychologically important too). Carlsen is godlike in finding the right transitions, always finding new powerful strategies. And: as you have often pointed out: playing good moves - not necessarily the best - continuously is in itself a great strategy!

I am a big fan of Alireza but he seems to have this mental block against Magnus that other youngsters don't have. Don't get me wrong. Magnus the absolute best but I never see an event with these two playing and think Alireza is going to beat Magnus. Losing to Magnus is expected but I expected a way closer match. Maybe a 4 point loss, not this much.
@IMChessMDАй бұрын
I think Magnus just understand Firouza more than he does other players and is able to exploit his weaknesses.
@LateCloserАй бұрын
I'm pretty sure Alireza has beaten Magnus before in a match setting. Believe it was a similar format, blitz online. A few years ago.
@GadgetifyАй бұрын
@@IMChessMD I think it is the style. Firouzja's games are very complicated with crazy tactics. Unfortunately, people like Magnus or Caruana are beasts in classical already and Magnus in all time formats, just doesn't stumble too many times in the types of positions Firouzja excels at. It's hard to say.

@@LateCloser Alireza has beaten Magnus in faster time controls before but let's be honest, their h2h is very one-sided. Probably more so than it should be considering how strong Alireza is.

Fast chess never was a thing in Kasparov or Fischer times. And it is more or less a different game. Magnus is undisputedly the best fast chess player ever. In classical chess (long-time controls), Kasparov's dominance is just unparalleled. Not even Magnus was able to dominate like he did.

If Norway win the Olympiad (lol) can we say that Magus has completed chess? In fact even if they medal I think we are at a point of saying that Magnus has won all that he would like to achieve and everything beyond is simply legacy building

Great recap, as always. What an unexpected end of this "hate hype", "next generation", "new format" etc. Four knockouts, Hikaru never got his gloves on, yesterday Hans, today Alireza. Such a great comfort that I wanted the outcome (I admit, relevant only to me). Magnus, Alireza, Ian (and others) fill my heart with love for chess. Hikaru and Hans singing mud... must be interesting if you find that to be a part of the game. That, I will never understand. Old and stupid, I suppose 👀

He did. The final score was less bad only because Carlsen lost interest and started playing silly openings in the final bullet games. Also Alireza beat Hikaru, to whom Hans lost badly too. Alireza would have stymied Hans as well, no chance.
