Some people have spiders as pets. For the rest of us, they move in unannounced, leave their crap everywhere, play hide and seek at inconvenient times, creeping us out and refuse to leave.

Land on your arm in the middle of the night, run around like they're the spider version of NASCAR (wolf spiders), hover right in front of your microphone on multiple occasions while you do a live show you can't stop, etc. I also live in a region with two dangerous spiders (black widow and brown recluse). We also have wolf spiders which are supposedly non-venomous but still aggressive.

I once went to a party at a colleagues house. I had to visit the bathroom. I opened the door to the sound of rustling. When I switched on the light, I nearly didn't need the bathroom any more...the room was filled with cages and tanks. It was like a scene from a horror movie. It's difficult to do what normally comes naturally when seemingly hundreds of little eyes are watching! Back down at the party, I told my friends. There were a lot of crossed legs and worried expressions for the rest of the party.

Yeah whenever I find a spider I just ignore it. You usually only see them when they're relocating to a new hiding spot, so they'll disappear before too long. My apartment building has a super high ceiling above the front doorway, and a pholcidae spider made a web way up at the top. Somehow, all the residents (4 apartments) collectively decided, without speaking to each other, that she lived there and no one bothered her for almost 2 years. Sadly, someone moved out and there must have been a complaint from a prospective tenant because the spider disappeared one day 😢

@@Jacqueline_Thijsenyeah I'm in ontario, and there aren't really any venomous spiders here either. Any spider you see in your house is always a safe one. There are black widows in some areas, but they are secretive and easily spooked, so you generally only see them outside in very rural areas with little human activity, and they really aren't dangerous. Black widows rarely bite, they prefer to run or hide when threatened, and when they do bite, it's rarely fatal. Although it makes you feel pretty awful so it's still good to avoid it.

I also love jumping spiders. I spent most of my life in a place with abundant wild jumping spiders, specifically of the zebra spider variety. It was really funny to me when the trend of keeping them as pets started 😂 I was like "you're buying these from breeders? And have little terrariums for them? I have like 5 free ranging in my house right now, they just moved in on their own." They're so cute though, I've always loved them, so I totally understand why people want them as pets.

I live in a converted bus on a friends bush block in Tassie (it's basically a really cosy RV that doesn't move by it's own power anymore, has all the "mod cons") Due to me liking to keep the door and vents open all the time if possible (except the middle of winter) I get lots of "Visitors". From huge huntsman (very docile, even friendly, their size is what makes you jump) through to black house spiders, occasional white tail, but no redbacks seen yet. I think the Huntsmen and black house spiders keep them under control, them and the large number of skinks that come in for a snack. The only visitor I don't let in is the Tiger snake... They're OK OUTSIDE, too old now to avoid a strike in close quarters. No need to kill any of them, except possibly the white tail, but a good shake down of clothes before you put them on, and bed linen before you get into bed will get rid of any hanging around. Lived here over a decade with all my "friends", never bitten.. startled yes... bitten no.

Living in an old house, you get used to spiders, especially in Autumn when they come in to avoid the cold. Thankfully, even the biggest are nowhere near tarantula size. I generally leave them alone so they can find a hiding place to stay until the Spring. Some of the large ones are quite cute.

Luckily, for all parties involved, the more venomous an animal is the less likely it will attack. Generally if an animal instantly ops for attack as its first response it’s because it doesn’t have any other defensive strategy and is hoping to scare you off. It’s why wolf spiders are so aggressive. They’re completely harmless but account for quite a few spider bites because of their aggression
