This is my presentation of a hymn that was written in 1876 by Daniel C. Roberts as our nation was celebrating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
At the time he wrote this hymn, Roberts was a priest in the protestant episcopal church serving as rector of St. Thomas and Grace episcopal churches in Brandon, Vermont.
It communicates both praise to God, who is the Creator and King of the universe, for His greatness and His majesty, as well as a feeling of patriotism and He can be your heavenly Father as well if you repent of your sins and put your complete trust in the finished work of His Son, Jesus Christ. That is, His perfect life, His death on that old rugged cross for the forgiveness of your sins and His physical resurrection from the dead for your justification.
Also, for your information, you might think that this is being sung by a choral ensemble, but it is actually yours truly doing all the harmonies and as you'll hear, I did the trumpet part with my mouth and you might even think that it was recorded in a big cathedral, but in reality, it was recorded in my apartment and I simply added the reverb.
(Lyrics)
1. God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
leads forth in beauty all the starry band
of shining worlds in splendor through the skies,
our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.
2. Thy love divine hath led us in the past.
In this free land, by Thee our lot is cast.
Be Thou our Ruler, guardian, guide and stay.
Thy Word, our law, Thy paths our chosen way.
3. From war's alarms, from deadly pestilence,
be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense.
Thy true religion in our hearts increase.
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.
4. Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way.
Lead us from night to never-ending day.
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
and glory, laud and praise be ever Thine!
