God of war 2 and 3 is where the franchise was at it's peak. Great story and fun yet challenging gameplay mechanics. GoW went from being a worthy rival of Bayonetta and DMC into a trash souls game wannabe. And don't even get me started how the story is fanfic tier trash. Kratos always had depth and these revisionists pretend he never did just to spread this agenda.

GOW3 was great but it just lacked epic bosses like Gow2. In my view GOW was at its peek at GOW2. After that The new GOW it started going down hill. But i do have to say that the PSP titles were fantastic as well. The new GOW games (Ragnarok and all that), i don't really see as GOW games. They are just using the name to cash in on its old fanbase while at the same time making a new one. Earns more dosh 💸💰.

Completely agreed. The game is no 10/10 and it's kind of jarring to see it being reviewed this way. Just feels like it's being rated highly because of the graphics, storyline and overall cinematic presentation. I was bored with the gameplay, combat in particular was exactly how it was described here. Clunky. I think the fact that I'd sunk hours into Shadow Of War (where the gameplay loop and combat was more to my liking) contributed a lot into me not enjoying the gameplay of this game. Talian from that game felt more like a god of war than Kratos, terrorising uruks with his wide range of violent abilities. That right there is my problem with this game getting 10/10s. Shadow Of War was a superior game in my eyes, and it got nowhere near the accolades this game got.

tried this game out during the height of the pandemic in 2020 and stopped around 15 hours in as well. Clunky, heavy combat, reused enemies and bosses, and a tacked on RPG system. it was just a chore to play, especially on high difficulties. in a game, gameplay is king. A gripping story helps to enhance the gameplay, but a gripping story is not enough to save bad gameplay. this game should've been a movie or miniseries. now that I write that actually, i think a miniseries of this game would've been awesome. anyway, great video!

I forced myself to try and beat this game, but I couldnt do it… i find it lame, cheesy, the kid is annoying shouts all the time, controls are not that responsive, puzzles are too repetitive and trying to make it kind of an open world game was really too much to handle for me. I prefer previous god of war games but this… I cant force myself to finish it

Games that lean heavily into being cinematic always get an abundance of undeserved praise. They’re the equivalent of Oscar-bait to the likes of BAFTA who encourage the blurred lines between games and traditional visual mediums for obvious reasons. Then there’s all the empty claims from journalists that games are “maturing” with every game that prioritises story over gameplay. In the same ways there’s nothing on Netflix that interests me, I want nothing from God of War, Naughty Dog or any these indie walking simulators. I prefer games.

Yeah exactly red dead redemption 2 is a great example the only. We things were graphics and animals and the map and story the gameplay was exactly the same as rdr1 which is really bad for how old that game is. After completing the story i had no interests to complete the John marston or whatever his name is. His story was pretty boring and i just went and turned on cheats and killed lots of poeple until I was bored I’m never playing it again I’m selling that game

I bought the game for the full price (I remember it's 49 USD) on Steam and I expected it to be at least good. However, I soon found the issues of the game: 1. Enemies are reused again and again. 2. The camera position is not good. 3. Not many skills and weapons to make the combat creative and interesting. 4. Not open-world. 5. Some puzzles are only annoying and annoying. 6. Cannot jump freely. 7. No introduction. I could not figure out why his wife is dead at the opening. The game should give some brief introduction; otherwise, this part should be removed. 8. Not enough NPCs to make the exploration interesting. For me, this game is just a 7/10 game. Game should be different from movie. The focus should be the game play part, not the movie part. However, if we just look at the movie part, the cinematic shows are also not the top. A lot of games currently have more shows than God of War.

People always compare Last of Us to God of War, but the thing is Last of Us was self-contained story. It worked well for that specific medium, but now every other game is trying to copy it. Where Last of Us was an original, now God of War is trying to copy it the same way and make it all serious. That’s what I hate the most. It’s like if you made GTA to only a car driving game. Last of Us characters were also way more fleshed out. The boy in GoW was absolutely terrible. Ellie actually had a realistic organic arc, where the boy would have cringe artificial moments of character change. Also can he please stop talking like an American teenager. This boy was raised by a Spartan warrior (the toughest of them all), and you’re telling me he’d turn out that disrespectful to his father constantly? Lmao I’m brown and I wouldn’t dare talk to my father like that, so it astounds me how much he does this in ancient times. The Freya arc made me wanted to hit myself. I despise when there are contrived plot twists. The one good thing is the vulnerability of Baldur, they actually caught me off guard with that. Graphics look great, but OFCOURSE it will look great when you don’t even have a jump button 😂 like people praise it so much. Excuse me, assassins creed game graphics are almost on par, difference is you can actually do so much on those games. This game sacrifices every gameplay mechanic just to make it little more shiny. I’m just glad some people can see through this game

I would give Atreus a bit of leeway on how he treats kratos as they are obviously estranged and despite being a Spartan he obviously does use the same techniques (the fact kratos doesn’t discipline his with violence or flogs him to toughen him up makes this obvious)

God of War is a 9 or 10 because it's a game catered to the lowest common denominator. Almost all aspects of consumer culture involve objects which become popular not for their quality or depth but rather that indefinable mediocrity which allows for mass appeal. Anything pushing up the intelligence requirements about one standard deviation above average ends up having difficulties being profitable. Seeing through the illusion is both a gift and a curse. This video helped quell the idea of wasting time with this game, so I will be uninstalling without even starting. Thanks!

It's a series of small rooms connected by corridors, with small scale skirmishes against damage sponge enemies. The platforming is also non-existent (there's no risk). Is it an okay game? Yes. Is it the best? No. Is it anywhere near as good as God of War 3? Absolute not. That game has far better scope, artstyle, music, combos, enemy and location variety (better puzzles as well). The combat is just way too limited in the 2018 reboot and repetitive. Playing on the second hardest difficulty was a complete chore, i.e. enemies just soak up the damage and flank Kratos again, again and again. This is not fun. I'm not surprised critics thought it was the best thing ever (they play on easy and care more for Hollywood presentation), but as a veteran of the series dating back to 2005? I didn't enjoy it at all. Then there's the redundant busywork where the collection stuff for the tacked-on rpg mechanics becomes a form of in game kleptomania. I honestly feel it's a game carried by rampant fanboyism tbh, i.e. Sony fanboys in particular can be very militant about their console exclusives. It's getting worse as well (just look at the hype surrounding sequel).

Completely agreed with almost everything you mentioned in this video. I was hyped when the game came out. Played and tried to get all 100% complete and beat the game. Once I beat the game I sold it right away. The combat is too slow. The rpg aspect was useless. I never felt the need to switch to any new armors or weapons after I’ve been invested in a set that I’ve already upgraded because their stats felt unbalance. And 100% agree on characters personality. They’re all modernized and sooo American (in an annoying and political way). I guess those mocap artists were just being themselves and say their lines. Overall your video is great and very honest! I’m glad I’m not the only one who think this game was and is way overrated.

Hey Vince. What I think's happening there is that Sony catered to a much broader audience. Hence the dumbing down on combat and more emphasis on a grandiose story with really great graphics. The original target audience wasn't in mind as much with this one and Ragnarok, and that's a major factor why the games get such high ratings.

I thing God of War 3 looks the best and probably plays the best. But imo i think the best was GoW 2. It had the best bosses, the best story, and was hardest to platinum than the others. But i do agree, the new Gow games are not better than GoW3. I don't think they are trash, i just don't think they are GoW games, and i don't think that they are better than the older games.

The combat was the main reason why I haven't played Norse GoW nearly as much as Greek GoW. GoWIII, in particular, has fast combat while also making the strong attacks feel heavy. Holding L1 and pressing triangle with the Blades of Chaos is such a satisfying attack! So is the shoulder ram that sends enemies flipping and I miss the attacks you can do grunts by pressing circle (especially using one of them as a battering ram). Norse GoW limits your field of vision so they make less but stronger enemies that make Kratos feel like more a regular man than the god of war.

Good to see people who have good sense. God of War has been one of my favorite franchises ever since the first one on the PS2, played all of them many times over. Now we have to stomach not only the praise that these newcomers give for this garbage, boring reboot, but also the insults to the old games: "they had shit story, Kratos is a shallow character". Those games were absolutely epic, there will never be games like that ever again, now we're stuck forever with these pretentious moviegames. If you thought this game was overrated, don't even try Ragnarok, one of the worst games I have ever played. Complete regret.

The big issue is that the gameplay feels meaningless. In the previous games, the linearity actually served to keep the momentum and challenge of the games going with varied interesting puzzles and combat encounters. In this game, however, every "puzzle" is the exact same no matter where you are in the game. The combat encounters never get creative or challenging as you face the same enemies within similar arenas while you increasingly get too powerful for the enemies to catch up.

your review is fair , i felt the same , hardly played to the end if i want to give the only redemable feature of it , it is possibly boss fights (yes yes most of them are Copies of each other , so it is not even really a great point) but despite all flaws , it felt like i actually was doing something ,beating valkyrie queen was hard and challenging (despite it was a copy of already beaten valkyries , but stronger and have all of their movesets) so yeah, the only feature of this game that i appreciate is boss fights, after all , this is a souls game copy cat to begin with , boss fights somehow allows you to enjoy combat

Started it 3times... never finished it. Graphic, Sound, Storytelling, everything is great. But the Fighting System ist so boring... Especially on higher difficult. There is no flow in it. I don't know how to describe it better. Hogwarts Legacy was the complete other side. Awesome fighting system but the world was boring like hell. I am also about 10-15 hours in and would give it a 7 AT MOST. Combat is BORING, the camera is atrociously bad, the story is as basic as you can get. I am going to try to force myself to run through the rest of it but so far it has not been a lot of fun.

I don't know if I'm missing something but I just couldn't get into it. Too much fucking around in cinematics and tomb raider type puzzle bullshit. Yeah, Once I finished after a very underwhelming last boss, I realized I wasn't going to kill all Valkyries as I planned first cause I just didn't feel like it, it was enough of playing that game. Late to the party,but I just thought I'd share my thoughts on this game. One of my friends used to always try to encourage me to try out Gow 2018. He is a die-hard gow fan. I tried it myself and I gotta say,it's boring as hell. Atrociously heavy and clunky combat,little enemy variety,bland level design and puzzles. And if Kratos has gotten "wiser" then why tf did he break the gate leading to Jotunheim by ramming Baldur into it? For a so-called "God of War" it doesn't even feel like you're playing as one a single bit. The boss fights with Baldur are incredibly disappointing as well. Plus any other boss fight for that matter. I've played Chains of Olympus before and even a goddamn psp game has better combat then this so called critically-acclaimed "masterpiece". I've been hearing people blabbering about the game non-stop and how good it is,but I just can't get into it. I waited to see if the Baldur boss fight was going to be better but it was just as bland as the rest. At that point I just gave up. It baffles me how a game this flawed can receive such impeccable praise. Kratos is a good character in my opinion,but this game doesn't do anything well to represent him as the "God of War".

I'm able to turn a blind eye to many things, but that over-the-shoulder camera like in a third-person shooter is an insurmountable barrier for me. Instead of Christmas tree lights on the screen, the camera could simply be zoomed out during combat like in Devil May Cry. Why do I have to stare at Cratos' back all the time?

I just finished god of war ragnarok and that one is more of the same. I love the OG god of war games but these ones hold your hand and basically baby you through the whole game expect in the combat where you basically just get destroyed by everything. The story is what everyone raves about but it’s not that great, the combat is boring, bosses reused every boss fight feels too similar in combat. If they didn’t have the God of war title they’d be average.

Another thing I want to note here. We shouldn't trust journalism ratings and also Game of The Year reward or something like that. Rating games using similar criteria is unfair to many games because their types are different. Big game companies can sponsor these agents by advertisement fees so games by these big companies are more likely to be rated higher than games by small companies.

1. Too slow pacing, the track back is hideous sometimes, especially that evolve climbing mechanic. 2. Kratos is feel so weak, yes the animation looks impactful but it doesn't feel the attack damage the enemy enough, even some enemies are not disturbed by your attack at all. 3. The weapon and armor menu is a mess, so confusing, every piece of armor have their own enchantment, your axe has enchantment, your armor's enchantment has enchantment. And level up based on what level armor you wear is not satisfying. And every single of those aspect is upgradeable make it even more complicated.

In the old GoW games, you felt like a total badass, especially when you pull off sweet combos against your enemies. I actually replayed God of War 2 on PS3 and I pulled off a 300 hit combo. I literally had the moment of: "You guys haven't trapped me, you are trapped in here with me." It was a massacare, but it was very satisfying. The new GoW games on new gen consoles just doesn't have that feeling of badassness of the original Trilogy. It feels more watered down then anything else.

I liked the game personally and yes I do agree the combat is slow yes it's hard to get though but... Then I quit for a while after alfhiem and came back last month and I started to see that the combat can be fast with right gear (Gear is a bad idea and a bit.. tedious to get especially in a gow game) but after getting the blades it happened I started to like it and I fell in love the Valkyries were hard yet still made me think faster than I did in gow 3 which was surprising to me I even did 100% of the content yet... It still was not perfect the same enemy's over and over again still getting bored in fights yet it still gets a 8/10 for me story was... 9/10 Combat was 6/10 could be better and that's it for me.

I really don't like the term "Overrated" as I feel like that disregards those who do like a game, but for me this game is so freaking boring and video gamey if that makes sense. It's systems are tedious to me and just not interesting at all. I hate the chests and being arbitrarily locked out of things and expected to come back later to get them. Too many collectathon elements in general that are just distracting. The combat is clunky and boring. The bosses are bland and uninteresting. When they try and add unique mechanics to the bosses the end up being more annoying than anything. Like when you fight Thor's kids and every time you get them down so far in health you stand in the middle and rotate around like a turret and just block. Like wtf was that, that was so dumb. And honestly for me who loves story and character in games, I just feel nothing for this story. As much as I love Christopher Judge, Kratos is obnoxious with his gumbly angry disinterest in everything. And speaking as a father to a boy of similar age as whatever the boys name is, the kid has an annoying voice and just talks too damn much rarely saying anything interesting. I'm about half way through and I just don't think I can bring myself to complete the game. I'm just forcing myself to play at this point and don't know why. So I think I'm done

I understand where you're coming from with the term, "overrated". But it is. When publishers (most notably the more recognised and influential) make a point at how intuitive, exciting, and enjoyable the combat is, for example, and when there have been countless games that came before it in the same field that pulled of its similar combat far better, adding to the fact that this game was made for the masses, rather than its previous, already existing audience, to which the majority are casual gamers who've not played many games before... well, that's why we use the word, "overrated" 🤷‍♂️ Sometimes, it's best to go with how one genuinely feels, rather than considering what the opposition thinks. I did not feel the game was linear enough like the previous ones in the series. For me, it was almost too open ended that it was overly easy to get lost and waste so much time. I also felt too many of the bosses were redundant and repetitive - the giant trolls come to mind in the first part. It got boring and felt like overkill to just keep fighting the same monster (the only change was the color and element the troll was inspired by). I also felt like the games inspired by Greek mythology had so much more enemy variety than the Norse mythology God of War.

For me this game is a solid 9/10. It wasnt always this way though. In my first playthorugh I took a break from the game because such as yourself, i wasnt too versed into its rpg elements. But when I came back to it, and gave it another try I learned more on the combat and gear system. Playing on new game plus is where this game really shined for me. The combat felt really smooth and flowy, It was fun exploring the world and getting upgrades to become more powerful, with cool gameplay styles. All of the sudden grinding for better gear was unbelievably fun, while taking down the valkries. The story on the second playthrough made more sense and was a lot more engaging. I was never too much into soul like games, but gow was sure a nice introduction to them. To me I just really like the weapons and combat abibilites in this game, along with the smooth animations. Which a lot of games these days lack. Again the story is also amazing because of how well each character is written and how they fit thematically in the story.

Although to be fair, gow 2018 was my first gow so I didn't know much of the context in the story, it's probably why I wasn't too into jt at first. For raganarok, I also think its great but this time I enjoyed it a lot through my first playthrough. I was more familiar with the story, along with the rpg elements of it. The combat was really extended so that was nice. The game was longer, and the valhalla dlc added more replay ability. Although I still prefer gow 2018 story, it was more focused.

I played this on PC. The only thing I enjoyed about this game were the visuals. It's an absolutely beautiful game, especially at 4K with RTX and DLSS. After all the reviews I saw about this game, I was not expecting such a slow-paced walking simulator. The fights were too infrequent, boring, and repetitive when they did happen. The puzzles were insanely easy. Atreus should have died with his mother, i would have rather seen Kratos walking with Freyja instead of little brat boy. The story was dull and predictable. The only "twist" was being on the wrong mountain. If this were just a movie, I would have probably liked it. I liked that they did everything in one camera shot. But as a game, there was nothing to do but look at how pretty it was.

For me, 7/10 was the sequel, I understand that it's a solid game for the most part, but I was severely disappointed. This one though, it's like a 9.5/10 for me, it felt like a Zelda version of God of War, obviously the music, visuals, acting etc were stellar, but I also personally REALLY liked the combat system, the puzzles were mostly serviceable, the characters were also very good, decent character growth all around. My only complaint is the pacing towards the second half; the story drags at that part, it could've ended earlier. Also, I like the side-content in the game too, I platinumed it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Playing in the highest difficulty was the most fun playthrough imo.

If anything I had wished Kratos was this well rounded then, but okay the GOW was going for a one-dimensional archetype and in tone with the fast-paced, straightforward dark adventure ahead. The new ones doesn't lessen the brutality that I must say I really love in the original installments, though I say this with assumptions because I haven't seen the entirety of 2018 GOW. I get why you stopped playing this because it just wasn't a preference and some of the critical things about its gameplay you are honest about, just decided that there are some negatives that weighed it down for you. And that's constructive criticism. As for me, I'm not picking up the games simply because I now have waaaay different preferences than when I played the original GOW, though if there's one nitpick I want that should've been retained was um....more blood lol 😂 just deep lore, well-rounded characters, bloodshed lol I'm a little hopeful for the upcoming release, the devs did say and are promising to make things faster and responsive with the mechanics, as well as bigger bosses and a deeper lore with the 9 Realms. Ok but lastly, I do wonder (though it may have been explained in the game but I don't have it so....) how and why is Kratos in a Nordic Mythology and land, when he's Greek? There's no doubt people migrated all the time during those ancient times but, I feel it's a missed opportunity to explore the downfall and carnage of the ancient eras of Greece. There's so much to be told there and.... I don't know, there should've been a more better reason to connect 2 very different mythologies, especially since their miles and miles apart. The 9 Realms would not welcome Nyx or god forbid Zeus' ghost wanting revenge against Kratos (if that's not already in the game's lore)

After having a long time away from the game, I think I wouldn’t enjoy a replay all that much. I 100% complete this game, even on NG+ GMGOW, I’ve done it all, and my Kratos was a level 9 nearly 10. If Kratos wasn’t in this game, it would be half as noteworthy or memorable. It stands on the corpse of who Kratos was all along, and wants nothing to do with the last 6 games. I’ll still be playing the OG Trilogy.

The gameplay is not that fun; the enemies force you to spam the same melee attacks over and over again, the enemy variety is really low, the camera system and position is not as good as Dark Souls, the kid's bow isn't that useful, the puzzles aren't all that stimulating, and like most other playstation 3rd person action adventure games there are these irritating sequences where you just walk in a straight line listening to dialog for extended periods of time, and sometimes that can enhance your immersion in a lot of games, but its just boring in God of War. I remember hearing people say this game was better than Red Dead Redemption 2 back in 2018. How anyone could be so delusional to think it is anywhere near the caliber of game that Red Dead 2 was, I will never know. I think people grossly overrate a lot of these Playstation exclusive games.

@@jaysony8587 not story I’m just bad at articulating it The gameplay decisions are what are flawed the camera that’s permanent stuck to his neck, the one cut idea that the fucked with with the over reliance of menuing, the broken RPG system that lets you break the difficulty in half, the over reliance on the runic attacks due to a cool-down timer rather than the old mana system, an over reliance on “realism that lead to most enemies just being dudes, a combat system specifically designed to stop older players from transferring old knowledge (no serious when the play testers sent back the footage Corey thought it was too much like the old games combat and changed it) I also fundamentally disagree with the idea that gameplay should take a backseat to story and this game obviously does so
