The only time he really died was in GoW 1. He had already become immortal by GoW with the power of Thanatos and being a half-god. That's why he has the hole of the Blade, and not the hole of the giant pillar Ares threw at him.

Maybe Kratos thought that Athena was the one that did it OR since she's with the gods, which is why he said "Athena, you conspire against me!?" that she may have told Zeus that Kratos "betrayed" and/or went against the gods wishes the gods which maybe would have made Zeus go down there himself and collect the sword of Olympus.

I never understood how kratos’ death works in this. He keeps coming back, maintains all his godly powers even in death and is basically just moving place to place while remaining unchanged. I suppose my question is why the gods and others can’t transition between life and death like he can Then again, the ghost of Athena is another point. The ghost of a god? And why aren’t the other gods interacting with the world like she is? And do the other dead gods still exist? Or did kratos killing them destroy them completely? Her existence brings a lot of questions

I've never had a PS2/PS3/PSP so I missed out on all the God of War games. This video is all I needed. I don't need to play those games since God of War 2018 is such a departure from the 6 other games, Just needed to know the TL;DR. Now there is the problem that I do not currently own a PS4/PS4 pro, because I'm a PC/Switch owner and I felt that gave me access to enough games. Heh, I'll probably just keep watching Jesse and Girard's LP.
