Gods of Egypt looks God awful. This movie looks like a wreck between Clash of the Titans, 300, and Exodus: Gods and Kings. I'm sorry but I was like both Koreys were. From the trailer, I could tell this was not going to be a decent film. And the historically inaccurate "white-washing" that some of these movies seem to have and be given a lot of hate for even though they take place in Africa did not help things either. Honestly, it is extremely unfortunate sometimes as to who gets money and funding to produce utter garbage. I know this is may sound harsh, but I hope they don't get anywhere near their money back in profits so that they can learn from this mistake.

What is up with this weird trend of modifying mythologies to the point that they're not even recognizable to their original mythos? I could understand a few stinkers, but almost _every_ god/demigod piece of media out there sucks. The only times I can think of modified mythologies being used well would probably be Disney's Hercules and... I dunno, Yu-Gi-Oh and Percy Jackson? Almost nothing beyond that.
@cielopachirisu9298 жыл бұрын
***** Maybe. I remember thinking it was one of the weaker Marvel hero movies, but fair enough.

+Cielo Pachirisu Rick Riordan's books worked because they stuck VERY close to the source mythology, and Rick Riordan actually STUDIED mythology before writing his books.
@cielopachirisu9298 жыл бұрын
***** The Prince of Egypt? That was actually a Dreamworks production, and that didn't portray gods outside of their mythologies/religions. In fact, that in and of itself was a religious story, so, it's not exactly a modification of anything.
@cielopachirisu9298 жыл бұрын
Kiljaz Ink Honestly, you don't even need to study them to make a good story about them, you just need to portray them in a way that is palatable and recognizably close to the source without absolutely destroying nor completely emulating it. I'm incredulous about this whole trend because it seems _nobody_ in Hollywood seems to understand that their way of doing this doesn't work.

I am not PC at all, and I can't stand the hyper-sensitivity surrounding identity politics nowadays. HOWEVER; making a movie about Egyptian lore without any Egyptian people in it is absurd. It would be like making a movie about Norse mythology and casting all black people as the Gods and vikings. What a complete insult to anyone who is interested in Egyptian culture and mythology.
@Freeri08 жыл бұрын
+HumanoidCableDreads Ancient Egypt was primarily Nubian, so to cast African/MiddleEastern people would be alot more appropriate. Casting a good actor like Gerald Buttler is completely acceptable(we are talking about making a good movie not a documentary). Even still, to cast almost no people of color at all is a complete slap in the face to Egyptian Culture.

I just saw Gods of Egypt and before I even watch this review I just want to say that I thought it was fun! I loved it. It's clearly SUPPOSED to be a simple, fun, DnD adventure and it nails that swarm charm perfectly. I suspect people walked into this film with the wrong expectations and if so, it was a failure of the marketers to set the tone for what's needed to enjoy this film. But beyond that, it is very clear to me that the director, actors, and scriptwriters had FUN making this film in hopes that audiences would have FUN watching it. If you walk into this film expecting it to make you seriously contemplate your existence or something, then you've err'd in watching it this way. If someone tells me Citizen Kane is a lighthearted comedy and I walk out hating it, it does not mean the movie sucked, it means my mood was in the wrong place. If you're capable of enjoying Indiana Jones, you are capable of enjoying this movie. It's not SUPPOSED to feel like Lord of the Rings or 300. It's SUPPOSED to be precisely what it is: Adventure Time! ;-D With all that said I will now watch this review.

All the strange people here that can read idiotic comics (and watch their movie counterparts) as bibles but have to talk down a mytical egypt movie for not being accurate.. go figure ;) ..as for "white casting" another BLA you hear on this movie. Hell yeah that it is white casted, but so are pretty much ALL movies from Hollywood, so you either grow a backbone and block them all.. or perhaps...stfu? :D This is not an original deep plot accurate movie. This is an action mytical fantasy movie.. everybody that couldnt enjoy it for what it is should have a deep look at their critical reasoning and where they focus it.. there surely are much better focus points in life to apply those abilities and make a difference ;)

Would the movie be better with brown people in it? Egypt has been conquered and occupied so many times that we don't know what they looked like. Drawings on walls show white, red, brown and black rulers, the same for workers and slaves. As for accents, should they speak in ancient Egyptian, problem being we don't know the language they spoke. Movie sucked, but not because of political incorrectness.

Nicolas Padron Horus is the god with falcon head. Ra is The Sun, literally, The Sun. I haven't watched the movie either but I saw some pictures. Egyptian gods have many forms. they have full human form , and human with animal head form, and full animal form. but few of them don't have animal form like Osiris, Isis and Ra.

Angry joe, really respect your opinion. Love all your reviews, games and movies alike. but I think this film deserves a second look. I loved it. It is campy, over the top and ridiculous but I think that was the intention. Nowadays, too many films take themselves too seriously and you can accuse this film of many things but it definitely doesn't take itself seriously. c'mon gods and mortals living together. of course it's bullcrap. But such refreshing bullcrap.

Looking the movie without super shitstorm in the back, its a fine movie, its just as much a "adventure" as Prince of Persia or John Carter, which are also just some adventure movie. Its clearly a world of its own, its not realistic in any way, but i liked the introduction of Ra fighting the gigantic monster each night and the world of the dead with Anubis was totally fine. The classic random thief and his girlfriend are just like jar jar binks, they are overall unncessary for the movie, but they are still included. The idea that set changes the rules of the afterlife was decent, people turn into money horders and the poor are cast into the abyss, decent story, it showed how the world turned to shit and Ra, just like any high God simply doesnt give a shit as he has more important demons to fight. Some funny moments with the gods, some nice phrases of text, and landscape looked decent. Transforming gods was just as pathetic as any transformers movie, give or take, the same crap, but its enjoyable enough. Any talk about racismn or anything is completly over the top bullshit and if critic is based around that its just a joke. If someone does a movie they can cast whatever people they like, its a fantasy world after all, its not a history class. The movie isnt great, but its decent for what it is, a adventure movie. Its easily a 6/10 kind of movie, as thats all the movie delivers.

+ThisNameIsBanned One thing that a lot of people don't get is that the movie is actually fairly faithful to the source material. Sure, they made a few changes, mostly trimming the absolutely bizarre sexual stuff that modern audiences would find repulsive, but it was clear that the writers had done their research and put a lot of effort into incorporating actual elements of the mythos. It was certainly more true to its mythos than any of the greek or norse mythology movies I've seen.
