I actually kinda liked the way Godzilla walked on land. It gave him an unsettling, almost alien feeling. Plus, it felt consistent with classic Godzilla movies where he was often played by a guy in a suit, and that’s the way he would walk then.

SPOILERS Can we just talk about those scenes when we see Godzilla stomping on people? That was done so well. People weren't in danger when he was about to step on them. They were in danger when he stepped near them. I genuinely think this movie did a lot of things better than some of the OG movies.

I left the theater thinking 2 things: 1. Godzilla is an absolute force of nature. No characterization; just a BEAST. While made it all the more terrifying. I was here for it all! 2. I ACTUALLY gave a shit about the human characters! That never happened in the Legendary Monsterverse Godzilla movies [except for Ken Watanabe]. WOW

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU. I really enjoy villains who have a backstory as to why they’re the way that they are, HOWEVER it is really nice to see an antagonist who’s *just evil.* He’s not tragic or broken. He is a monster. I also felt that having *actual* human stories that related to both Godzilla and other trauma made him more terrifying. It was nice to see (compared to the other Godzilla movies) the humans play a bigger role than just props to make him seem scarier.

With the whole dub vs. sub argument, it depends on the anime. Many dubs are subpar (at best) while a few others are really good. EDIT: Some of the dubs I like is because I grew up with those versions. As an adult, I like more subbed anime than dubbed.

I just have a nostalgic soft spot for dubs because that’s how i got introduced to anime. I was a toonami/ adult swim kid. Any anime ive been introduced to outside of that especially since streaming became a thing i naturally watch it the original way.

I feel like if they only just used the original roars, like what Shin Godzilla did, then people would just criticize Toho of being uncreative and solely just relying on the classics in order to be good so that could be the reason why they changed up the roar a little bit. Just a possibility I thought off but honestly, you can't please everyone. I haven't watched the film yet but I'm definitely excited for it. Happy to see a vengeful, angry Godzilla again who actually has some character. Great work as always, BM!

Takashi Yamazaki director of Godzilla Minus One is a fan of the 2001 film Godzilla King Ghidorah, Mothra Giant Monsters All out attack. Since 2001 GMK Godzilla is one of the most Evil versions of Godzilla it's no surprise Takashi Yamazaki took inspiration from GMK for Minus One Godzilla.

I see my local theater starts showing this movie this week. Definitely will stop by to check it out when heading home from work. GODZILLA been one of my heroes since first him as a little kid way back in those ancient days of 1960-1970s. Something about Godzilla stomping on all those little humans and ending their screams is soothing to the ears.

Godzilla works the best when he actually represents something. From the horrors of atomic weapons (original), the Fukushima disaster (Shin), or the horrors and trauma of surviving/rebuilding after a major war. This is top 3 in the franchise, no question. Everything from the human cast, Godzilla's design, the destruction (the atomic breath is the most devastating yet), the plan to kill him, everything. Wish there were more showings where I am :(. To nitpick, his roar is definitely a redo original 54 roar (the other variations, not the one shown in the video). As for the way he moves, while a bit janky at times, reminded me of his rubber suit days. With that, I do consider this a spiritual remake of 54.

The funny thing for me is that I am a primarily DUB watcher of anime. Yes, DUBBED (sue me) and I am STILL going to see this movie Saturday. Got my tickets and everything. This is one of the very few cases where the fact that there's no dub (yet?) doesn't bother me. This and the OG Godzilla film. I said YET earlier because I THINK there was supposed to be a dubbed version available in theaters but I don't think it was able to be finished in time. At least that's what I've heard. If we get a dub with eh eventual home release, then the option is there at least.

I think the walk looks goofy because Godzilla is an absolute unit. Like it's not supposed to be jiggly because of the regeneration of it's cells creating the crazy strong outer shell.

The roar isn't iconic esk but it it's own thing with a twang at the end. I like that. It's like it's his own voice or accent. The walking was robotic especially vs when Godzilla decides to attack. That though, makes the attacks more scary and startling to see he can actually move that fast. Like seeing a Hippo or Croc charge

It's easily the second best Godzilla movie ever imo right behind 54' OG godzilla, on the road part : I liked the modified roar, it was something new and played well into what godzilla was in the movie, A personification of destruction in the form of a monster (I just think of it as Godzilla movies haven't existed up until now and this reboots OG movies with better visuals and cgi and I hope that comes true), yeah godzilla's legs look a bit like a large suit and someone trying to walk in it while trying not to fall, but for $15 mil it's perfect, Monsterverse won't even pay actor fees in $150mil let alone $15mil. They didn't try to hide the legs (I like that) + we see them for a very long time, I was just mesmerised by how godzilla's face (mouth area) looked it looked like an ancient god / monster or something that directly came out of hell, it had rage, menace in his eyes. Plus the godzilla shots in water with just his face out were sheer horror and brilliance. (and in the climax actors on the ship made me feel like I was there with them against godzilla, great acting by them). Definitely one of the best movies of 2023 if not the best.

When you were talking about how America or American Godzilla movies made Godzilla seem like the hero, but how Godzilla was clearly the villian in this movie I feel think it made sense for us to make Godzilla seem like the hero because he was original based on the Atomic Bombs that we had dropped on Japan. Godzilla is the hero not to people in japan but to people in america because that's what saved millions of more young men who were being sent out to be killed by Japanese troops, just like how the Atomic bombs saved millions of American soldiers. Godzilla is the Atomic bombs. The Atomic bombs helped America but harmed Japan. American Godzilla saves humans.

When I watched the scene where Godzilla is chasing Koichi's tiny boat, I thought that was physical effects. It seriously looks that damn good! Loved this movie, and I gotta agree with the grade of A+

great review, great take. We're pretty much on the same page, but I woulda preferred things stayed as "not the tone they ended up" as say the 1954 one did. My biggest gripe is def the trademark screech/roar. So happy the Anguirus rumor turned out to be bs. Around the time of the mine chase I'm thinking "oh no, he gonna show up for the Third Act and will NOT fit the tone of this movie at all" I don't love the 2014 Legendary or Kong vs, but man do I have a soft spot for the 2019 King of the Monsters. I'm all-in on the terrible human plot, we've had MUCH MUCH more (Godzilla's Revenge (All Monsters Attack) but those shots of Ghids above the storm clouds yes pls I've got in 3rd with Gojira remaining in the top spot. Could def change upon rewatch. I can't believe this was a 15 mill budget and the CGI looks that good. I hope people side by side even the wonky walking shots with things like the highlights of the MCU this past year, Love and Thunder floating head def edged out Shin for me and I love how Zilla is basically Perfect Cell now

I like both anti hero and villain Godzilla but I prefer the complete asshole Godzilla like the OG because that's what he's supposed to be, a force of nature and personification of a horrible Disaster man kind has brought upon themselves. Not only that there's more depth into why he is like this towards humanity. This is my pet peeve about movies but certain movies need stop gambling large budgets in the hopes of doubling what they had only to not achieve the goal they wanna make and end up flopping

Gonna have to disagree respectfully on the roar. I don’t know if it’s the more original design, but I think the roar sounds closer to the original, and perfectly balances the familiarity of it with the horror of this “new” monster.

It literally does not sound closer to the original lol It's completely missing the high pitch at the beginning of the roar, and a few times was missing the echo at the end. It's a VERY generic sound.

​@@Th3BirdmanThey just merged 2 of his roars from the 1954 version into one, and that was the only roar he ever used in this movie. That 1954 soundbite you did play was the basis for the deep growling early Heisei series roar from 84-91, which is my personal favorite roar, and I'm bummed they didn't use that in this movie. Hell, even Shin Godzilla used that roar at the very end when he freezes up, and it sounded great there, despite all the intentional stock sounds in that movie. I'd even take some Millennium roars.

Birdman, you're currently needed elsewhere. CinemaSins just posted its video on Fast X - a movie that is RIPE for tearing a part - and somehow, almost every complaint is about how, for example, Brie Larson was great in Room, or how he'd rather watch Reacher and her interact as Reacher and Danvers, but in general it's just one long, constant "joke" about how they've made 10 of those movies now. I saw that pop up in my recommended and was like, "Ok, now here's a movie that should be easy to rip apart" but nope. Dude went with the dumbest shit to try to include as sins.

I used to praise the 2014 Gareth Edwards Godzilla for having human characters with some emotional involvement in the proceedings. Godzilla Minus One feels like the movie I was describing this entire time, the other one feels pretty shallow (minus Bryan Cranston) in comparison.

I enjoyed it, but I thought it was a little on the bland "why does this exist" side. It felt like a movie I'd seen many times before, but I did enjoy the Disney easter eggs, like Peter Pan lol I also added one of the songs from the film to my Apple Music (Knowing What I Know Now).

Godzilla Minus One did something most Godzilla films after 54' failed to do which was to make the human story actually MATTER in the grand scheme of the central narrative. Most of the time they're just there to be there because we need context that's easily understood by humans. So, we get human characters which serve the narrative just enough to help guide us through the course the monster action takes. Boring. Unnecessary. And ultimately, it just doesn't matter. But not in Godzilla Minus One. The characters are all intimately tied to the central narrative in ways which naturally and dynamically coexist with and are directly affected by Godzilla's presence. And, in turn, his existence is affected by them and the plans they draw up to try and defeat him. This kind of direct relationship between Godzilla and the human characters just hasn't been done well for far too long. And I'm glad this one finally did it right. The Monsterverse is the biggest offender of the downright shitty huamn writing. 2014's human story came the closest but was still far short of the goal of actually mattering in the long-term narrative. Ford was just in the right place at the right time by chance the entire film. He didn't actually matter. He was just there. 2019's KOTM and GvK both said "screw the human story" entirely and just gave us cardboard cutouts of characters to drive the plot forward as needed. And, ultimately, though the visuals are spectacular in both films the overall product ends up being boring and unimaginative since there's nothing to invest in aside from the 5-8 minutes of actually interesting Godzilla/monster scenes.

Even though I do prefer dub over sub (More with anime not so much live action) I actually do watch the sub over the dub if A, the dub is just painful to watch or B, if the sub is the only one that has been made and no dub version of this exists.

Ok, I saw it now, and WOW. I loved it. Normally I don't care for the human side plots in kaiju movies, but this movie plays it 100% straight and with such conviction I couldn't help but be hooked. 9.5/10 movie!
