I actually kinda liked the way Godzilla walked on land. It gave him an unsettling, almost alien feeling. Plus, it felt consistent with classic Godzilla movies where he was often played by a guy in a suit, and that’s the way he would walk then.

SPOILERS Can we just talk about those scenes when we see Godzilla stomping on people? That was done so well. People weren't in danger when he was about to step on them. They were in danger when he stepped near them. I genuinely think this movie did a lot of things better than some of the OG movies.

I left the theater thinking 2 things: 1. Godzilla is an absolute force of nature. No characterization; just a BEAST. While made it all the more terrifying. I was here for it all! 2. I ACTUALLY gave a shit about the human characters! That never happened in the Legendary Monsterverse Godzilla movies [except for Ken Watanabe]. WOW

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU. I really enjoy villains who have a backstory as to why they’re the way that they are, HOWEVER it is really nice to see an antagonist who’s *just evil.* He’s not tragic or broken. He is a monster. I also felt that having *actual* human stories that related to both Godzilla and other trauma made him more terrifying. It was nice to see (compared to the other Godzilla movies) the humans play a bigger role than just props to make him seem scarier.

I feel like if they only just used the original roars, like what Shin Godzilla did, then people would just criticize Toho of being uncreative and solely just relying on the classics in order to be good so that could be the reason why they changed up the roar a little bit. Just a possibility I thought off but honestly, you can't please everyone. I haven't watched the film yet but I'm definitely excited for it. Happy to see a vengeful, angry Godzilla again who actually has some character. Great work as always, BM!

With the whole dub vs. sub argument, it depends on the anime. Many dubs are subpar (at best) while a few others are really good. EDIT: Some of the dubs I like is because I grew up with those versions. As an adult, I like more subbed anime than dubbed.

I just have a nostalgic soft spot for dubs because that’s how i got introduced to anime. I was a toonami/ adult swim kid. Any anime ive been introduced to outside of that especially since streaming became a thing i naturally watch it the original way.

Takashi Yamazaki director of Godzilla Minus One is a fan of the 2001 film Godzilla King Ghidorah, Mothra Giant Monsters All out attack. Since 2001 GMK Godzilla is one of the most Evil versions of Godzilla it's no surprise Takashi Yamazaki took inspiration from GMK for Minus One Godzilla.

I see my local theater starts showing this movie this week. Definitely will stop by to check it out when heading home from work. GODZILLA been one of my heroes since first him as a little kid way back in those ancient days of 1960-1970s. Something about Godzilla stomping on all those little humans and ending their screams is soothing to the ears.

Godzilla works the best when he actually represents something. From the horrors of atomic weapons (original), the Fukushima disaster (Shin), or the horrors and trauma of surviving/rebuilding after a major war. This is top 3 in the franchise, no question. Everything from the human cast, Godzilla's design, the destruction (the atomic breath is the most devastating yet), the plan to kill him, everything. Wish there were more showings where I am :(. To nitpick, his roar is definitely a redo original 54 roar (the other variations, not the one shown in the video). As for the way he moves, while a bit janky at times, reminded me of his rubber suit days. With that, I do consider this a spiritual remake of 54.

The roar isn't iconic esk but it it's own thing with a twang at the end. I like that. It's like it's his own voice or accent. The walking was robotic especially vs when Godzilla decides to attack. That though, makes the attacks more scary and startling to see he can actually move that fast. Like seeing a Hippo or Croc charge

The funny thing for me is that I am a primarily DUB watcher of anime. Yes, DUBBED (sue me) and I am STILL going to see this movie Saturday. Got my tickets and everything. This is one of the very few cases where the fact that there's no dub (yet?) doesn't bother me. This and the OG Godzilla film. I said YET earlier because I THINK there was supposed to be a dubbed version available in theaters but I don't think it was able to be finished in time. At least that's what I've heard. If we get a dub with eh eventual home release, then the option is there at least.

Id argue thay Minus One's roar also helps in making him stand out compared to the version of Godzilla we here in America have. Both are different and the stories of those movies have different goals in mind. But both are great and frankly i loved Minus One it was an amazing movie and if i could id watch it again

When you were talking about how America or American Godzilla movies made Godzilla seem like the hero, but how Godzilla was clearly the villian in this movie I feel think it made sense for us to make Godzilla seem like the hero because he was original based on the Atomic Bombs that we had dropped on Japan. Godzilla is the hero not to people in japan but to people in america because that's what saved millions of more young men who were being sent out to be killed by Japanese troops, just like how the Atomic bombs saved millions of American soldiers. Godzilla is the Atomic bombs. The Atomic bombs helped America but harmed Japan. American Godzilla saves humans.

great review, great take. We're pretty much on the same page, but I woulda preferred things stayed as "not the tone they ended up" as say the 1954 one did. My biggest gripe is def the trademark screech/roar. So happy the Anguirus rumor turned out to be bs. Around the time of the mine chase I'm thinking "oh no, he gonna show up for the Third Act and will NOT fit the tone of this movie at all" I don't love the 2014 Legendary or Kong vs, but man do I have a soft spot for the 2019 King of the Monsters. I'm all-in on the terrible human plot, we've had MUCH MUCH more (Godzilla's Revenge (All Monsters Attack) but those shots of Ghids above the storm clouds yes pls I've got in 3rd with Gojira remaining in the top spot. Could def change upon rewatch. I can't believe this was a 15 mill budget and the CGI looks that good. I hope people side by side even the wonky walking shots with things like the highlights of the MCU this past year, Love and Thunder floating head def edged out Shin for me and I love how Zilla is basically Perfect Cell now

Birdman, you're currently needed elsewhere. CinemaSins just posted its video on Fast X - a movie that is RIPE for tearing a part - and somehow, almost every complaint is about how, for example, Brie Larson was great in Room, or how he'd rather watch Reacher and her interact as Reacher and Danvers, but in general it's just one long, constant "joke" about how they've made 10 of those movies now. I saw that pop up in my recommended and was like, "Ok, now here's a movie that should be easy to rip apart" but nope. Dude went with the dumbest shit to try to include as sins.

After watching It I don't think it's the best Godzilla film like many people do. The film is more of a good movie, but not really a good Godzilla movie. I don't think the film makers understood Godzilla as a character and I also had a lot of other problems with the film. In terms of the story, the first part wasn't great, but it got better as the film went on. But it overall isn't anything amazing or better than things I've seen from old tv shows or films.

Gonna have to disagree respectfully on the roar. I don’t know if it’s the more original design, but I think the roar sounds closer to the original, and perfectly balances the familiarity of it with the horror of this “new” monster.

It literally does not sound closer to the original lol It's completely missing the high pitch at the beginning of the roar, and a few times was missing the echo at the end. It's a VERY generic sound.

​@@Th3BirdmanThey just merged 2 of his roars from the 1954 version into one, and that was the only roar he ever used in this movie. That 1954 soundbite you did play was the basis for the deep growling early Heisei series roar from 84-91, which is my personal favorite roar, and I'm bummed they didn't use that in this movie. Hell, even Shin Godzilla used that roar at the very end when he freezes up, and it sounded great there, despite all the intentional stock sounds in that movie. I'd even take some Millennium roars.

I've been waiting to see this one but I might have to wait a little longer until it hits a streaming services. I don't think I'd be able to enjoy the film properly if I can't read the subs on a cinema screen since I'd have trouble reading them. Still, good to hear this Kaiju film throws back to the earlier eras of the genre. I hope this gets released outside of theaters soon.

I think this movie might be overrated. I have seen this movie, 1998 Godzilla, and the Monsterverse. Out of these 6 movies, Minus 1 for me is at #4 above 1998 and 2014 Godzilla. There was less Godzilla than there should have been.

Well, thank you at least for the explanation as to why I hated the first half of this movie. I hated it so much that I turned the movie off, and I don't know if I will ever bother watching the conclusion; even though I paid Amazon way too much for this awful movie. I always stayed away from Anime, as it looked almost Satanic to me. And what's with the storyline which has a bitter old woman hen pecking a milksop of a man? I thought that kind of obvious agenda didn't exist in Japan nowadays. I cannot think of another Godzilla movie that made me turn it off in disgust before; and I've seen all of them. Not even the worst G movies of the late 60s/early70s were this bad. Godzilla vs Hedora wasn't as bad as Minus One.

You have to understand the history of Japan for it to make sense, intuitively. After America firebomed and later nuked Japan (TWICE), Japan's surrender was seen as a major blow to their national pride, and effectively ended their imperialism. This placed Japan at 0 (zero), having to start over. When Godzilla showed up, he decimated an already decimated country even further, placing them at -1, or Minus One. Get it?
