Still a shame 2014 is so low, its ana actual movie with an artistic vision and goal that it nailed and hasn't been touched since in this universe. It made the monster feel like monsters not giant action figures. It and Skull Island are the only movies that actually had a vision and something to say other than, big monsters destroy things. KoM at least did that in an artistic way as some of those shots from that movie are still top tier in the franchise.

You know there was a point in history where the tone of Godzilla changed to appeal to a younger demographic. It leaned fairly heavily on the goof and toy perspective because they also wanted to sell merch. The movies made along that era were hit or miss, mostly miss, but still kept the Godzilla charm. If anything that's what these current monsterverse movies feel like and it's actually working all things considered. I'm in my 30s. I loved the tones of 2014 Godzilla and Minus One made me utterly emotional and invested in all characters including Godzilla. GxK makes me feel like a kid again. I was smiling, and having fun. Kids are also going to experience that emotion, and that's a good thing. That keeps the franchise going. It has to inspire a younger generation to live on.

Using a critical eye, in Monarch, they basically say if you go to hollow earth, time moves slower than on the surface. Wyatt is the same age when he comes back, and everyone around him has aged drastically. This movie completely ignores that. They’re jumping in and out and there’s no time dilation. Still really enjoyed it for what it was, a good popcorn flick. But it doesn’t even respect the rules its own universe laid out.

There's a lot of Greg's views I agree with. I myself also do not like Hollowearth at all. It takes away the scale from the movies. Watching Kong vs Godzilla again last night and I realized why I like that one more, even though the story loopholes and coincidences were worse in that one. The impact and scale of whenever Kong and Zilla are fighting is sooo good. I didn't feel that with this one. Additionally, they are taking away Godzilla's character. He is just a ball of instinct. They are doing a good job with Kong, I like what they are doing with Kong, but I hate what they are doing with arguably the titular character. And I agree. Call these movies Kong movies - Godzilla is not the protagonist in these movies. He is a foil and a Rival more than anything in these movies. Just call these movies - Kong vs Godzilla, and Kong: New Empire ft. Godzilla. Some things I liked about the movie, but very little. I actually think King of Monsters was a better movie than this one.

I love all of these in review episodes, but it does feel like Greg’s inclusion has recently become more and more hit and miss. If it’s something he already likes, he’s 100% in and not clearly isn’t as objective about it. If it’s not something he generally cares about (namely action, something he has repeatedly stated), he just seems disinterested and distracted (lots of points where he’s just looking at his computer or giving short “I didn’t like it” statements/not engaging in conversation). I don’t want him replaced or anything, it’s just a shame when he signs on for franchises he’s clearly not going to give a fair shot due to it not being his thing. It’d be like if Andy was actually on the conjuring universe reviews, and he was always not giving passionate or fair reviews because “oh horrors not my thing.” Glad the monsterverse got its review series, but i think kinda funny has a big enough collection of people that future series they review should involve people actually interested in the series’ they cover (no one would complain with more Mike, Blessing or Barrett on in review, either).
