The truly amazing thing about this scene is that the camera does not break from its view of Ingrid for several minutes. Can you imagine the bravery of Thulin to go through such an extended examination under the eye of the camera. Truly one of the bravest and most significant performances in cinematic history. The entire movie itself is a wonder. There are no wasted shots; each frame plays a role in telling the story. It is a beautiful film, perhaps a perfect film.

Astonishing. Thulin can convey so much passion and feeling without even changing the beat of her voice. A hugely underrated actress; how come we never hear about her in lists of the best of all time? This combined with her work in 'Cries and Whispers' and 'The Silence' seem enough to get her onto such lists.

what a film, deeply moving...shakes me right to the foundation every time...This is as good as it gets. And those Bergman closeups...stunning, riveting, and all so telling. "Cinema has conquered the human face" --- Bergman

The priest is abstract in his love, he isnt comfortable with earthly love and suffering, he is "lightness" personified. She is more physical and "heavy".

Mine too. I can't think of many films with as much to say about relationships, faith (and lack thereof), and the struggle to find meaning in life.
