In 2007, I was 10. Devastated my parents told me "heck no" when I asked for a ball python for a pet. I was sitting in the aisle of the library for hours, hitting the books on the best way to be a noodle parent to my future ball python. I am now in my early 30s & have yet to be a noodle parent. But the nostalgic memories of all my old-school research will pay off one day 😎

My friend Erika used to work at an exotic pet store. Apparently the animals were properly cared for because the owners actually cared, but it was still horrifying in its own way, namely because of the employees complete lack of basic first aid. One day she was trying to get a peice of driftwood off the top shelf, and it knocked over another peice of driftwood, which hit her in the head and knocked her unconcious. Did her coworkers call an ambulance, or wait a bit then call an ambulence like sane people? No, they drug her across the floor and hid her behind the checkout counter, because apparently, no one ever told them not to move someone who just had a head injury. Luckily, after waking up she was in good enough shape to drive herself to the ER, but it could have been a lot worse...

Many years ago a neighbor dug up a bunch of turtle eggs. They wanted someone to help them. I put all 28 eggs in a bucket of soil. With a heat lamp. Kept it damp. Kept them safe and a few weeks later they started hatching. They all hatched and they were Snapping Turtles. Once there yoke were absolved I started feeding them. Every week I took them to our pond and I placed them in a safe location. All but 7 took off and I had to keep them for winter. Once summer hit I took all 7 and released them. I went and hid and watched them. 6 took off and one came to me. I ended up keeping him for 7 years. He was the most meanest pet I had. Well except the crocodile monitors I still have. I named the turtle the plague because anything alive that was placed in his cage was eaten by morning. The 7th year I placed him where his siblings were and he took off. I miss him and hope hes still eating strong. Almost lost a few fingers but I miss him.

The word "tortoise" is a common name, and like most common names, is imprecise and used differently by different people in different contexts. Some people define a tortoise just as a turtle that lives on land, so a box turtle is a tortoise in that sense. In Australia, tortoise can even refer to any turtle, regardless of where it lives. Scientific terms and common english terms often overlap and appear to be equivalent, but they really are two different languages. They shouldn't be equated, and we shouldn't try to force one into following the rules of the other. In fact, they often complement each other quite nicely, and having both sets of terms can be very useful depending on the context. This is particularly the case with taxonomic groups, because common english names are often purely labels of convenience that are meant to be rough approximations that give you a good idea of something (other than highly detailed taxonomical information) very efficiently. Having to constantly qualify things ("a terrestrial member of the emydidae family of turtles", for example) can be quite tedious, and most people wouldn't understand you anyway.

I recently watched a video about parrot scams and its exactly the same as the one saying they need to send $250 or the turtle will die. You pay them for the animal, then they demand more for random weird shipping costs, and say if you don't send it the animal will die in a shipping facility. As soon as they start demanding extra money you didn't expect up front, back out and try to get your money back.
@nessamillikan62472 жыл бұрын
Man that’s disgusting, I’ve never heard of that before watching this video. I feel horrible for these poor animals being trafficked by these creeps. Whether they are bluffing or not on the die part, that’s a complete lack of respect for life, and there’s no way you’d get a healthy, thriving animal from ransoming criminals like this.
@suchnothing2 жыл бұрын
@@nessamillikan6247 luckily, in most cases there never was a parrot, or a turtle. They keep coming up with new things to charge you with until you realize the scam and block them. It still sucks big time for the people being scammed though. They can sometimes be out thousands of dollars before they realize what's happening, and it can be impossible to recover the losses.

The thought of trying to give my leopard geckos and red eared sliders proper care without the internet is horrifying, considering I got horribly incorrect information about BOTH from their respective pet stores. The got the turtles from (insert big chain store) and pretty much the only thing they got right was that they needed water. (they told us 20 gallons would be fine for years for two completely different sized turtles totaling about 11 inches of shell, sold us a basking platform too small for the bigger one, an underpowered heater, and improper filtration). The Leos I got from a local exotic store, they were MUCH better with their advice and I didn't see any unhealthy animals, but they sold me one hide for two geckos, and told my they would be a-ok to cohab because their both female (without telling us they may end up fighting for resources even if there is plenty and I need to keep an eye out). Overall a way better experience than the store that rhymes with letco. Not selling us enough hides was sort of secretly a plus because it saved me a good $50 for 5 more hides, but it encouraged me to get creative and create some hides myself. My RES are named Uncle Cheech and Spooder, and my Leos are Mango and Goober. They are all very happy reptiles because of the internet :)

I've been to one or two good exoctic pet stores in TN but they were easily outnumbered by all the shitty ones. As a young kid I got a chinchilla from an exotics store, which looked decent, but all of their animals had deformities or diseases that eventually popped up. ALL of their chinchillas teeth eventually misaligned and grew backward into their own heads. It happened to literally every person who bought a chinchilla from them. Even the people who had owned chinchillas already like my parents. We spent so much on vet bills trying to keep him alive and healthy, and he had to have all of his incisors removed. Eventually, he died due to a heart defect any way (I believe it was dilated cardiomyopathy, but I could be misremembering). So even though they were giving them the right care in the petstore, it didn't mean that they were ethically breeding any of the animals. I think they had to close eventually because everyone in town found out they were just inbreeding most of their animals to a dangerous degree.

There is not a lot of money in exotic pet care when you do it the right way, and there is not enough responsible owners for pet stores who promote the right enclosures, husbandry, vet care ect. Especially if they refused to sell things that were bad (like repti sand… or most small hamster cages) Also teaching proper care to someone trying to purchase an animal will likely push them away from buying because people don’t want what they think they want. People are terrible, cheap and ignorant when it comes to exotics. Stores have to reflect the consumer to make money.
