We have a ton of toads in my yard at night and I always have to move them off my porch at night before letting my dogs out at night. Year before last late late in the fall I opened my front door and a very tiny little toad was sitting on my step, just staring at the door. We were expecting snow that night...a decent fall so I was shocked to spot it. He wasnt moving he was so cold. I brought it inside and he immediately tried to (slowly) eat my fingers! I have him some of my love feeders and he ate them readily. I put him into a Q tub and have kept him ever since 🤷 He unburies himself when he hears me getting into his enclosure and comes out to get fed and I named him Oatmeal and you cannot convince me that he didn't want to live inside 😂

A pond in your front yard is going to turn into an incubation center for mosquito eggs. During the off season when my family's pool is closed, the cover fills with rain water and you can see tons and tons of mosquito larva swimming around everywhere by the time Spring comes around. Just something to think about.

Love toads so much. We clear land and trees from wooded areas for people to build on and when one is injured we take them home and rehabilitate them. Right now we have 8 baby toads and 6 adults. We kept them in through winter as they were not ready health wise before winter hit and was afraud they wouldnt winterize fast enough. The adults will be released at the first if next week. The babies still got a a while. We have fowlers and American toads

I can see one situation in which catching as many wild toads as possible might be a good thing - if there is an invasive toad in the area, like the cane toads in Australia. Just don't let them continue to breed in captivity after catching them. Also, local laws might prohibit keeping such species even if they are caught locally. Unfortunately, the cane toad situation is so bad that even if every subscriber to this channel went to Australia and caught a few cane toads, it wouldn't even make a tiny dent in the population. You are right about toads being full of pee. Years ago, I had a large great plains toad. Every time I picked it up, it would pee all over my hand within 30 seconds. I also had a Woodhouse's toad. It was not nearly as reliable about peeing, but it would let loose every now and then. I have thought about getting toads again, but the insect feeders can be a pain (I despise crickets). My top choice would be a cane toad, but they are illegal where I live because they have the potential to become invasive. It's unfortunate, but I have to agree with this law. As much as I like cane toads, I don't want them to become established in even more places where they are not native.
@Rekkarfox2 жыл бұрын
You can, in fact, catch as many cane toads as you like in Australia! Generally people humanely euthanise them and I also assumed they'd be illegal to have as pets... but I actually couldn't find any laws saying you CAN'T just catch and keep one, at least in my state. I personally wouldn't want one as I'm not super psyched about being sprayed with poison, but you do you!
@gamzee36102 жыл бұрын
@@Rekkarfox kinda morbid thought but I wonder if cane toads are edible... because I know in Florida there's restaurants that sell lionfish in order to fund/deal with them as an invasive species and I wonder if the same could be done with cane toads Turns out you can eat the legs but not much else, and the legs still seem kinda iffy
