This is beautiful but I think in the 1981 performance on her TV show is much more powerful. I believe that in that performance Lena was singing about herself . She is totally immersed in the lyrics, feeling every word. She is in another place. In fact , it's only when she finishes that she comes back from wherever she has been and seems shocked when she realises that she is in the studio in front of the audience. I believe that Lena could have been one of the greatest artists the world has ever seen. It's tragic what happened to her. Please keep promoting her like you do. We need to get her back in the public eye ( as with Eva Cassidy) . I'm psychic and Lena came to me asking me to warn parents not to push their children too hard. She said going nowhere was her story. I never realised until now how great she really was. May god bless her always . X

Alan, I totally agree with you that Lena's 1981 performance is more moving than this one. She was totally immersed emotionally and off in space in the other version. I love the higher quality and clarity of her voice in this one. But here, she is giving a performance. That same year in 1981, she did a high powered version of, "I've got love to keep me warm" where she put herself somewhere else as well to conserve her energy and make it as authentic as it was back in the 1940's. She continued to grow as a vocalist into her early 20's when the anorexia started taking a big toll on her body. I enjoyed her Tonight Show appearance and saw it when it Originally aired. I continue to watch it over and over again when she sang, her rendition of "End of the World".....she was such a PRO then. I have listened to and watched every video over and over that have been release since. So much talent, and gone way too soon.

It has been documented by her Dad and by those who worked with Lena on her Show, that it was Lena herself who was the perfectionist, and accepted nothing but her best. She was NOT like Judy Garland or Shirley Temple who were pushed by the Studios. Lena did all the extra takes to get the songs to her perfection level. It was a very high bar to reach!

Unlike a lot of viewers here comparing this with the 1981 TV show version, I like seeing singers do things differently with the same song. Lena was not your robot!

One of the greatest singers of all time and so underrated. How sad to die at 35? Neil Sedaka's 'Going nowhere 'sums it all up for me. A beautiful young woman who really gives this song justice. She is our faith in Jehovah and our friendship with him grow as well.HOW ABRAHAM MAINTAINED HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD9, 10. (a) What is needed for a friendship to become stronger? (b) What shows that Abraham cherished and strengthened his friendship with Jehovah? 9 A friendship can be a precious treasure. (Read Proverbs 17:17.) However, friendship is not like an inanimate thing that we might purchase and then store somewhere to gathermodest , in fact quite retiring in her disposition, and indeed a tormented soul. This is as others have said Lena singing about herself. The emotion she puts into this song is quite amazing and I agree as she sang she was in another world. So sad to lose her so young, and so sad that she had such a tormented life. As much as I enjoy Neil's rendition ,Lena's tops it.I can't seem to get a download for Lena singing this song apart from U Tube. Can anyone help me.

the other version was made in a studio this is in front of a live audience , she still sings it superbly , what a voice , if only she could know how her talent would endure and how revered she is , BLESS HER BEAUTIFUL SOUL xxx RIP Lena xxx

compare this to the 1981 version, here she is just singing the song, albeit very well sang but i have the feeling in the 1981 version for whatever reason that night she sang it with with so much feeling and pain - her eyes said it all.

@Izzymoggington ...Yes.. I agree, I have watched the 1981 version many times and keep returning to it. It just seemed to mean more to her on that occasion and she showed more emotion and power of voice when perfoming it in that other clip.

Lena Zavaroni is a story of Great talent and Tragic heartbreak especially for her family who let her go at 9 years of age so she could go off into the world to share her beautiful voice but for which they all paid a huge price with the life of their beautiful girl to one of the worst traps of fame. Lena’s story is sadly a warning to all parents considering the show biz pathway for their children because it rarely ends well if history is to be our meter.

The guitarist got on my bloody nerves. Completely inappropriate twiddling. I think he (or she, but probably he) distracted her from her performance.
