Scott brought the idea of bringing his HS trio to the NBC series the Sing Off to Ben Bram when he and been were both involved with the USC acapella group. Ben was involved with music production for the show. Ben loved the trio but said they would have to add a bass and beatboxer to compete. At that point most of the groups on the show had 15 to 20 members. Ben already knew Avi (who had lead his junior college glee club to a national championship) and together they found Kevin via youtube. The group met for the first time 24 hours before their audition.

There are multiple interviews with them describing how they do their mixes themselves and how they started in their own home doing all of it, on KZbin and how they discovered Kevin on KZbin from a video of Kevin’s Ana Avi as well

They have the same producer from the first day. The "sixth ptx member" Ben Bram. He's the one who found Kevin and Avi. They make their productions so, that they can do them live in the same way. Or even better.

I hope you go back and watch it again. Granted, Kevin (beatboxer) is incredible, but that was some brilliant singing from the trio and Avi (bass). As always, enjoyed the reaction.

Live performance can also be mixed. The fact that there were multiple mics means that pretty much by definition there was at least some basic mixing going on to make sure volume was balanced properly between them. In this context mixing doesn't mean faking it or making it sound better, it means not detracting from it. I'm sure you've heard some live performances where the sound balance from different members was really off. That's bad mixing. Good mixing should be 'invisible' to some extent.

Live performances are mixed - especially when you have mic set up like that. It's not a" wrong" thing to do, everyone does it, and is simply a case of adjusting decibel levels!
