Golden Eagle With Injured Talons Recovers

Susan and Martin were called out about a Golden Eagle on the ground. Martin captured the eagle and noticed some minor problems with the eagle's talons. After just a couple weeks of rest and lots of food, the eagle was fully recovered. Quickly healthy, this eagle moved around a lot in the chamber and Martin feared the eagle may injure himself. The eagle had to be returned to the wild as soon as possible, so we were not able to get video of the release.

Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.

Animals have a kind of 6th sense about good vs bad people. I was thinking the exact same thing watching how the eagle in the tree stayed in the tree with Martin below but left when Susan got close. They KNOW Martin is there to help.

Animals feel our energy. If we are calm they don't get upset so easily. If you have a pet dog cat bird or horse they can tell when we are upset they know it. Same when we are happy and excited they know it too. Even wild animals naturally have the instinct to not want to be around humans. Approaching one calm and not full of nervous energy makes a difference. That's what I've noticed.

You really see how big eagle talons are compared to Martin's fingers. I'm so glad this beautiful guy got healed and released back into the wild. I've haven't seen very many eagles this winter. Usually when I drive from Buffalo Wyoming to Sheridan I count eagles. Normally I see 8 on average. Not this winter I'm lucky to see two. Love these Majestic birds!

Happy he recovered, hope the injury upon release was minor so he's okay, and Martin too! Want to say that the way Martin speaks always has my kitten jump in my lap, hihi. Last night I had to take her to the vet for an emergency and I kept soothing her the same way, using the same tone of voice, even in English as in Dutch it doesn't feel the same. It seemed to work a treat and calm her during the drive over & back

1:50 the determination to get that injured bird. I would probably pee my pants if I got that close to a wild eagle. Let alone having to catch him (or her) even if they are injured. Martin is not phased at all, he sees the wounded bird and just steps up and catches him and then take him out of the net for quick inspection. And then say hi, as if they've known each other for years already. Probably one of the many reasons why you are such a great wildlife rescuer and why I am just a youtube viewer Also I keep being amazed by eagles. Martin holds him on his arm and the look on the eagle is something else. The look of a king, of a tzar, a pharaoh. So regal. A look that tells you right away who's the boss and don't mess with them, even if you are holding their feet

Wow you guys have such commitment to these giant birds - I didn't think about prarie dogs being a source of food/prey for them I currently have 4 & I've been keeping them as pets for about 9 yrs now & I have been bitten pretty bad more than once & I can honestly say a prarie dog can inflict some serious damage claws are like razors & teeth that are very sharp - I'm guessing the golden is as you say not been able to find food very well maybea a,little thin / weak? I'm thinking the bites might be infected? But you guys will fix this golden I'm 100% sure :)

Absolutely loved the medical exam! It didn't seem like the eagle hated it all that much, either. lol You can tell from their demeanor and eyes that they are baffled at the handling they receive from Martin, they are like "I am so shook right now... this huge beast isn't hurting me. I guess I could go for a fight, but this apex beast seems to know what he's doing, so I better sit tight". 😂😂😂

We usually don't put them on a scale, Martin judges if weight is high or low by feeling their keel bone.

A minor glitch? You were missing good part of your body lower half and both arms.. Love the Golden. Seen many often on the back roads of Arkansas. I have yet done a painting of the golden . I Did a bald eagle pair. Unfortunate the female became very ill. So they said . She was not able to get a lift off. They said she had the Bird Flu and had to be put down. The male stuck around for about a week and then flew away. Sad to see them go. I suppose many neighbors did not mind.. Thank you..
