Mario and Wish getting nominated alongside Suzume and the Boy and the Heron is a real monkey's paw situation. Thrilled to see two anime films, but a bummer that we won't also see the likes of Nimona or TMNT. Edit: pleasantly surprised to see Hisaishi get recognition! I admit that I don't closely follow the score nominations for these shows, but I feel like they almost always seem to go to the "Best Picture" type films, which I get, but it isnt really a shock anymore. Genuinely believe some of his work can match the likes of artists like John Williams in terms of memorable music, but with a sort of wistfulness that is hard to explain, and perhaps a key component in Japanese music.

I cannot put into words how thrilled I am to see Suzume and Joe Hisaishi nominated. Really hope the same happens at the Oscars, and that The Boy and The Heron wins Best Animated Film and Best Original Score. That Suzume nomination especially made my day because it was the first thing I saw when I woke up today, and the last thing I ever hoped/expected would happen this awards season. I would've loved to have seen Naoki Sato nominated for Best Original Score for Godzilla Minus One, but that was a long shot given how few people have probably watched that film. Really hope that award ends up going to Joe Hisaishi, which is insane to think bc I was so confident that no one could beat Ludvig Goransson for my favorite score of the year after I watched Oppenheimer. The REALLY crazy part is, I'm not even a fan of most modern Japanese media 😅 And yet suddenly I find that Suzume, The Boy and The Heron, and Godzilla Minus One are my top films this year 😂

May December is a parody of a Lifetime Original Movie, and I think that's how they're justifying its placement in the Comedy/Musical category... it's the kind of film that uses the aesthetic of a trashy Lifetime movie, and while it is dealing with very serious subject matters, part of the film's message is how any form of media can trivialize even the most horrific thing that can happen, no matter how well-intentioned it can be... I laughed quite a bit watching it, though most of it was uncomfortable laughter... I wouldn't call it a comedy myself, but this is the way it's being justified...

... Why give an award for Box Office achievement? You can see which one made the most money. Maybe it's an award for unexpected record breakers? Like having Oppenheimer make a whole bunch of money in spite of it being a 3 hour long historical biopic which hasn't really been done before, or a video game adaptation being a box office juggernaut but it's so stupid, it's something that can be objectively measured. Didn't Dead Reckoning lose money? Or would have lost money if it weren't for the 57 million pounds it got as a subsidy?

I think the blockbuster award is an excuse to continue ignoring them during awards season because they have a designated category. Like how animated movies aren't nominated for best picture ever since it got its own category in the 90s. This year there are a couple blockbusters that are also in the best film categories, but that's more a testament to those films than to the usefulness of the category.

Maybe after award season, when the movies are slowing down a bit, you could do a "Awards Process: Behind The Scenes" type video explaining things that you hit upon in this video, such as deadlines and exactly WHY you aren't able to watch everything. I know a lot of it has to do with international stuff combined with the "Let's wait til the end of the year to release our movie, that way it'll be fresh in the minds of the awards people" mentality, but I'm *SURE* there's a lot that most of us don't know. And, of course, in your case I'm sure that you had one or two extra things going on this past Fall (again, congrats!)
