The Watcher each to their own but Goldeneye is a classic bond film and for me at least superior to casino purely for the reason that I have seen Goldeneye so many times and it's still brilliant. I watched it and all the Craig bonds in prep for Spectre and Royale really falls apart after Le Chiffe dies. The 3rd act is just a bit anti climatic. If didn't like Goldeneye I reckon you won't like Spectre as they are both films that don't break any new ground with the bond template but rather are typical bond films that are immensely enjoyable
@adamgallacher50399 жыл бұрын
The problem with me is I grew up with brosnan so I can be biased but for me he's a great bond and a great one for the 90s. He may certainly borrow from the previous actors but this was his first film and I think it's fair to say by his second he was very much his own bond. I always think he was like a tougher version of Moore and minus die another day had a very good run as bond.

To be honest, I don't like that scene. Why does Bond become so sadistic that he catches Trevelyan before falling the first time -- only to, then, gleefully drop him to his death? Trevelyan was once Bond's friend. Therefore, I would think Bond would have been more regretful about having to kill him. That ending could've used so much more depth.

No one ever seems to mention Tomorrow. It's my second fav Brosnan Bond movie after all time favorite Bond movie Goldeneye. Everyone says "All Brosnan's other Bond movies sucked" but they sometimes mention World is Not Enough as the exception with never any mention of Tomorrow. Tomorrow's GREAT!! Jonathan Pryce is one of my favorite Bond villains. His portrayal of Elliot Carver is more than a match for Bardem's Silva. The henchmen are spectacularly effective. It's got some neat concepts like the drill torpedo .... and that remote controlled chase scene in the parking garage! I could write a whole other post on why that scene's awesome. About the only criticism I have of TND is its criminal misuse of Terri Hatcher. I mean this woman was born to be a Bond girl but her part in the movie is just wasted on her.
@fableable40968 жыл бұрын
Roger roger I agree. the world is not enough was up there with goldeneye although I wasn't a fan of Denise Richards. tomorrow never dies was okay. Maybe because valentine zuchosky wasn't in it :p die another day is not even worth mentioning, I wish they never made it
@brianpaul85569 жыл бұрын
Goldeneye was Brosnan's best outing. That being said, I can't say I hate his three others, but they were considerably weaker. The main problem is they would start out strong, and go the direction of a Rambo film. The biggest sinner on that list is Tomorrow Never Dies. I don't think The World is Not Enough gets enough credit though. However another case of a Bond film starting out interesting, and then completely jumping the shark was another Brosnan Bond film, Die Another Day. I love how that one began, with Bond getting captured by a foreign military, tortured, then escapes, going rogue, and operating without Q Branch, then it goes tits up, with a Face/Off style clinic, okay fine, I'll suspend some disbelief. I was done with it when the invisible car came onto the scene. I sat for the duration of that picture in what a potential girlfriend of mine calls "Resting Bitch Face". I was fine with having no more Bond films, if that was what we were getting. Then Casino Royale debuted and I was in love with the Bond films again. Great review, Chris. Always entertaining.

+Brian Paul Yeah, that first act of Die Another Day is so engaging (could do without the surfing and the CGI though); the fencing/sword fighting scene was also a keeper.
@brianpaul85569 жыл бұрын
It really was, I mean I know Bond going rogue had been done in Licence To Kill, but this was just as interesting. The fencing scene was great too, because, we'd never seen Bond sword fight before. So much potential in Die Another Day, just got thrown out. Let's not forget the space based magnifying glass either. If they really had to go the route of space based weapon (again) maybe tungsten kinetic rods like in G.I. Joe: Retaliation would have been a better and more sinister route. Not that I'm trying to praise G.I. Joe: Retaliation, but it would have been a far better note for Brosnan to leave on. Just an opinion, to float around.
@Paul91-9 жыл бұрын
+Generic Name I honestly thought they fucked hard once they got to the stupid Ice Palace. The Cuba stuff was good and the fencing stuff in London was also cool.
@brianpaul85569 жыл бұрын
irish91ify Oh yes, I almost forgot completely about the ice palace. All of the vodka martinis in the world, could never will never make that go away. It's almost as if they built that whole set, just to have a damned car chase/duel in. The main henchman of the villain looked like a rejected Star Wars Prequel era villain. So many things after the invisible car, and ice palace to pick apart. It's like they made half of a good Bond film, and than took some ideas from Batman and Robin. I should pick apart the end credits for any evidence that Joel Schumacher was on set at any point.

The soundtrack - it's true that the opening car chase has a goofy track playing. But the rest of the movie has really intense music. The facility music is cold and cool and works well, and the archive shootout/cradle chase at the end is my favorite piece of action music from the franchise. And I really love how the classic Bond theme is used so sparingly during moments that allow some sense of humor. Because the Bond theme IS kinda goofy - only use it for scenes that allow for a little humor. The tank chase suits that perfectly. Great soundtrack.

The closest analog to the movie is the Fallen Monument Park, but the model I think they used was based on one in Budapest. For them to meet there is heavily symbolic of the post Soviet world, guys like Bond trying to find his place after the Cold War (see also: M's monologue), and people like 006, whose parents were Cossack outcasts, and the second and third level effects of the Cold War on the modern (1995) day.

No, Martin Campbell nailed his movie genius. He really knows how to make "GoldenEye" works and all of these clever action sequences were amazing. He made his opening sequence great, fast paste action pack scenes, memorable characters, nostalgia backgrounds that we're referring to the game, the music is jawbreaking awesome, and everything else is perfect. I fucking love this movie and it's so fucking awesome. One of my favorite films of all time and I can watch this and never get tired. As a Bond fan myself, it still consider one of the greatest Bond films for over 20 years ago and it's a perfect action film. Even the video game will be never forget for our nostalgia young times and both of them were marvelous. I love "GoldenEye" and please go see it to believe it because you have to. I'm giving my movie a "A+."

I really don't think there's anything controversial about proclaiming Martin Campbell as the best Bond director. I think most would actually agree as there's really no competition (Sam Mendes is a great director, but Skyfall honestly underwhelmed IMO despite being gorgeous to look at). The fact that both his entries are considered two of the best (if not *the* best) films in the franchise says it all. Bottom line: bring him back for the new Bond actor.

When I was a kid I picked out Brosnan for Bond at the point when he was being Remmington Steele. It took fifteen years for this to happen, but I was pleased to find out that it was only his commitment to that contract which prevented him from being selected at the time by the Bond team!

In Casino Royale Bond really did feel like a superhero. The movie took a story where Bond was originally at his most vulnerable for the vast majority of it and made him unfazed by those same events. I mean the guy gets hit in the balls and jokes it off in the movie. He screams his head off in the novel. I get that there are differences between the movie and novel but I really did feel like Casino Royale was the superhero version of Bond and that is the big idea behind the reboot. Umberto Eco has an essay about the superheroization of Bond in the Casino Royale film too.
@IMmephiles9 жыл бұрын
+Theyungcity23 You missed the point of that scene it seems. Bond uses his quips and one liners to make peace of his mind and deal with awful situations. When he was being tortured, he was trying to make Lechiffre give up by making it seem like he was barely affected, even though you could see he clearly was. He doesn't "joke it off", it's an important part of his character. Much like how he uses sarcasm to hide how much he cares about M in Skyfall. Throughout the rest of the film, he gets fucked up a lot, and it affects the action, like in the parcours scene. When he says "the bitch is dead", that doesn't mean he never loved Vesper either, now did it? It's all about reading between the lines.
@Theyungcity239 жыл бұрын
+Generic Name To say I didn't get it is a bit insulting. I get that he's playing off a real pain in both the examples you mentioned. But the fact that he's even able to speak in that situation where most men would be out of their minds, on the verge of dying makes him seem superhero like, almost invulnerable. In the book he fears that he will fall in love with The Figure. No such fear is portrayed in the movie. That's what happened in the first novel of the series. That's the character as defined by his creator in his first appearance. To directly do the opposite in that scene where originally the character could only be described as defeated and make him defiant is a tremendous difference. He's bordering on invulnerability. In the movie he gets revenge on the guy who betrayed him . In the book the guy gets away, laughs and Bond and makes it clear that Bond has little power. It's the exact opposite in the movie and the director writer clearly made a conscious decision to do so. And this isn't just me. I'm paraphrasing an academic essay that makes the same reading: that Bond in the reboot is like a superhero. It's not like I and the writer of that peer reviewed essay didn't understand the movie.
@IMmephiles9 жыл бұрын
Theyungcity23 Lechiffre wouldn't actually try to hit him unconscious, he needed to hear the password from him. So he wouldn't be "on the verge of dying". And the book is decades old, just because the same doesn't happen scene for scene doesn't make Bond a superhero. Also, the guy does get away, rewatch Quantum of Solace (or don't because that movie sucks). And really, the "guy who bertrayed him" was Vesper herself mostly. And Bond not fearing love isn't because he's vulnerable, it's an important trait of his character. He's too confident in his skills (which was excellently hinted at when he finds the dead body of a woman he seduced for info in the 2nd act) to fear such a thing, and so when the love and bertrayal do win it hits all the harder. And even if it isn't, calling not fearing love "bordering on invulnerability" is a ridiculous hyperbole. And feel free to say which academic essay, but I don't think it proves anything when most movie critics don't even agree with that paper. It also seems like you're unable to for your own opinion and just point at what some smart guy said. I don't even think his opinion is much more valuable than most Bond fans. But really, you're not even stating why he seems invulnerable, just why he seems less vulnerable than in the decades old book. That's not the same thing at all. And don't feel insulted. This is youtube, you're a big boy now, get over it.
@Theyungcity239 жыл бұрын
+Generic Name This is my own opinion. It's just so happens that someone else agrees with me. The book being old doesn't take away it's credibility. It was the written by Fleming, the guy who knows Bond best. And how do you know that most critics don't agree with that interpretation? Most critics don't talk about that aspect of the story. And you can agree with multiple interpretations of a story. Somebody having a different reading isn't an assault on you. And you don't gently ball torture a guy. As soon as you start torturing a guy's balls in that way you are prepared to kill him.
@IMmephiles9 жыл бұрын
Theyungcity23 I just don't buy that a trained agent would pass out when a guy trying to keep him conscious is smashing his balls. And yeah, maybe it's your opinion, but you're being way too hyperbolic. Bond was more human than he'd been in decades and people still think it isn't enough. Making him a total love fearing consciousness losing pussy would have alienated everyone, I think we already got more humanity out of him than I would have ever expected.
