A lot of people will frown, however I use WD-40 when I install my pistons.

AG , thank you for teaching us. I look forward to every new episode because I like to learn more and more about engine building. I've dome it for a long time but still need more knowledge and everyday we learn is a good day.

Finishing off the night in the shop watching your video. Thanks for always emphasizing the important small details. It really helps refresh our memories when we don't do this as often as you do. Nice timing for this build. I just picked up my 4 bolt 69 block from the machine shop yesterday afternoon. It is .060 now with a 3.75 stroke so it's a 388 cu in deal. We used KB 13 cc dish hyper pistons, GM 5.7 forged rods with ARP bolts, eagle cast crank and internally balanced it all. Pistons are just a hair below the deck. Haven't measured yet but .004 to .005 or so I believe. I'm going to use a 64 or 65 cc head for a static compression ratio of about 10.2 to 1 with an .039 head gasket. Going head, cam and small parts shopping this week. Goal is a minimum of 450 HP and 450 torque, 91 octane pump gas and 12 inches of vacuum at least. Elevation here is about 3500 ft. Quick fuel 750 vacuum secondary carb will be used for now with a possible efi upgrade later. Cam and head suggestions based on your experience are welcome. Going into my 73 Z28 that currently has the original Turbo 400 with a 2200 stall and 373 gears. Biggest issue I can see for making that power is the 350 in it currently has a performer intake on it for hood clearance considerations. I do not know if an air gap intake will fit under there though so I might be out of luck with those goals. Merry Christmas Alan and company enjoy the holiday's!

I did learn one thing new. The ends of the expander ring should face up. Didn't know that. 😊

I brought out a stack of old soft cover books from the old days last night, right after watching the GG video which I re-read the first chapter of the Bill Jenkins book. Thanks to Al Gold for stirring that up for me! Tonite I will be in my shop playing with a '66 327/275 that I expect to pull 375hp out of with the only aftermarket big parts being the camshaft & intake manifold.. It will be going into my 39 Packard sedan!

Hi Al ------ you mention throughout your videos that ---- High Pressure oil pumps are not needed ---- For me it's a D.I.Y. at home --- so just a hone ---- will mic up clearances on mains and rods just to see what they are at ---- miles on this engine are unknown --- got it just about all apart --- plugs were clean --- tops of pistons are not all carboned up as well as the heads --- since this will be just a hone and bearings and rings ---- going with what it is at --- would a High Volume pump be good to install instead of an OEM one --- It's a '79 Pontiac 301 that was put into a '56 Pontiac ------ Thank You for the videos you put out ---- Alot of INFO to be had ------ Hope you have a Merry Christmas ----- Rodney

Thanks for the question Rodney. If your clearances are within spec. i would not see a reason to change the pump. Merry Christmas to you. AG

I used standard oil pump on 2 SBC a 350 and a 305 both FT cams and they have 50-60 psi at idle on cold start with 10w30 oil 25psi when oil gets up to temp, 60psi at 1500rpms hope this helps

That oil pump that was in it was bbc pump. Definitely don’t need that

I agree, I actually didn't recognize the part number as a big block pump, but I could see that it was too big. Thanks for commenting Racer. AG
