Wonder if it's the gasoline some are added with ethanol which can destroy even fuel lines for fuel

@@GoldwingDocs I checked out the link which took me to a picture of that part in the transmission failures. That looks to me to be a clutch basket in the box in that photo. I am curious to know if the bolt in the second picture that is obviously snapped in half, that I am assuming his getting broken and getting stuck in the transmission somewhere causing the failure while the engine is running. I wonder if the machines that are having this issue our machines that carry two passengers., Possibly pulling a trailer? Or possibly riders that are a little harder on the machine

Just a minor correction Scott - the fuel pump is not a centrifugal pump it is a rubber vane positive pressure pump where the shaft is off center in the housing so the vanes compress fuel on one side and pull in fuel on the opposing side. These pumps create approx 60 psi

it’s an old story, suzuki had problems, 15 years ago with ethanol fuel blend. Here in the United States it is legal to put 10% ethanol in the fuel. Every gallon that is produced by the oil companies get that oil company a $.45 tax break. Every gallons of non-ethanol fuel they create, they only get a $.10 tax break. So they are not in any hurry to stop making ethanol blended fuel… what about the transmission failures on the gold wings. That’s what I thought. This video was about. Transmission lock ups on the gold wings… I sold my GL 1800 Goldwing in 2021. I have seen some reports that the GL 1800 gold wings all the way back to 2001 are having transmission lockup problems. Some part comes loose or comes out of its place in the transmission and gets caught in the gears. this, as you can imagine, causes catastrophic damage and a solid lock up of the rear wheel because the transmission is locked. Pulling the clutch and does not free up the locked back wheel… pulling the clutch and simply disconnects the driveline between the engine and the transmission. Once the transmission explodes internally, that rear wheel stays locked. You won’t even be able to push the bike off the road if you don’t crash because the rear wheel will not rotate at all. I had that happen one time on a transmission. One of the gears seized on the main shaft, it broke seven gears in the transmission. I was doing about 60 miles an hour, I got into a horrible fishtail, I pulled the clutch, and it did nothing. When I finally came to a stop, I had dragged my fairly new rear tire down to the cords.. passing motorists helped me get my machine off the road because it would not move. Luckily that was a light bike, it was a Yamaha RZ 350. It was totally my fault because I did not have enough oil in the transmission. I thought the gearbox and the engine cases were the same as on an RD 350 which held 1.1 quarts of oil. So that’s all I put in, I found out later that the transmission on an RZ 350 holds almost 2 quarts of oil.. That’s why it seized.. I can’t imagine what that would be like on an 800 pound motorcycle, especially if I had a passenger on the back..

I had a transmission lock up. It is terrifying. The back wheel locks solid. Pulling the clutch and does not let the rear wheel rotate because the clutch is between the engine and the transmission, it is not between the transmission and the rear wheel, so you have more than a 50-50 chance of going down hard if you were going faster than 20 miles an hour.. This is the most life-threatening thing that could happen while you are riding a motorcycle. I have had a front tire go flat at speed on a roadrace track, I could still maintain control. I have had 4 road race track engine seizures, pulling the clutch in frees the back wheel to keep rolling.to a stop.. I hit 2 deer , one in the ribs on my BMW K 1200 LT at 70 miles an hour. The headlight area hit the deer in the ribs. I saw that deer for a split second before impact. I just coasted to a stop with no lights in the dark. The second deer collision I had at 7 AM on my way to work on my Honda pacific coast at 35 miles an hour. I did not go down either time. I just pulled the clutch in, stayed off the brakes, and coasted to a stop on the side of the road… but that Transmission seizure I had locked the transmission solid. One of the gears seized on a shaft, causing seven other gears in the transmission to lose their teeth, Hopelessly locking the transmission. My bike began to fishtail going slightly uphill. On my way to work. I thought for sure I was going to go down.. I pulled the clutch in which did absolutely nothing. The rear wheel stayed locked.. because it was the rear wheel, the skid mark was about 150 feet long. It dragged a Perelli phantom tire down to the cords, that tire had less than 1000 miles on it… I was doing about 60 miles an hour on concrete that was pretty Abrasive/ .. I had all my gear on as usual, that black, uphill, fishtail skidmark was on the road all that summer. I passed it twice a day, and it reminded me how close I came. When the bike finally stopped. I was grateful I did not go down. Since the transmission was locked., I could not roll the bike off the road. Some people passing by stopped to help me drag the bike to the side of the road… when I got that engine out of the frame and split the cases, I saw just how bad it was in there. I had to buy seven gears and the main shaft… The reason the transmission seized was entirely my fault. I was running it on just 1 quart of oil in the transmission. I thought that’s what it took, actually it was supposed to have a little more than 2 quarts of oil. It makes me cringe when I think about where that transmission could have locked up on me, on some twisty back road, which definitely would have been worse for me, I commuted on back roads to, and from work that are lined with metal guard rails that have those beams holding up the main guardrail..You certainly don’t want to slide into one of those beams holding up the rail. in Europe, they are adding a Row of metal or plastic below that top rail to prevent motorcyclists and bicycles from being decapitated, possibly by sliding under those rails that are only designed to keep cars on the road not motorcycles.. I had a GL 1800 Goldwing for two years, smoothest bike I ever owned, great brakes, comfortable, but not as roomy, as I would like, but the thought of having a transmission locked up on that thing is terrifying.. I sold the motorcycle in 2021, that was before I heard of these transmission explosions on gold wings just this year/2024.. it was a perfect motorcycle, I have a video on my KZbin channel giving my comparison. Thoughts on what it was like to own a Goldwing compared to my current motorcycle at the moment, a 2008 Yamaha royal star venture. My third Venture since 1986. I keep trying other big bikes, but I keep going back to the Venture’s… I have owned and worked on both, and it’s just easier to work on a venture, even if the Goldwing is more refined.. if I still had my Honda, GL 1800 Goldwing that is the subject of these failures, I wouldn’t ride that bike again until it was inspected under warranty or not , at Hondas expense. This is a life-threatening issue. The owners must be made aware of what could happen when the transmission locks.. I can’t believe the national highway safety administration is not demanding a universal recall. I guess they’re going to wait till there are multiple fatalities before they do something… if you want to test what your bike will do with a locked transmission, on most bikes, just stand on the back brake and dont let go.. since the late 1970s, some machines have the integrated brake system invented by moto guzzi.. my 1979 Guzzi SP1000 had integrated brakes. The pedal gave 70% pressure to the left front caliper, 30% brake pressure to the rear caliper. The second front disc was controlled by the Front brake lever.. That system was adopted by Yamaha and Honda in the early 1980s. Honda Goldwing’s had it, Yamaha ventures, Venture royale had it from the start beginning in 1983. My 86 Yamaha Venture royale had it, my current royal star venture has it, my current Honda, NT 700, 2010 non-ABS motor cycle has it. So you can’t test that theory on motorcycles that have integrated brakes, of locking the back wheel with your rear brake pedal at speed and seeing what will happen. But you will find out what happens when your transmission locks up… you won’t be able to test that way with a machine that has ABS brakes. But just go along and slam the rear brake on your machine if it doesn’t have ABS, and see what happens… If you are lucky, you will skid in a straight line, but you will probably start to go sideways and possibly high side. At any rate, you will be completely out of control on a 900 LB hunk of metal and plastic. this is an issue for the national highway, safety council to step in and ground all of these motorcycles until they are fixed. This is life-threatening. I can’t emphasize that enough. once word gets around after some of the fatalities that are going to happen, due to transmission lock ups, the value of these gold wings will go right down the toilet. just like what happened to the Chevrolet Corvair when Ralph Nader declared them to be “unsafe at any speed”.. that was not a fact, that was his opinion, but it killed the car.. when you are riding a machine that something like this is possible to happen, you can’t think of nothing else, except what might happen, and it takes all of the entertainment and the joy and the fun out of riding.. and you will certainly not want to risk taking one of your kids or grandkids, or your wife, or your girlfriend on the back of your Goldwing, and risk their life also.. Because a motorcycle can tolerate a second person on the machine as a passenger, but how many of us have experience trying to control an out of control motorcycle that is even more top-heavy with a passenger? The national highway safety council needs to step in on this emergency, and ground all of the possible problem machines until they are fixed. No matter how long it takes… The Internet has lots of stories and examples of these transmission failures. What is the acceptable number? What is the acceptable percentage, one of 1000? 20 out of 1000? what is the acceptable fatality rate? how much risk is Honda willing to take while letting this get swept under the rug? Can the dealers be held liable? If there are records of service bulletins from Honda to the dealer’s, the dealer’s will be held responsible also for knowingly, allow this catastrophe to happen. search KZbin for any number of transmission failures with these machines. You probably don’t have enough time in the day to watch them all… I am sad for Honda for something like this happening to them. They created what I would consider the most perfect motorcycle ever. The Honda Goldwing. I have ridden the 1975 model when it was new. It was also just as smooth as glass… but, like humans, over the years, the weight increased little by little, but unlike humans, the power rates went up and up little by little. Also, that’s a lot of stress on a transmission, trying to move more weight with more power, and using the same lubricant to lubricate the engine as well as the transmission. You don’t see that in cars or trucks or buses.. only motorcycles. Maybe it’s time that companies like Honda reconsider having separate lubrication for the transmission using 90 weight oil. My last moto guzzi still had 90 weight gear lube in the transmission. I have had four Moto guzzi motorcycles, I’ve owned one or the other of those for over 40 years. I bought my first one in 1980, I sold my last one in 2021. They all used 90 weight gear lube in the transmission. The pressure on motorcycle gears exceeded 100,000 psi in the late 1980s using one lubrication for the engine and the transmission on some of them are very high power motorcycles available starting in the late 1980s.. The advancement in engine, technology outpaced the advances in oil technology it seems..

I have a 2023 Goldwing DCT Tour with 3,600 miles. I have noticed an irregularity in the shifting that seems to be getting worse. In Econ mode at operating temperature the bike will shift normally with a smooth "click" from 1st through 5fth gears. When shifting to 6th and 7th gear under moderate acceleration maybe at around 2,000 RPMs the bike will shift differently. Instead of a smooth "click", the shift sounds and feels more like a "squeal" or a more pronounced clash. It sounds much like what I would imagine would precede the UBS transmission issue discussed on this video. I discussed this issue with my local dealership where I bought the motorcycle a year ago. They initially suggested it was an engine lugging issue in Econ mode, which I know is not the case since the shift occurs at higher RPMs. I finally took it into the shop and the shop that would only diagnose this issue if I agreed to pay a one-hour diagnostic fee which I agreed to pay to possibly prevent a catastrophic failure or safety issue of the nature discussed on this video. I also had my sales person personally ride the bike who verified he heard the same sound. The dealer initially said they could not find anything wrong, but would continue to look, and the issue has not been resolved as of this date. My question to other riders is, "have any of you experienced this issue? If so, do you consider it to be normal? I would appreciate hearing from other Goldwing riders in the meantime and will keep you all posted on what Honda has to say about my complaint. I also do not think they should have refused to diagnose the problem unless I agreed to a diagnostic fee for a complaint regarding a new $30K motorcycle.
@ograyenm8 ай бұрын
Update - the dealer, in collaboration with Honda corporate, was able to recreate the problem and they believe the transmission issue is caused by a failed shift motor bearing. I do not know if this is the same problem described in the above video identified as a Universal Bearing Support (UBS) bolt failure, or a new issue. A case has been established and they will proceed to tear into the problem to confirm the initial finding and replace one or more shift motor bearings supposedly under warranty. I will continue to update the forum when additional information becomes available.

I had one transmission locked up in my life. I can tell you that that is a helpless feeling when your engine locks because your transmission is locked in destruction, and pulling the clutch and does not save you. The clutch only disconnect the engine from the transmission. It does not disconnect the transmission from the rear wheel, and when the transmission stopped spinning, so does the rear wheel.. The black fishtail skidmarks from the motorcycle I was riding we’re on the road that entire summer. It dragged my relatively new Pirelli phantom tire down to the courts. I was doing about 60. On my way to work on my Yamaha RZ 350. I was behind commuter traffic on back roads on my route to work. As soon as we reached a four-lane section, I pulled out to pass. One of the gears seized on the main shaft, when I split the cases there were seven completely destroyed gears. It’s hard to believe that the teeth were broken off of the gears. The failure was my fault. I unknowingly was running the transmission Almost a full quart low on oil. I was used to the RDs and the TZ Yamaha gearbox, taking one point one quarts of oil. I did not realize that the RZ transmission held much more oil than the RD/TZ transmission.. I don’t know how many gold wings crashed, but I cannot believe there were not a lot of them that went down with the rear wheel, locked, and pulling the clutch in what does not free up the rear wheel to rotate. You are a passenger on a motorcycle with a locked rear wheel until that bike comes to a stop. This story is one of the reasons I do not own a Goldwing anymore. I heard of the clutch burning out on the 2018 and newer models. But I never heard about these transmission failures… I have heard of many motorcycles, having second gear failures, but the only thing that happens in those cases 99 out of 100 times it is, you just don’t have second gear anymore. But hearing about transmission, complete destruction, that is life-threatening. I would not even consider riding a motorcycle with a history of transmission self-destruction.. two of my riding acquaintances traded in their 2014 and 15 twin gold wings in on 2018 Gold wings when they came out, these two guys drink, the Kool-Aid, their garage walls were covered with gold wing, posters and paraphernalia, they had a travel trailer like a horse trailer, but it was for their gold wings, which they would travel the country to different Goldwing gatherings.. after they traded in there gold wings in on the 18 models. Two months later, they traded those 18 models in on leftover 17s. They did not like how small the Goldwing had become and their wives did not like the smaller luggage and the smaller riding area for the passenger. .. they just didn’t like the new model as much as the older generation, like the one I had are used to be a motorcycle mechanic in three different dealerships, I do all my own work, but I did not like doing routine maintenance on my Goldwing.. there were very few easy jobs like changing the air filter, six hours, removing the rear shock to upgrade the spring, it took me over nine hours to complete that job following the Honda, 2 inch stick service manual. my Goldwing was perfect, smooth, good handling, excellent brakes. But I went back to a Yamaha venture because of the simplicity. I made a video that is on my channel comparing my experience with my Goldwing and my Yamaha royal star venture. The Goldwing is smoother and more refined and handles better, but my Goldwing will go just as many miles, Get 35% better gas mileage, is roomier, especially for the driver, and I don’t have to marry the dealer for service.. The Goldwing is the top of the heap, they are perfect, but they have become too complex.. this could be why motorcycle sales have been dropping overall. Like cars, motorcycles have become. Ultra complex

And that's the scary thing... there's just no telling what will happen in a failure like this! And the best thing to do as soon as a hint off a problem occurs, is be prepared for a wheel lockup. Keep the straightest line you can, on the best surface you can, slide back sit up and get on the front brake as hard as the physics will allow!! Trying to shift could make things worse, for complex reasons using the rear brake could also be a problem, instinct will probably see most use it but mindfulness of the fact a light touch could initiate a lockup, is important. The concern you have is valid, as your proposed scenario is potentially an outcome we may see. I have no familiarity with this particular model at all, as I have be out of the loop since retiring 16yrs ago.

I have never seen a more uncomfortable bike….especially the seat. Granted the new one has some good things going for it but they still don’t outweigh the bad. Besides the seat my other major complaints are loss of a gallon of fuel and larger turn radius. Supposedly better fuel economy offsets less gas. In the real world instead of tanking up at 180-200 miles, I now look for fuel around 150 miles.

The '18 and up warranty is not as good especially on electronics. If failures aren't covered by Honda, they will probably say it was something you did or something you failed to do that caused the failure. Just recently bought some Honda oil filters. China made.

What’s the situation if this bolt fails when the bike is out of warranty ?
@BryanC-h1j8 ай бұрын
As the not so proud owner of a new 2023 wing with the 6 speed manual transmission I have a question. If the tranny bolt fails at 70 mph is the rear wheel going to lock solid or is the slipper clutch gonna allow the rear wheel to keep rolling?

Can someone tell me which Goldwing to buy, as someone who has never owned one, and not wanting one of the recalled ones with critical bolt failures and heavy repair work? I was leaning towards an FJR1300, but they have critical exploding transmissions.
@johnrynders61164 ай бұрын
Yamaha recalled and replaced 2nd gear on all bikes that may be affected, despite only a couple of documented failures. I have an FJR and was considering a GL1800 as I'm doing more long distance touring now. Guess I'll keep the FJR for now.
@Jodyrides9 ай бұрын
I am in disbelief. On my KZbin channel, I compared my experiences with my GL 1800 Goldwing with my Yamaha royal star venture which is a 2008 model. I went back to a venture after owning my GL 1800 Goldwing, because I found the Goldwing to be boring., A bit of a gas hog getting only 33 miles per gallon, and. The main reason I got rid of it was because of how extremely difficult, more than any other vehicle I ever owned. It was to do simple maintenance on just about any other motorcycle. Like changing the air cleaner, or upgrading the rear shocks spring, and the fork springs. The forks weren’t a problem, but it took seven hours following the Honda service manual to remove the rear shock to replace the spring and then reinstall the shock. After just those two jobs, which on my royal star venture, was about a 20 minute job to replace both air cleaners on my Venture, and to remove the rear shock, which I did twice now to change the oil in the shock, which was a piece of cake, those jobs changing the air filters, and removing/installing the rear shock, less than two hours on the royal star venture I have, which happens to be my third, Venture since 1986.. as bored as I was, and as concerned as I was about doing any further repairs on the Goldwing, because of how buried everything is in plastic, I always thought it was a perfect motorcycle. I see that in my video on KZbin, I went back to a venture, but, the goldwing i bought will admit, was perfect, and they are. I did have an issue on my GL 1800 with the four-way flashers sticking on and not being able to get them to turn off which turned out to be such a widespread problem, that even ebay used four-way flasher modules are generally sold out when salvage yards put them on eBay, and used, they cost anywhere from $250-$500. They don’t fail, they just turn on and start flashing , and then you can’t get them to turn off. The button sticks on… but I really don’t consider that an issue to worry about, I just would never use the four-way flashers again on my Goldwing.. Now I have heard of the man who burned out his clutch in his new model of gold wing, because he was practicing slow parking lot maneuvers and burned out the clutch. Honda did replace the first one even though, as everyone knows, a clutch like tires, bulbs, brakes, is a consumable item and not covered under warranty. But Honda did replace his problematic clutch the first time, but not the second time. I have an acquaintance that is a full-blown Goldwing fanatic. He has a large trailer which happens to be as large as a horse trailer, with tools and straps, and lighting inside all Goldwing themed. Now he has been a lifelong gold wing fanatic that pulls his trailer to the Goldwing functions at certain places around the country. I’m sure at this moment he is either at Daytona, 2024. We’re on his way with his Goldwing and his riding buddies Goldwing also. The reason I bring this up is because, he and his riding buddy traded in their 2014 gold wings in on brand new 2018 gold wings as soon as they came out in 2018. After a few months, the wives complained about the lack of space on the backseat and the smaller luggage and not as comfortable as the older Goldwing was. So he and his buddy both traded in their 2018 gold wings, on left over 2017… I don’t know if they had that special transmission that was rumored to have issues. But I know he took a loss but he didn’t care he one of the old style Goldwing and 2017 was the last year for that version which he liked best… I found this out from him when I bought his stock vented windshield off of his 2017 and put it on my GL 1800, because he replaced the stock windshield with a particular aftermarket windshield. He likes a bit more… I really am surprised. Did goldwing buyer?? have a problem with their flagship motorcycle. I was a motorcycle mechanic at three different motorcycle dealers, two of them were Honda dealerships. So I do all my own work, but it is so arduous to work on a Goldwing with all of that plastic, that I just didn’t wanna do that again after changing the suspension and the air cleaner alone which took me five hours to do the first time… by the way, if you put 100,000 miles on A 2014 gold wing or anyone of that generation Goldwing. And you have the dealer do the air cleaner change, that means you would have the air filter changed 10 times in 100,000 miles… that will cost the owner over $6000 just in labor charges to change the air filter 10 times in 100,000 miles.. I have a video on KZbin of my yellow gold wing, taken apart to get out the air cleaner under my other screen name. But the title of the video is.” goldwing made mouseproof” that is my yellow gold wing in that video that I am showing people how I made my Goldwing mouse proof, because when I opened that machine up to change the air filter, I found that a mouse or mice had decided to move into the air cleaner housing, which is not uncommon.. I had mice bedding inside the air cleaner of my Yamaha RZ 350, I had actual living mice hopping out of my buddies or 100/7 BMW when he pulled into my driveway one day. He lived about 3 miles away, and when he got to my house, the mice had had enough of that motion and noise, so when the bike stopped, the mice hopped out and headed for the hills… I also found a lot of mice debris like tiny nut shells and an actual snake skin inside the air cleaner housing of my SAAB 900S.. so, if I still owned my previous generation Goldwing to the current one, I would suggest to anyone that owns one to Watch that video I have on KZbin on how to miles proof the air cleaner. Because if they make your motorcycle there, home, they can chew into the wiring. and there is quite a Birdsnest of wiring just above the air cleaner housing on those gold wings.. we’re any of the Goldwing honors who’s engines locked up injured? I have had two transmission lock ups in my life. they are pretty terrifying, because pulling the clutch in does not release the rear wheel to free wheel while you Coast to a stop. Once the transmission locks up, pulling the clutch and will not release that rear wheel to rotate. The clutch is just between the engine and transmission. Anything after the clutch that locks up will lock up the rear wheel and it will stay locked up… On the two lock ups, I had , The rear wheel both times stayed locked until I stopped. On the one machine, an RZ 350., The Skidmore going uphill that I left with the locked rear tire was over 130 feet long. It stayed on the ground all that summer., The bike wanted to come around sideways, but I somehow was able to keep it going straight while the backend was snaking left to right.. both of the machines I had transmission lock ups on were under 400 pounds. I can’t imagine having the rear wheel lock up on a 850 pound motorcycle like a Goldwing… As a matter of fact, I would definitely get rid of any motorcycle that has a history of transmission lock ups, even if my motorcycle wasn’t one of them.. Hey transmission, lock up can be fatal. It is completely different from an engine lock up, because pulling the clutch and will release the rear wheel the rotate.. Is there any word on the final model year for the Goldwing that was announced about six months ago due to eat you emissions standards that the Goldwing cannot meet for the future? I would possibly like to put in my order to have one of the final year Goldwings, Just as an investment

The Venture lost out to the Goldwing 1200 in the 80’s.According to Traxxion Dynamics an air filter with 70000 was still serviceable on the new wing.I’m sure a Honda dealer will allow a 1000 dollar part exchange against a 32000 Wing.The new wing is brilliant get over it! Just replaced the vacuum actuated fuel petcock on my 2008 Shadow that had a recall on it... who knows when the recall was issued. The original owner didn't know. So he sold it to me when his bike mysteriously wouldn't crank right after just cranking fine. I figured it out though when it started acting flakey on me and would no longer pass fuel through it even when in on position. I looked in the fuel line and it was bone dry and I was like, what the sam hill is this nonsense. If a seller ever asks you if you know how to work on motorcycles, be suspicious. In retrospect, I'm like... aha. I can tell you on my Shadow, I was swearing and cursing at the person who designed the tool box and battery box compartment... a complete bonehead. The worst job ever.
