So essentially you're holding your impact position post impact for as long as possible in the follow through to keep the club face square to the path as opposed to flipping and closing the face to the path, makes perfect sense. Reminds me of the square to square swing. I've been trying this out with really good results i must say, to me i focus on having a blocking action(feel) with good rotation on the follow through, hitting good solid on target shots and no pulls or slices, Ben's right it's hard to hit it left with this follow through. Great video Eric.

Golfers spend a lot time trying to look at a video to fix their swing. You have the magic answer on this video. Eric, I gotta tell you I watched this video today and another swing video where you talked about the wrist cocking down on the take away. I decided to try it at the course. This is the piece of the swing I’ve been trying understand what I should be feeling and doing. I usually shoot 8-9 over. Today I shot 3 over just because of me executing the move. My ball flight was perfect. I was fading the ball all year and couldn’t figure it out. Today beautiful draws. Along with gaining my distance back. Thanks for sharing this video it helped me a ton. I dont want to swear but u are a f*&^%^g legend with this one!!! Ben just explained exactly what i have been doing wrong my entire life. i've been releasing my right arm completely wrong with my driver. this has turned me into a new human!!! i went from spraying it 250 with a duct hook and a push slice to smashing it 270-280 dead straight or a baby fade in 3 days. i can't even explain how much better my balance got just from releasing the club right. idk why i could never translate my iron swing to my driver but clearly this was it. i was able to release the club subconsciously with my iron without know it. now my irons are just out of control. i gained 5-10 yard with each club after now consciously being able to release my irons. @CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes. MORE supination would be good for those who miss too far to the right (for a right handed golfer). Here this video you can see we mentioned this is more for players who miss left and want to eliminate left (for right handed golfer.) There will alway be supination. No matter what. Add MORE if you need the ball to go more left, add LESS if you need it to go less left.

I think one of the most confusing things about the release in golf is whether to use wrist flexion and extension or radial and ulnar deviation. Or a combination of all of them. I find ulnar/radial deviation to make my swing flippy and inconsistent. I’m working on building my swing where my only conscious right wrist movements are extension on the backswing and flexion way after impact. This video feels very much like what I’m trying to accomplish. Is there anything wrong with trying to eliminate conscious ulnar and radial deviation in the swing?
@CogornoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jae! Of course the KEY words in here are "conscious". Every swing has radial on way back and ulnar on way down. Every one to varying degrees. Cannot get rid of it. BUT....do you need to THINK about it? Of course not.....depending on what you currently do. There will be ulnar, supination and wrist going from flat/flexed toward extension in late downswing for all players (to varying degrees depending on grip, swing direction ,body orientations, etc. I can help much more if I could see your swing on video

@pelligolf23955 жыл бұрын
Victor Chan thanks for watching. I would say neither a push or pull. It’s an active pressing out (ulnar deviation) of the lead wrist. To limit the curve you need to add the pivot aspect to keep the club moving left. Good observation.

I naturally don't roll the club, but with my irons, I struggle with hitting them straight right. So, I will attempt to more aggressively release my left wrist through impact. Hopefully, I can sort it out that way.

Thanks for the message Oliver... Yes, that may help. I would also ensure you have a strong enough grip and your wrist conditions (not cupped with left wrist) during backswing and initial downswing Then you can add lead arm supination as needed. I’ve always instinctively released like this with a very strong grip and I hit it very straight but I sometimes wonder if I’m leaking speed by not having that left arm supination after impact that you talk about in other release videos, where you get more of a whip through the ball. If I were to video my swing while trying to keep my left arm on top of my right that deep into the follow through, wouldn’t I see the clubhead AND my left elbow exit at the same time (e.g. chicken wing)? The down swing happens so fast, even for slower swing speeds, that it seems like it would be extremely difficult to obtain the proper finish. Always love your videos. Keep trying to educate us.

Thanks for the message and feedback! I do not think that would be a chicken wing (all depends on how someone defines that) I would say a chicken wing would be the elbows getting FARTHER apart during the impact phase......which is not what is happening. Elbows would be getting closer together (or maintaining distance)....just with right arm below left. Of course at some point in the follow through the right will go above, this is mostly just impact phase.

Hey Gary! Good question as I have done a bunch of videos tailored to release and different types. I think the best overall recaps on release would be below. The release style really really really depends on grip and clubface. There are certainly other factors (pivot, swing direction, etc) as well check this video out for my detailed info on release: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnTKY4Jultmgj7s That best way to release video would be more tailored to someone with a weaker grip or more open face. @CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes...as with all things it all depends on the current players pattern. As you can hear/see in this video we mentioned this is great for players to miss to the LEFT and struggle with hooks/pull hooks. In the supination videos you will notice I mention several times that this is for players who have a club face to open. So each one is good....just for different players. Thats where a good coach comes in which I would recommend for everyone!

Basically he teaches a straight release not a roll release. I agree with what he says. Much more predictable and less timing. Roll release guys like Mickelson are hot and cold (he is one of the best in the world so more hot). Mike Malaska is a big proponent of the straight release. I love his stuff. Without the timing of the roll, a straight release guy can get it in the slot and hit it as hard as he wants.

Ben Hogans hips were wide open before the clubhead came near the back of the ball. He squared the clubhead by body rotation. He did not consciously release his right arm. He held on to the club with his right hand and he let the deceleration of his arms (kinematic chain) accelerate the club, wrists being free swinging hinges. The entire DS is less than 1/4 second. From P6(club parallel with the ground in DS) to impact is a fraction of that 1/4 second. There is no human who can know where their hands and arms are in space in real time from start of DS to impact, let alone control arm or hand release. It happens when we let the kinematic sequence happen with wrists being free swinging hinges.

The DS takes less than 1/4 second and impact is 5, 10,000th of a second. No one can actively unhinge the wrists at impact or release left hand . not humanly possible. There is time at top of BS for one thought before impact. One intention. As long as all five levers in a common plane(unique for every golfers body...caddies view is irrelevant) The left arm will be above right arm , when all five levers are in a common plane (Ben Hogan called it the SLOT) The deceleration of the hands in DS(kinematic sequence) is the reason the clubhead accelerates. not active , conscious release of hands or wrists. Its the body turn that squares the clubface.

@@CogornoGolf Please dont take me word . Check it out. It is impossible for any human to know where our hands or arms are in space, in real tme during the 1/4 second it takes for the DS. Therefore it is impossible to know when to "release" any body part during that brief time period, let alone fine tune it to square the clubface during 5, 10,000 second for impact. Its not humanly possible. My instructor first researched what is possible for humans to accomplish. ie motor cortex in co ordination with body parts. Notice the time delay when you touch a hot stove element? Pain sensors happen much quicker than normal reaction time. Our eyes dont SEE in real time. There is a tiny time delay from light hitting our retina to signal to the brain ; then image appears in our awareness. After all we are only, human.

This teaching goes against everything that is being taught.. Throw your right hand for more power. This is the problem with golf, everyone tells you their method is better, no wonder golfers are getting worse not better, oh and by the way, with the amount of videos on take away transition and follow through, this is not including grip, posture, alignment, how can golf be fun. I see it everytime I play golf, the golfer stands over the ball, with a multitude of swing thoughts and has no idea what they are doing. Eric you seem like you want to help golfers become better, let's face it there is a lot of money to be made here but if you really want to increase the numbers into golf and grow the game and lower scores whilst enjoying the game then stop filling everyone's head full of crap and work on simplifying the method and become a real teacher by showing the masses how to use natural talent.

John (and Eric) Laying in bed a week post op from back surgery had me reading more comments than usual.... John, Think about the golf swing...what part of it is “natural”? Swinging a club from somewhere behind the ball towards the target is about all that people do correct initially. Beyond that the swing is an ATHLETIC endeavor with hundreds of movements to be coordinated by the body’s 650+ muscles . (It takes 13 muscles just to scribble notes about from these videos on a piece of paper!). Look at the top 1%...the tour guys. They do it with supreme ease, But what else do they do well? Many were good athletes in whatever sport they play/played. Watch Phil flip a football into the stands on 16 @WM. Ricky raced dirt bikes at a high level, Jack played football and basketball, DJ is an athletic freak. Hale Irwin great cornerback at CU. And so on and so on...so to make the “work on simplifying the method “ comment makes no sense when you realize the great golfers do a lot of athletic things great. Athletic ability should, for the rest of us, be labeled athletic LIMITATIONS. Eric DOES have vid all the way down to basic grip and set up. But most viewing his channel are seeking help beyond that. (Though many might do well to look there for what ails their game😉) At my best I was a 5 handicap on the books playing intramural golf in the USAF. No instruction. Never worked on short game. Just played a lot. I also played football and basketball. I was a sprinter in HS. Sports came naturally Now 30 years later I got my son to routinely shoot 80 by age 11. But he plateaued. I was out of golf knowledge to take him to the next level. On his own and with a ton of viewing Eric’s channel (and HOURS from 30 yards and in and on the green) he’s really improving. He now has a coach to every now and then take a look. He’s now playing off a 4 from the men’s tees. He finds these videos priceless. I throw my son in this because he also is ridiculously good shooting a basketball though never played much. We go to the YMCA to workout and just goofing around beats the guys playing horse. He can see and feel shooting a ball like he does driving in a low 58 deg wedge. My lowest knockdown 56 is a moonball in comparison. His ability..my limitation... It’s just not necessary to slam a guy who imo has the best instruction on KZbin for not teaching a swing that will work for the masses. That’s a good ol’ snake oil salesmen that claims that.. (the closest swing I can think of that might work for many would be Steve Stricker) Eric makes it clear and concise, then more importantly says things like “practice that move 200 times so you get the feel”. Eric, you rock. Thanks for the amazing help you’ve given my son. We’ll be watching your next post!

@@Sdschnaible every single part of the golf swing is natural.. Did anyone teach you how to throw a ball, did anyone teach Homo Sapien how to throw a spear, we would not exist if they did. Look up Ron Sisson for his take on natural ability, we all have it Devon it is wired in our DNA, if golfers were to focus externally ie what the clubhead was doing and not on body parts, then there would be rapid improvement in this great game..
@Sdschnaible4 жыл бұрын
John Bosco throwing a spear is a stretch of a comparison. But to compare...the best spear throwers were naturally more athletic and natural selection determined they survived. If you had mediocre spear throwing skills, maybe you survived but we’re short and of smaller body mass. If you totally sucked at it then you were dinner for a T-RexThe golf swing- some swing it naturally quite well. They likely also do other things quite well as I posted. The lesser gifted individuals do it, well less good to throw in some bad grammar. (And thankfully it doesn’t mean they are weeded out of the gene pool). It does mean they turn to guys like Eric for help. I’d go as far as to say that the golf swing is anything but natural. If you related to throwing a spear, spear throwing was essential for survival. A good golf swing not so much. The understanding from kinesiology and physics standpoint is not intuitive, nor is there a single best way. Just as in throwing a spear, I throw sidearmed like Randy Johnson, you come over the top like Roger Clemens. Both get the job done but the throwing motion is based upon limb length, flexibility, number of fast twitch muscles, etc. There is no one universal swing that focuses on the clubhead. If there is, put it out there in a teachable format andyou would be worth more than Jeff Bezos.
@johnbosco94934 жыл бұрын
@@Sdschnaible I think you missed the point entirely, the analogies I voted such as throwing a spear are metaphorical to give the example of how the GOLFSWING MOTION is wired in our DNA, so I'd skipping a rock, did anyone teach you to do that by showing you what body parts you needed to use? To answer you in regards to focusing on the clubhead rather than body parts, the new paradigm of teaching is exactly that, it is externally focused rather than internally focused. This form of teaching was tested and proven to be 33 percent more effective, at the end of the day Devon if your happy learning like that then go hard, me I'm improving rapidly by external focus..We are all golfers and we are all looking for a magic bullet, subconsciously whatever you believe will be you panacea..

The right arm doesn't work this way in a proper swing. It extends downwards through the ball, and a release is always nonexistent in players trying to square the clubface. No one can hit the ball dead straight, so trying to square the clubface is just not intelligent. The ball will always curve, so learning to control said curvature is key to good striking, which will create a good release.

@@Andyvg99 I'm saying it's incorrect, as far as a release is concerned. The right arm extends downwards, into and through the ball. If the right arm were to be held off as explained, 1. You'd slice everything and 2. Contact on an iron would always be thin at best. As far as release goes, the hands don't "turn over" but are used to strike the ball downward, which naturally creates release if you're hitting though the ball.
