Great discussion. My observation working at a course as a starter / marshal is most recreational golfers devote very little time to practicing their short game with the premium urethane cover balls they play with because they lack the opportunity to practice that way. My short game only improved when I was able to play solo practice rounds during lack periods or going out with a couple dozen Pro VIs and hitting short shots to the greens while waiting for the last group out to finish their rounds. The more different types of shots I practiced the better I was able to visualize the possibilities and have enough confidence to try and pull off the shot when playing rounds for score. The irony where I worked was there was a very nice short game practice area behind the driving range but only 5% of the most highly motivated ( to improve) players used it.

I like how @43:00 Parker didnt name check Phil Mickelsons short game secrets where he famously said ball forward or ball back to decide which shot you want. I watched that video too and tried the flop shots and there was SO much turf interaction. He also said incorrectly that hinge and hold is the only way. What Parker says totally makes sense that with short game theres so many different ways to skin a cat and so much of it is lie dependent. I've seen huge gains by a few SGC set up videos and an old Azinger video here or there.

The different conditions around the green and the modern ball compared to years ago explains why today's player's short game techniques look and are different to great short game players in the past. I noticed differences but what Parker says about technique evolving to suit the new conditions makes complete sense. That is not something I had considered but the use of launch monitors and tour players experimenting will lead to modifications of technique.

What kind of wedge balance would be appropriate for this? I was taught the steeper attack, and have 12° bounces on all my wedges. Not a whole lot of room to open the face and come in shallow.

Not sure how much you’ve actually seen Seve…He had the best Shortgame. He was chipping with bounce and floating in chip shots before it was fashionable. He didn’t just drive them In. He was a genius. Journeymen pros today who can chip are not in his league! Spieth is good in fairness

Great interview, unfortunately not everyone plays on high end courses with tightly mown run off and chipping areas...Parker is obviously not coaching short game to people that are playing municipal/average golf courses. There is plenty of shaggy soft turf out there if your not playing at Country Clubs or high end facilities.

IF you look at some of his videos, he is definitely NOT advocating the low bounce wedges for most amateurs. In fact, I saw him doing a blind wedge test wth a low handicapper, and Parker and the player agreed that higher bounce wedges in the 10-12 degree range were the most appropriate. Guys like Spieth are using 4-6 degree bounce wedges.
