Just watched this again after about half a dozen flights on my Universal 1.1 and got a lot more from it than when i first watched as a complete novice. I think I'll be back at the end of the summer to check-in again. I can't compare it with any other wing, but i agree with your comments about it's rapid ascent rate at take-off and really comfortable stable handling for a beginner with the trims in or just a quarter out. I haven't yet removed the safety blocks on the trim tabs and gone into full 'race mode' - maybe soon...

Hello DHT, I'm glad it's helped. I suppose because I've flown so many types of wings, taken wings to the limit, I'm able to just feel for the subtle differences. I like the details of a wing and try and understand the reasons why, to help others, that kind of what my channel is all about. Helping others. Get those trimmers unlocked, you'll find a whole new wing in there 😁.

Great review and solid info for a popular wing. I'm sure lots more folks are going to see this video. Things I have heard about the Universal as a beginner wing. Overall great, safe, well built and allows a pilot to progress as well as get some speed for doing cross countries. It is never fun to be the slowest in a group. Downsides are it is more difficult to learn how to kite the Universal. Many beginner wings come up and don't have a tendency to overshoot. The Universal does readily overshoot so beginners can often take twice as long to learn how to kite the wing properly. Until they are proficient there is a greater risk of dropping the lines in the motor on launch. Secondly I've heard it isn't difficult to establish a dangerous forward/back oscillation with poor throttle control. This is the more difficult of the two types of oscillations for the instructor to counteract both from a timing perspective and the difficult to visually judge the swing position. All wings have their strengths and weaknesses. I went with the universal but always want to know as much about equipment as possible. Raising these points for discussion I am at the early stage of learning ppg.
@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 4 жыл бұрын
I would disagree on the ground handling. Its really not that difficult to ground handle. Ideally for beginners they need to be able to handle a simple wing like this, as the skills will form the foundation of their skill base for later on. When they move to more advanced wings these skills will be essential. I look back to my PG days and wings that didn't sit above your head was the norm, wings have become almost too easy to fly and give a false sense when move to hotter wings. I agree with the oscillations, but being a bit deeper in the brakes helps, its all technique. I hope your PPG journey is going well.

I have never ever seen anyone complain about uni overshooting, more so the opposite, that it hangs back(thats why most launch it on 3-6cm on the trimmers). Ive never experienced the pitch oscillations from fumbling with the throttle either.

@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 5 жыл бұрын
HI Harry, Ozone make very easy to launch wings. Dudek make well balanced flying wings. It's all down to technique, basic day one technique. The Uni1. 1 just needs the right A riser application. I found it easy to launch but then I'm also used to the Hadron XX which is a little bit fickle. I've always said, if they can make a Dudek launch like an Ozone, Dudek would be the only wing I would fly. Its just technique. Hope that helps.

Hey GF 22. Ive been flying a bigger ENB wing for a while now and instead of moving up a class I was thinking moving down in size. I'm flying a 25M and that's my weight range. I want to get the 23M universal 1.1 even though I weigh more. I feel like I will increase the performance of the wing, increase the speed, decrease the efficiency and obviously flying over the weight range you are no longer flying in the certificated range so safety is less. But what is your take on making the next wing the same wing just down in size?
@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 4 жыл бұрын
My answer is stay within the weight range, it's there for a reason. Wings handle drastically differently when pushed over their designed ranges. If you want more performance, then choose a wing that will give you that performance within the weight range. Going overweight is not the answer. I'm flying a Hadron XX 22 in the middle of the weight range and I still leave everyone behind.

The main difference bet the ReportAir and the Universal is the handling. Although the ReportAir has the reflex profile permanently in. The Uni trim system brings it I as the trimmers are let out. Thanks for this review as I am really keen for this to be my first wing. Currently in training. I have a question about wing loading. You said you were 5kg's under the max load for the wing. Is this something you are comfortable with? I'm a big guy. All dressed up i'm an easy 130kg. Looking to use a maverick so looking around the 160kg mark all geared with fuel, ready to fly. This would give 10kg margin on the 31meter version of the wing (if i've read the chart right). Just checking my thinking is ok as i have seen comments that you need to me in the middle of the range.

Golf Foxtrot 22, someone told me that “neutral” was when tops of all 4 risers sit at the same height. At 0cm the D’s are lower than the A’s. At 6cm they’re all about the same and any more trimmed out the D’s will sit higher than the A’s. 0cm is the EN certified setting, but even then there’s still a little reflex in the centre of the wing.

@GolfFoxtrot22 4 жыл бұрын
It terms of all round capability, the Uni is better. Its a paraglider wing at one setting and a reflex wing in other settings. The ozone wings now days are so easy to launch, they are almost too easy for a student who would then progress to a more advanced wing would then struggle as they don't have the required feel. Its a good time to be flying any of the modern wings. If its a good solid, general and XC wing you are after the Uni will beat the other 2 hands down. If you want a little bit more agility, the Spyder 3 would be better, but not by much.

Thank you. It does! I'm sticking with the universal. I guess my only concern is the danger of forgetting and using the brakes when trimmed out. I'll just have to be ever cautious.

I fly the 25.5 @ 117kg all up and my speeds are 37kmph (23mph) 53kmph (33mph) with 8 liters with a full tank extra 4 liters I gain 1 mph on top of that. If I fly with 4 liters or less drop 1 mph off those speeds. I have 200+ hours on Universal and Universal 1.1. I have had other wings and currently have a 22M Falcon. Not using speed bar just on trimmed out, although not as efficient, the Universal is as Fast as my Falcon. I will always have a Universal in my quiver.

Thank you for the feedback. Are your speeds, accurate air speeds or GPS speeds with wind compensation. I'm guessing your extra weight will increase the wings speed slightly which would make sense. Like you, I have a few wing to choose from, I just wanted to experience this one and now I know why so many like it.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 I do use GPS and test with wind speeds. Also distance covered averages. I have also checked NIL wind (I know there is rarley true Nil) in mornings near the ground and circles to test it. I am hoping to get a flymaster probe before next flying season so I dont have to fly circles and all that all that

Yo Dog, I have the original Universal and it's the only thing I've been flying since 2016. I want to keep my Universal as a backup when I get something hotter. Is there is an appreciable difference in the 1.1 and the original?
@dogofwisdom7945
@dogofwisdom7945 5 жыл бұрын
@@stemtosternms4438 Yes, It is a lighter material and I think the new wing is cut with new laser tech. The 25.5 is 10% Lighter (about 1.5 lbs) I flew them back to back and There was a noticeable difference in launch and just a little different feeling in the air. My original only had about 30 hours on it so it wasn't like I was comparing an old wing to a new one.
@stemtosternms4438
@stemtosternms4438 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response. 10% is significant, especially in nil wind. I feel like on launch I have to bang it up harder than people on other wings. Which isn't a big deal as long as you check it and don't let it over fly you.

Luvly Jubly Giles ... AND ... my question will be ... "now that you've flown it, would THIS be your choice (rather than a Hadron xx) for doing an Icarus or 400 miles coast to coast, if you were to do it again? ... :-)
@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 5 жыл бұрын
Knowing what I know, they would be very close, but the Hadron XX has the slightly higher speed range. The big difference is that you get the speed without having to have 100 hours and a great level of experience to fly the Uni. Its a win win for a newbie.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 No worries I assumed that you would recognize those words from the self proclaimed best pilot in the world. Additionally, he has numerous world records that he made up himself. Some other ones like getting more sites closed than any other human. My personal favorite is harassing and kicking an owl while in flight, posting it and getting himself arrested. I doubt anybody else is on record for such a stunt. He doesn't talk to much about those but impressive none the less.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 BTW Mitch G does a great job in explaining how reflex wings function. Not that you didn't but his was more of a classroom approach. Dell has a classroom video as well. He is passionate about what he believes, but reality just doesn't back him up. Thanks for posting your excellent video.

this is classic shape paraglider with a bit reflex(calling semi reflex), now try to fly on this wing in turbulent conditions ,and you understand. i mean turbulent not few farts in steady air.
@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 5 жыл бұрын
I'll have to correct you. There is is no such thing as semi reflex, it's either reflex or its not. The Uni goes from as you said classic paraglider but open the trims and it becomes reflexed. I've flown in seriously rough air before on my Hadron XX so I know how it works and I know what rough and thermic air feels like. This was a generic review over a few flights. I'm not sure what point you were trying to make.
