Camping Near Oatman, AZ and Exploring the Desert

After three hard days of driving, we finally reached the warmer temperatures of Arizona, near Oatman and began to shake off the Montana cold, camping on BLM land and exploring on our ebikes. Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Light may have been on a dog collar. My son and his wife purchased red LED lights that attach to their dogs collars when they're camping and out after dark. Their lights are very similar to what you found. The rough roads may have been too much for a first time bike rider. I have seen the video of Linda's misfortune and I know she is in good hands and healing quickly. It won't be long and you'll be back out exploring again! An just a reminder from that great orator we all know and love as Yogi Berra: "when you get to the fork in the road,TAKE IT" be safe and let Linda know we're still prayin her up to make a full recovery!

Funny story....while walking back to our vehicle after a long days hunt, I spotted a fork (the utensil) laying in the road. At a fork ( the Y) in the road. So I call out to Rick that there's a fork in the road and I was going to take it. Which one, he wanted to know, right or left? This comedic exchange went on for awhile until he saw the fork in the fork in the road. I still have that fork somewhere...

I'll say it can freak you out! We camped at Tuttle Creek Campground near Lone Pine last fall. We got there at dusk and after dinner we came outside and it was so incredibly dark that we could barely see our own feet. Looking up, the sky was awash in stars. The next morning I came out to sweeping desert vistas of both Mt. Whitney and miles and miles of open land all the way to Owens Lake. It was overwhelming to try to take in so much of God's creation at once. We felt incredibly small.

Mt.Whitney is incredible, camp at Whitney portal sometime and take a day hike up Whitney. Just think you were at the highest point in the continental US and 100 plus miles away is the lowest (Death Valley) pretty cool.

Hey Guys! Hope Linda I’d doing better. When you are headed back to this area again… let me know… I can tell you lots of things to see and do there. We lived there 43 years.. and my job was being in charge of the maintenance of all those roads including Old 66… I could tell you some stories… I’ve Been over every off road in that entire area… there some cool stuff there to see most people never know about!! I was friends with the Mohave County Historian Roman Malich back in the day and covered so much of that area with him.. if you ge a chance to find some of his books… read them… you will enjoy! One of the electric tricycle companies needs to send Linda a tricycle to try out when she heals. She will be able to go where you go and have a place to put her rock finds so she can haul even more rocks home for you. Man did this video have a bunch of foreshadowing.

There actually are whale bones in a few deserts around the world, because they were inland seas at one time, prior to desertification...Calm before the storm, Linda had the right instincts, sticking to the pavement, could have been a good idea, of course there's cars and trucks usually on the pavement...I installed the 1000 watt Bafang mid drive motor on my mountain bike, and I build them for other people, best bang for your buck if your into that sort of thing..Although those hub motors are simple and easier to drive without thinking, my first couple Ebikes were hub motor bikes...Plus if your chain breaks, the hub motor will still get you home..She got into some trouble alright..Prophetic...Rest and relaxation Linda...

I've been learning a lot about ebikes and am really liking it. I have a mid-drive which is only 250w, but it seems to have almost as much zip as my 750w hub drive. 1,000watts in a mid-drive must be something!

Brings back memories. Back in the 80's I was the flying service tech out of the Phoenix area. Flying out of Falcon Field in Mesa AZ I would visit places like Kayenta, Kingman and Bull Head City. Because of air density I was never very high and always thought if I ever go down they would never find me. However, I now know you and Linda would be there to rescue me :-)

Hello John, technology has come far enough these days that we now have the Garmin InReach in case we end up getting hurt or lost. Cheap satellite communication, compared to what it was before. I remember flying over thick, remote forest in Alaska and thinking that if I went down, no one would ever find me. After that I only followed the rivers, railroads and highways!

I just remembered what I did for our bikes on our rack that is like yours. I used chain and screw together quick links. I wrapped one end around seat post and a quick link. The other end of chain was around handlebar shaft and another quick link there. Then when I pulled the keeper down firm against the chain it was all pulled tight. neighbor across the street made a motorcycle cover by using some kind of glue instead of trying to sew stitch seams. Worked for him. Hope that foot is doing gooder now and that "old cow bell" is not getting wornout. 😃

Linda is being nice and not using the cowbell. When we were sailing, I used to use contact cement to hold a patch on a sail in place while I stitched around the edges. Then I noticed that the contact cement never let go and I gave up on the stitching after that. I wonder if your neighbor was using some sort of contact cement?

Some time ago, I live on a corner lot, at the bottom of my street, and one day, we had a frog strangler of a summer storm in the afternoon. I am looking out my front door, watching a small river flow down the curbed street, when I see a youngster’s tennis shoe, floating down like a little boat and to add the odd part to it, in the sole of the shoe, it had red and green LED lights and they were flashing, so I watched this little boat go past my house, turn out onto the next street and float all the way down the next street, still flashing until it was out of sight.

Thanks for info on ebike stand, so sorry for Linda's injury & glad your on the mend. Was looking forward to cross paths w/ you 2- share a meal & have talk story time. Extended our stay at San Clemente State beach to get over 12day Crud. Fed. Jury Duty accepted my Hardship excuse so we're free to Roam again, we'll be 70 this yr- heard they remove ya from call list at 70- hope so "Going Fishing". Will be on the Colorado Rr for couple wks then home to Lakeside, AZ couple wks. Anxious to start up new Early Cold Climate Garden Seeds w/ my daughter then hoping "Road Trip" Thru Utah, Wy, Co & home where summers are cooler at 7,000ft elev. Hope Linda will consider a ETrike for pavement riding. I Ate it on gravel rd twice, now I wear Elbow & Knee pads- it works- haven't crashed since...lol. Safe Travels & God Bless!

Beautiful scenery! Oatman is a lot of fun! Been around that area a few times over the last 5 decades, but never up that particular wash. Found it on google maps. The realtor is still listed however he has no current listings.... hopefully he has survived the plague. After 19 years of winters in N Idaho wintering somewhere down south looks better and better every year lol so I was just wondering what he's wanting for this property or a piece of it. Such a pretty place. Working for the Yucca Mountain project in Summerlin, NV, I drove up Mount Charleston for some sunset photography. It's nearly a straight shot to US-95 off the base of the mountain. To see where gravity, friction and drag would equalize on 10% grade in a rental Impala, I put the car in neutral and let it coast. At about 70 mph, I passed a burro standing in the opposite lane of Rt. 157, ending my curiosity.

I don't think old route 66 goes through Bullhead City. It does go from around Topock area to Oatman. Last time I was over that stretch of Route 66 there was a light covering of sand over the pavement along some of the old highway.

Have you thought about putting wider handlebars on your bikes. Just from the videos it seems like the narrow handlebars shake from side to side on the bumpy trails. Making it easy to over correct. Just a thought. Sure a pretty spot you found.

I don't know if you know the story about the burros. They are not indigenous to the region. They are from miners that died and/or lost them while mining. The burros got away from them or the miners died and the burro went free and in doing so, they ended up breading and now there are herds of them all over. I've seen them in Nevada, Arizona and in Utah when I was in that area. Wild horse is the same situation and you can find large herds of those too. They look tame but stay away as they certainly are not and it could be dangerous to approach them. You spoke of silver mines, those are mostly further north although there were a few in southern Nevada so possibly Arizona too. Montana had/has a lot of silver mines. I went in a few silver mines in the Polaris Montana area. I found Peacock Ore in a mine in Polaris Montana. It is a beautiful ore. Peacock Ore is the common name for the mineral Chalcopyrite, particularly when the surface has tarnished or oxidized to display beautiful iridescent colors. It is a rainbow of colors and very pretty. I still have a chunk of it on my window sill that I collected there. It came out of a spur of the Polaris Mine which was a gold mine.

One of people I watch had their big generator sitting on the back rack on their travle trailer just strapped down and not going too far but as they was going through town they was hitting every stoplight. At a stop light someone got out and cut the strap and stole it

Have you camped just south of Flagstaff or Sedona? South of Flagstaff on I17 off exit 331....Kelly canyon road. Lots of BLM land...lots of other nomads, but they stay close to the main road.

Hello James, the safest way to charge an ebike battery, so as not to damage it, is to use the AC charger that came with the bike and just plug it in to a suitable sized power station (1000WH+). That being said, there is a way to charge that battery directly from a solar panel by using a voltage adjustable MPPT controller, available on Amazon for around $50. You'll need to do some research on KZbin to see how to do that. Look up "Charging an ebike from solar"

That's gold country. I used to mine for gold in a mine south west of there in Nevada. If you head east of Las Vegas, those mines are lead mines and they minded those during WWII for bullets. In fact they pulled all the miners out of the gold mines to go to the lead mines during the war. All gold mining stopped mining during the war for that reason.

It's been there for years now and has thousands of miles under it, much of it on gravel. I'd have to say it's doing pretty good!
