I dig that they're doing models on sprues with all the extra options. Really makes for good value. I also like Nolzur minis and, while I've come across bendy weapons, they're pretty easy to fix with a little heat (though I've totally cut off a few and customized weapons myself). My only real complaint is with the mold lines. Like you stated, they're definitely harder to clean and end up leaving a good amount of unprimed areas that need to get covered.

You can fix the bendy swords with a little heat, and after heat treatment they even harden. I just use a regular lighter, put the part I want above the flame for about a second, it gets even softer and I just pull it by the tip in the direction I want it to be, it quickly cools down and hardens into position. it is easier to pull it than to "bend" it into position.

I've used boiling water a bunch of times - definitely work's on the WizKids line - I managed to completely re-position a Rakdos wing (large model), swords and arms work nicely too. I like everything about these except the price. Personally I find it’s hard enough to get players to pick up minis to begin with, and I think a lot of people will scoff at a price point that starts at $15, especially when 5e can be played with TotM or with digital tabletops. I do think it’s kind of weird how there’s almost no d&d miniature painting on KZbin. Especially when you consider how many of the landmark terrain youtubers got their start doing d&d terrain.
@the_arcanum3 жыл бұрын
I did too scoff at the price. But let me reassure you: there's plenty of content about painting fantasy minis on the Tube. Channels/painters like Miniac, Ninjon, Mindwinter Minis, Sigmars and about ten other gents and ladies are regularly pushing advanced technical and beginner content on lavis, highlighting, non metallic metals or basing. And i'm not even considering what you can lesrn from the military model hobbyists that publish on KZbin too. Don't wait for the youtube algorithm to recommend you new stuff, do queries !

@@the_arcanum Oh I watch all of those, but none of them base their content in generic fantasy figures. They all focus on the GW product line and intersperse their videos occasionally with other miniatures. @kelimar30143 жыл бұрын
@@mrmaat I think $5 is low, but I'm Canadian, so my $5 probably isn't your $5. I think $10 is pretty reasonable just because of how many options come with the figure. Thats taking into account that regular Wizkids models already cost around $5 here.
@kingbobb0072 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a fair price. Marvel Crisis single figures are around that range, and while larger in scale, they also include pricing for licensing and game design, and don’t come with much in the way of customization options. For $15 retail to get a solid figure that will provide options that become bits when not used is a pretty decent price for this market.
@YanniCooper3 жыл бұрын
One thing that often works for bendy weapons is super familiar to anyone who has a large Reaper Bones collections, but immerse in hot (nearly boiling) water for about 20-40 seconds (longer for larger models) then pull out with a utensil of some kind (hot water is hot) bend to the right shape and immerse in ice water.
@GoobertownHobbies3 жыл бұрын
I'll give it a shot! :-)
@YanniCooper3 жыл бұрын
@@GoobertownHobbies Some plastics will return to their "proper" shape just from being heated, some you'll need to hold back into shape until it cools (hence the ice water). I've also heard of a heatgun working better for some plastic but haven't run into any minis that that was required for in my personal experience. If you do have bent minis, try the hot/cold water method and they rebend after a couple of days it might be worth playing around with a heatgun.

A typical way to fix bent parts on plastic parts is put the piece in really hot (previously boiled) water, bend it in place, then stuff into ice water to freeze it into position. That should work, I tried this for many different molded models. BTW the first miniature model figure I painted was a pewter D&D wizard, it was a logical change from working on scale models like airplanes. It was easier to demonstrate my character's position in the group or in melee. The rest of my group got the models and I offered to paint them. All were happy with the resultant "tools" for the game. Great video! I really like how your hag turned out. Cool minies to! Might have to look for them at my LGS

I saw that some have mentioned heat for fixing up bent weapons. i go with hot water. Then a dip into chilled water that has been in the freezer for awhile. It is something that can be repeated until the mini is fixed.

Great video as ever! The minis are cool and the customisation options seem pretty good. A little pricey for the monsters for the exact reasons you stated in the video. The most promising thing I think I heard in this video was the lack of embargo or NDA. A positive change that the industry as a whole really need to shift towards. Good PR is sorely needed with some of these companies.

Fyi, you can fix any of the bendy swords from the Reaper Bones line or others made from the same material quite easily. Get one container large enough to immerse the mini and your hands as you hold the weapon in its desired shape. Add enough water with some ice cubes without it overflowing once you dunk the mini. Then boil water in a pot large enough to dunk just the mini-please, no hands in boiling water! Hold the mini upside down by the base (use a cooking spoon if you worry about getting scalded) in the boiling water for about 5 seconds or so. Take it out and shake off excess water. Now gently bend the weapon how you'd like it, hold it that way, and dunk it in the ice bath. Hold for 10 seconds. Remove from water and examine it. You may need to boil again and ice bath again. Just remember to be gentle-it could snap if you apply force too quickly. It should want to return to the form it was given by the mold process. Once removed and left to cool, some Bones minis tend to sag, and thus bendy weapons happen. Check the mini again the following day. Sometimes a mini might need a further treatment. But most should be fixed by now. Hope this helps someone!

Thanks! I'll set aside some time to un-noodle these swords :-)

Imo this level of customization is what dnd minis always shouldve had. I felt so restricted before with other dnd minis. I really appreciate these spures. They remind me of the classic space marine commander or the terminator lord kits from gw.

I’ve been using frostgrave and Oathmark minis for my games. It’s nice because they are all made to be relatively interchangeable with all the limbs and parts making customizing minis really easy.

My friends have been planning an Elder Scrolls DnD campaign, and for my Nord warrior I bought a viking axeman from V&V Miniatures, took a few bits from a Gripping Beast Viking Hirdmen box, and need to get some greenstuff to sculpt his Ancient Nord armor. It's a bit of work, but it's getting the look I want in the end that makes it feel worth it.

More options is always good for growing that bitbox! I hope your Nord is everything you imagined :-)

Oh and I TOTALLY am in that population that 3D prints D&D minis. I printed my warlock and my wife's cleric, along with her pets - a starling and a possum - that follow her character around.

@@lukehill9934 3d printing is a lot of fun, I'm using it for one of my games right now. :-)
@lukehill99343 жыл бұрын
@@GoobertownHobbies Yeah I'm subscribed to a few Patreons or similar - The Printing Goes Ever On, One page Rules, and Heroes Infinite - that supply me with STLs I can turn into D&D figures, or use as proxies for my Sisters or Drukhari armies. They also do some that are just too pretty NOT to print and paint up, like the Dark Fairy Tales line of minis that had Snow White and Alice in Wonderland with a big sword and axe that I couldn't NOT print and paint up.

This is cool, when I used to play I made the miniatures with clay and then painted them, it was fun

I feel like painting D&D Minis is tough because as my character's equipment changes, the mini is no longer representative of my character. I usually pick a generic of the class (like these minis you feature) and paint that, then it's in the collection as "The druid" for example.
@GoobertownHobbies2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! it'd be fun to make a new mini for your character every 5 levels or so :-)

Very cool! Depends on the price point for me though, Northstars Frostgrave minis have more options then those currently do. I'm sure with future release though this idea could really take off.

In terms of using sprue minis for D&D, I imagine DMs will get more bang for their buck by tapping into kits with more models. Fantasy and Historical miniatures sets give you a bunch of models and usually a fair selection of customization options. Frostgrave kits are probably the most useful for a DM's purposes, though random human soldiers can be filled out with historicals like from Perry Miniatures. Fireforge Games has a bunch of interesting options, such as some of the only plastic dwarf and elf warrior kits to be found at an affordable price (as well as a kit for armed peasants). Meanwhile, Wargames Atlantic have Skeleton, Goblin, Giant Spider, Lizardfolk, and Halfling kits in their Classic Fantasy range. These are just the options I can think of off the top of my head. DMs have tools at their disposal, if they're willing to look. And since you're buying models "in bulk", you have the parts to kitbash them into new and exciting forms. I've had a mind to grab some Wargames Atlantic skeletons, glue a couple together, and make a custom two-headed, four-armed skeleton monster for D&D.

I think you're absolutely right. There's a lot of great polystyrene minis on the market for DMs who are willing to get crafty and creative. I'm hoping these individual character sprues will help on-ramp some more players into the hobby- fingers crossed! :-)

I started figure painting on D&D miniatures back in 1988 and progressed to figures for numerous other RPG's including HeroQuest and all of it's quest packs and in 10 years I had roughly amassed around 10,000 miniature figures from PC's to large dragons

Having just painted a Wizkids pre-primed D&D model I have to say: They are unpleasant to paint with soft, shallow details. Whenever I decide I'm going to paint a collection of D&D figures for my campaign I hit this wall. I'm hoping these minis will fix this issue and from your review it looks like they did.
@TylerProvick3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I made this comment before I got to the part where you talked about the wizkids stuff.
@Guzwar3 жыл бұрын
Strip the primer off of them and prime them yourself. You can't recover all of the details, but the factory primer is so thick that you'll see details you didn't see before when you remove it.
