Great video what an awesome deal you got. Have fought with the surge on those small engines before could possibly be the governor arm return spring has gotten weak allowing it to over rev so the governors fighting itself or the RPMs are set a little too high out of adjustment could cause surging if I remember right the governor should kick in 3600 RPM if it goes over that the governor will be fighting to keep it under control just a thought.
@rockspowersports2 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. It very well could be a weak governor spring. I’ll get back to it at some point and figure out what’s going on.

I have the same 1987, JD 316. Mine still works like a charm. I was told to look into getting a newer tractor than putting money in my 316. I purchased a X350. Like you said. big difference in gauge of steel. Tires on the X350 are smaller. With both on full throttle. JD 316 has more power.

$600.00 is a steal of a deal! I have a 316 & a 318 with the same accessories. Your mower deck sounds like it could use new bearings. You have one hell of a tractor. In the little amount of snow, it’s hard to tell how well it will work. With a little TLC it will do the job. Good luck!
@jdtractorman74452 ай бұрын
You got a great deal for all those items. Fix that 316 up and it will probably go another 30 years. I have a 318 myself, these tractors were built like tanks and just keep going. I've done a bunch of repairs to mine and added a few accessories. I never plan on selling it.

Great engines and tractor . Easy to work on an those engines are good as the older kohler . I work at a mower shop for years and when I tell yah them ownens engines are bullet proof they will run but the only down fall is when they start leaking oil they start flooding out the oil. But with a good gasket kit and good crank seals they will treat you rite
@rockspowersports2 ай бұрын
It was a little low on oil when I picked it up so it’s either leaking it somewhere or burning it. It doesn’t really seem to smoke though.
@austinchadwick48142 ай бұрын
Sounds like it needs a hydraulic oil filter and new hydro fluid. There’s an adjustment for that trans creeping. Old Onan engines have a two piece intake manifold notorious for sucking air thus a lean condition.

That throttle plate shaft (on the carb) should have a felt gasket or O-ring where it mates with the carb. You have to unscrew the plate and slide out the shaft. I had the same surging issues with both my twin engines. I stuck a small O-ring there and the surging went away for good. Musta been sucking air in behind that throttle shaft.

Clean the carb jets. If it still surges check for intake leaks around intake manifold. Good luck. I just fought one of these p218 this summer for over a month. Now it has a brand new engine in it. The onan parts are expensive and hard to find.
@TNelly8392 ай бұрын
Awesome little lawn tractor you picked up. To be fair you can’t compare the 316 “lawn tractor” to your L100 riding lawn mower. The L100 is a box store mower built cheaply and sold cheaply. The higher end John Deere models like the X500 and X700 series would be a more fair comparison but I agree, old school quality is typically better still.

I bought a 2008 John Deere x540. I got a pretty decent deal on it because the guy before me thought it needed a new carb that was around $500 bucks because it was surging. He didn’t run it anymore also. I picked it up and put a can of Seafoam in the gas tank and started using it. The surge is gone for the most part. It won’t start without a choke though even when warm. Tried to do some research and a lot of ppl are saying that is normal. I’ve been meaning to clean the carb out but not sure if I should mess with it.

One thing to check is the engine compression and valve adjustment on a lot of these older onan engines they will run on very low compression but they will never run just quite right in the top of the rpm range
