With sharp styling inside and out, good fuel economy, and a boat-load of standard safety features, the Nissan Sentra is a compelling compact sedan. If you're shopping for a compact car that won't break the bank, and you don't need the extra power you find in the turbocharged competition, the Sentra should be at the top of your list.

I think the critical thing to remember: the Sentra's low price tag means that it really *doesn't* compete with the 1.5L turbo Civic models, or the 1.6L turbo Elantra or Forte either. The entire Sentra lineup is targeted squarely at the bulk of the segment which are the lower end trims of the competition.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent point, Alex. And it's worth noting that the bulk of sales for almost manufacturers is not from top trim models. Nissan is aiming precisely at budget shoppers where the Sentra looks like a reasonable choice. If I were in the market in this segment I'd opt for the Forte GT or the Jetta GLI but I understand that others have different priorities and constraints in their choices.

This is the exact car I drive, except for the color. When I was looking at vehicles, I took it in comparison with the usual suspects: the Corolla, Civic. What Nissan has going for it here above all is the top-notch redesign of the Sentra model combined with a fairly substantial pricing gap between the other two (on average the Sentra tag price was looking at $2500 less than a Corolla and $3000 less than a Civic). That's a very attractive combination of style and price. Test driving, I could say that the 3 cars were also rather comparable, with the Corolla being best in fuel economy, the Civic being the best in performance overall, while the Sentra fit snuggly in between the two (I guess a fancier way of saying it didn't really do anything to stand out as far as driving it while the other 2 had clear distinctions). What really set the Sentra apart is how cozy and stylish the interior feels. To feel like I'm driving in a comfortable living room in an otherwise standard economy car is very nice. I've been driving it for almost a year and I can say I'm happy with the decision I made while comparing the 3. You'll get a bunch of guys complaining about the CVT engine (they have their issues, but I've driven a fair share of non-CVTs that have gone bad as well for far worse reasons and out of warranty) and how it under-performs in HP compared to the other 2, but realistically who is shopping for vehicles in this range of price/model type that is demanding a sport engine to go with it?

*The Nissan Sentra S, base model with the 7" infotainment screen doesn't come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you'll have to step up the the SV/SR version with the 8" screen to do so.* The 2020 comes with dual pinion electric steering rack that improved a lot from the previous models, a little more weight to it instead of the "floaty" and weightless feeling when turning. Also have added the independent rear suspension that's a plus comparing to the Mazda 3 that stepped back to semi-independent torsion beam because of cost cutting reasons. The full LED headlights looks amazing and it's bright during night time, but do note that some of the competitors like the Mazda 3 have adaptive headlights that'll turn with steering input. But the Mazda 3 also have full LED taillights that looks amazing as well. And the LED fog lights on the Sentra is a nice touch also instead of a lot of the incandescent fog lights that other models like the Civic/Forte like Alex mentioned. In my opinion, this is the best looking vehicle in the compact economy sedan segment, Mazda 3 following next. The infotainment on the Nissan vehicles is just more refined comparing to the Mazda infotainment, in term of integration and stability. I rented both the Nissan and Mazda vehicles and not once did I have a problem connecting to the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in the Nissan, but the Mazda had so many bug/glitches. And on the Mazda 3, the backup camera doesn't expand the whole screen which is disappointing comparing to the available 360 degrees camera that sure is useful in a lot of situations. In terms on driving feels, the Civic/Mazda 3 for sure have an edge over the competition, but with the Sentra being in on the same platform as the Rogue Sport, it adds a level of solidity and refinement to it comparing to the outgoing model. A lot of the manufacturers has gone to CVT transmissions as customers that's shopping for these vehicles are leaning more towards value and comfort over spirited driving. And the DCT that the Korean brands are offering in these economy cars aren't the best either. FYI, the Corolla is by far the worse in this category, I think if consumers do a little more research than blindly following the crowd on reliability reputation of Toyota products, it'll magnify how some of the Toyota products are just ancient and under developed. There is for sure a concern on reliability on the Jatco CVT transmissions, but a lot of people that comment on these videos has not even driven in a newer Nissan vehicle; all I see is keyboard warriors that religiously believe in the videos that Scotty Kilmer put out. Value is a home run for Nissan on the new 2020 Sentra, with full suite of safety features come as standard equipment including the Rear Automatic Braking feature that'll safe a lot of people from rear bumper damages. Available remote start and Nissan Connect features are also a nice touch, enabling you to cool down or heat up the interior prior to going into the vehicle is very important to me, as I live with blazing California sun. Overall, I think Nissan is going into the right directions, hopefully they stabilizes their financial situation and bring back the glory they had during the 80/90's. With the upcoming models like the Rogue, Frontier, Pathfinder, Z, GTR, it should be an interesting couple of years for Nissan.

For me, the biggest concern in this segment is transmission options. The only option for automatic in almost every car is a CVT which still, even a decade after it became widely used, is not a reliable transmission. The small turbo engines also suffer with reliability concerns, even the Honda. If you're just looking to lease for 3yrs then return, reliability doesn't matter, but if you want to buy it and keep it, the Mazda3 is the best combo of driving dynamics, interior quality and long term reliability.

Update: I've now had my new Sentra for two weeks and I've had a chance to give it an initial opinion: Seeing that I bought it sight unseen, and the risks involved there, it IS a fantastic car, but I'm not at all surprised! Try doing that with a GM. I am so pleased with its look, build quality, and driving dynamics. For me, when it comes to the Nissan brand, I am all in. I love the CVT, and love everything that most people don't like about them, like their seamless ratio changes, holding the engine revs to their optimal point, and intuitiveness when it comes to anticipating what ratio to be in for which condition / situation you're in. They are simply the best designed transmission for how one should work- in my opinion. As for the engine, I feel it's a perfect match for the size and weight of the car. The quality of the materials used and their design / fit, is excellent also. This is the best value in this segment, and to me, it's the best looking too. Let's see how it does over time, but if it's anything like my past Nissans, I am confident I will be pleased. I've owned 4 Nissans to date, two with CVTs, and have had zero problems with any of them. I will post back here in a year to give another update.

What a great review. I would like to see if I can rent a Sentra SV. I had pretty much decided on a Kia Forte EX (with a good discount hopefully). One great advantage is the really long warranty that is standard on Kia. I have rented 2020 Corollas and cannot believe how much road noise intrudes on rough pavement freeways. Also, it looks like the infotainment system in the Sentra is quite good and much better than the Corollas. The heating and ventilation controls are maddening in the Corolla - they have 8 or 10 buttons to do the work of 3 or 4. Back to the Sentra, it is amazing that they offer rear autonomous breaking. The Corolla does not even offer rear cross traffic alert nor Android Auto.

Long warranty is good but I've heard that Kia/Hyundai don't honor it many times so what's the point? The 2020 Corolla you rented, was it an SE or XSE? I heard the LE or XLE is the way to go because a lot less road noise. I thought the 2020 Corolla has a temperature knob with digital readout of temperature, how is that difficult?

I would go with the elsntra/forte with the 1.6L turbo , dual clutch automatic, and i.r.s. good luck finding one! otherwise, the Sentra due to new platform, engine, rear suspension ( i.r.s. ) and revised CVT. you can get discounts easily on Sentra. dealers want m.s.r.p. for Forte gt or Elantra sport.

I used to have a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE. I absolutely loved that car! It had some leather and a 5 speed. I like the way the new Sentra looks and the interior is sweet. I just wish Nissan would offer a manual again.

I drive a Civic EX-l and it's a car that gives you the sensation of driving a premium car...powerful and solid. But I got some trouble with the cluster at 10k miles!!! What the heck, I hope it's a random failure and not became a issue later. But overall I love my civic with black leather seats, white pearl, def I would like someday they put a 2.0t without need to be a type R or Si

Looks like you missed the comparison section where we comment that the Corolla has higher predicted reliability. In addition, past reliability has little bearing on a new product as Toyota and Honda have shown with stumbles in their own product lineups. The reality is we have no idea how reliable or unreliable this new Nissan CVT is vs the Toyota CVT in the Corolla which is also new and unproven. Now, if I were a betting man I'd guess that Toyota's going to be more reliable, but that has no basis in fact at this time.
@Mamo878
@Mamo878 4 жыл бұрын
@Hemen Sigh Just because some blowhard says something in the comments section doesn't mean it's true. Nissan has improved the reliability of CVT transmissions in the last 3 years. Where Consumer Reports has enough data points, it has consistently given the 2017+ Nissans their highest reliability rating in the 'Transmission Major' and 'Transmission Minor' categories for CVT equipped models like the Altima, Rogue and Sentra.

Re "2nd Row Headroom" chart. Am I nuts or is your chart inverted? Usually the larger numbers are at the top, like the "Combined Headroom" chart, no? Just a bit confusing at first glance. Great review of a nice cheap car. Went to see one at my local dealer and the salesman drove a 2020 VERSA up and started to tell us all about the "new Sentra." I let him go on for a few minutes before correcting his mistakes. He said, "Ooops." Oh well, he was a FNG.
