The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

Maybe the opposite of zugzwang? You're in Zugzwang when you have to make a move, but every move will worsen your position. This is a move, that does not improve your position, but your opponent now have to find the best refutation or your position becomes much better. I'm just spitballing here.

Nepo is amazing , he has real chances to make it to another WCC because he plays attacking and goes for the win in almost every match, that is the only way to win the candidates, win early and then most of the other challengers will either draw or lose under pressure of the lead from nepo. Fabi is always great in that he is solid and balanced so he also has chances, others are way below carlsen's level, Ding can be a dark horse but he is unlikely to win here because of his inconsistency.

Great video as always, only complain that I have is that you didn't actually consider all of the main threats Nepo had in the position after f4 and just showed refutation of one line, it's much more complicated than that. Nepo was carefully building the tension behind that f4 move and keeping it as a constant threat and if that move was ever to happen and position exploded, it could've gone either way, not to mention the time factor. Fabi knew this as well as Nepo and that's why they both agree not to risk it and they both walked out as the leaders of the tournament.

@@thebeamerdreamer It was a classical game so there shouldn't be increments until the 61st move which I doubt it went that far but I could be wrong. Fabi also plays bad under time pressure from what I seen. He only lost to Magnus last championship only because Fabi was forced to play him in a quicker time format because of all the draws. Fabi for sure played Magnus better than Nepo played Magnus. Typically this is the format in classical games. 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting on move 61.

Caruana wasn't willing to risk it , unfortunate, cause if he had he most likely wins this brilliant game. He should have gone for it, it's only Round 2 he won the 1st Round, there is no reason not to try to extend the lead when you have a good chance, instead of just playing safe and taking draws and waiting till the end where you are forced to win on demand if you're not in first place.

after both being in pole-position nothing else was to be expected seriously, it would just be silly to give away that advantage...

Cool game but mega disappointing that things ended in a draw; in that position either player could have justified fighting on and instead neither did. Maybe more points for a win (e.g. 1.5 for a win and .5 for a draw instead of 1/0.5) would help.

As a 1700 level player, sometimes I just have to admit that some games are way over my head. This is one of them. Yikes!

After Qc6, black plays Rxf7+. Nxf7, Qxf7+, Kh8, and after Bxd5, it looks very drawish because black has to put his queen on 8th rank to avoid a checkmate
