What do Neil Gaiman, Michael Sheen, and Douglas McKinnon all have in common? They love Powell and Pressburger films, particularly A Matter of Life and Death. I’ll show you the clues hidden in that movie that might tell us what to expect in Season 3.

The trial for Crowley's fall would be a great opening scene for season 3

Now I've always thought that season 3 will be Aziraphale's big chance to be there to save Crowley in the nick of time like Crowley has done so repeatedly for him, going against everything he believes in simply to save or get to Crowley and I'm hoping we get the chance to see Aziraphale do his version of the apology dance as a way to put them back on speaking terms.
@hippolytavargas

All of this. I'm not emotionally prepared for a year+ before season 3 and then an actual sacrifice. But I do expect a trial and sacrifice of some sort and hope that includes insight and independence -seeing heaven for what it is, burning it all down? for Aziraphale, (but also Aziraphale doing the Apology Dance). My desire to rewatch Stairway to Heaven is now turning into a Powell and Pressburger film fest, so there's that to pass the time.

Agree with everything that's said except the statement that aziraphale hasn't yet defied what he considers as law. He actually has defied law lots of times. He doesn't believe that heaven is always "good" - that's why he averts Armageddon, saves jobs children, and continues to be close friends with Crowley. I think what he needs to do is let go of his idea of what heaven *Should* or *could* be. The idea that there is this clear separation between good and evil. Good and evil are just 2 sides of the same coin...But he clearly doesn't think that heaven is good now (that's why he wants to improve it), and he doesn't think that all the laws need to be obeyed.

This reminds me of that line from Interstellar: Maybe [love is] some evidence, some artefact of a higher dimension that we can't consciously perceive. I'm drawn across the universe to someone I haven't seen in a decade, who I know is probably dead. Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can't understand it.

I can see a law vs. love theme in Season 3, although (not having seen the movie you are referencing) I see it as more heaven's law (obedience to God's plan) vs. love of things that are not the Almighty. At the end of Season 2 I became very worried for Aziraphale in Season 3. My immediate concern was how Aziraphale would cope when his belief in obedience to the Almighty (and his angelic identity) comes up against his love for the earth and for Crowley. That conflict seems inevitable with the Second Coming project and poor Aziraphale will be forced at some point (maybe multiple points) to make choices between those values of his. Aziraphale took the promotion thinking he can "fix" heaven. Meanwhile Crowley never got the chance to tell him the real reason Gabriel ended up in the bookshop. Aziraphale thinks it is because Gabriel wanted to be with Beelzebub, but the reality is that Gabriel left because he opposed Armageddon Version 2 (the Second Coming?) and was about to get his memory wiped because of that disobedience. Gabriel expected to be cast out for disobedience and figured that way he would end up with Beelzebub. All those years in heaven and the memory wipe plan surprised him and he had to scramble fast to preserve his memories, his identity and love. Aziraphale knows of none of this danger. I can see a plot going either direction, with either Aziraphale or Crowley or both having to make a major sacrifice. At this point in the story, there is no way to save the earth and obey the Almighty (at least according to the Metatron.) Great choices: Obedience to "the Great Plan" (which may not be the Ineffable Plan) or love for a demon or the earth (when organized religion tells us God must come first.) Can't wait to see how Neil Gaiman decides to take the story in Season 3 - I'm sure it will be great and unexpected.

We may see the doing away with angels and demons entirely, with all beings becoming mortal. I do think we'll find out that God was testing not humans, but angels, when She created the universe and people--to see how angels/demons treat lesser beings when given great power over them. I think only A & C passed the test.

I think you've done a great job of capturing several of the themes in A Matter of Life and Death, and tying them in with Good Omens - both what we've seen so far and what we're likely to see in S3! :) I grew up in Sweden watching loads of old British movies, and have seen several of the great Powell & Pressburger ones. AMoLaD is probably my favorite, and I have seen it several times. Much like GO, I get more out of each viewing, both in terms of details and just seeing some themes differently. There is so much in AMoLaD that brings to GO to mind, in no order: Organizations that see individuals as pawns; questioning and arguing with heaven; someone's "law" not being the same as moral "right;" creating one's own side; humans winning by working together and defining their own side; Heaven vs Earth; Love is sacrifice; stopping time (and time in general); actions & choice of bravery changing outcomes; the use of color for earth vs. the starkness (and white suits) of heaven; references to Shakespeare & other poets; the first scene (universe voice over); the camera obscura "god's" view; using the same actors in multiple roles; mixing humor with some very deep topics; nations representing different personalities and focus; and yes the chess book. :) Above all it's about love, love over-coming all, and those who believe in true love are stronger together. I can't agree more: If you haven't seen it yet, find it and watch it. If you have seen it in the past, watch it again. :) And then watch some of their other movies, like "I know where I'm going" and "Canterbury Tale." I have a whole list of quotes and themes from P&P movies that apply to GO.

Um... I don't know if you've already considered this, but we already HAD a trial. And they both, in a way, sacrificed themselves for humanity and the ability to stay on Earth and be together (though they weren't thinking of it that way, maybe, at the time) at the end of Season 1. We also saw Gabriel's trial, in Season 2, and his willingness to go to Hell (sacrifice himself for love). I'm not sure if this means we'll see some blend of both versions in Season 3, or if they're done with trials. I also have this theory that the sacrifice for Season 3 was already made, and we just haven't realized it, yet, because it hasn't been revealed. Guess we'll all see come Season 3. :)

I think god in this show is the equivalent of a person playing sims (at least in s2). But as I've heard in other movie about friendship between an angel and a demon: Angel: "but if you control people and their lives, why don't you make them good and let them do what ever they want? Why don't you take control?" God: "have you seen how many of them are down there? And to think I'd have to lead everyone myself and not let them do anything? I'd go crazy!" Angel: "but... you're the creator... without you..." God: "without god's will not a single grass would move. Exactly." (Or something like this, I can't remember exactly, but this is essentially the conversation) I think this could work in Good Omens too. Without god's will the world and people wouldn't exist, yet god doesn't lead everybody directly. His will is that everybody has their own free will. Whoa, this was way more spiritual than I thought it would be. Great video as always!

the law is a convention decided by the few to organize the many, unemotional and depersonalized, which is sometimes correct and often, unfortunately, is f***ing not. I imagine Crowley's fall can be attributed to the second case, he is a victim of the system. Love, friendship and loyalty between people who live each other emotionally and personally, know each other, help each other, argue maybe sometimes but at the same time appreciate each other, however, can never, never, never be wrong. And it's stronger.

(Long comment follows.) I watched the P&P film on your recommendation (both here and in other videos ;-) ). I do think it likely we will see a Trial in S3. I would like to know more about Crowley’s Fall, but I also see another possibility. Perhaps a trial will come towards the END of the contemporary action. Not sure what will trigger it - probably Aziraphale’s attempts to “fix” heaven and The Plan; messing that up like when the Heavenly Courier misses Peter in his fall through the fog and the un-Plan-ned meeting between Peter and June happens, and like when A&C thwart the Great Plan in S1. But I imagine both Azi and Crowley being involved, like June being outside the surgical theater and being summoned to testify. At first, Peter offers to ascend the Stairway to Heaven by dying, but he is restrained and June is then questioned. She does mount the stairway; her sacrifice is accepted. Perhaps Azi will be the apparent defendant and victim, but it will be *Crowley* (the one who wears June’s hairstyle Before the Beginning) who steps in to be the sacrifice! An angel being selfless would / could be expectable, but a *demon*?! THAT would have impact on the Court! I imagine (and it breaks my heart) that, like June, quiet tears will start to trickle down Crowley’s cheeks as he stoicly says Good Bye to Aziraphale. The Stairway of Death/Judgment will lurch to a halt…. Freedom is granted. Love wins. I know we speculate about humans needing to have a big part to play in the salvation of the Good Omens World. Perhaps it will be explicitly the work and influence of humans that allow Crowley to make this sacrifice? And that will be how the World comes to share in the Victory? Crowley has come so far! When he’s called nice, he has moved from “I’m not nice! [body slams A]” to “I’m not… either [‘good’ or a ‘lad’]. But thanks. [gracious smile to Ms. Sandwich]”.

This is my take: I've long thought that the whole angels and demons thing came from the transition of polytheism to monotheism - it's a polytheistic holdover, An advantage of polytheism is that it's a match with the world we're in. Rotten things happen? Then the gods were angry. Probably for petty and stupid reasons, but then, the gods are petty and stupid beings. Once monotheism comes in, one God that's all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, and then the world we have? Mismatch. Technically, theodicy. But you can use the polytheistic reasoning within monotheism by having angels and demons, and using that sense of many divine beings in conflict to get you the mess of the world we have. But then this leads to another major problem: As Crowley observes early in S2E1, the angels and demons system is all pointless. But what I see is that GO has a brilliant approach to the theodicy problem. Crowley has by far the best moral character of all demons and Aziraphale has by far the best moral character of all angels. A low bar in both cases, but the point is that it's their interactions with humans that lead to that. Interactions that other angels and demons are missing and are clueless about. And Adam Young turned off his antichrist destiny because he was human - Aziraphale said it outright when they were winged in the clouds. Much as Shax talks of us humans coming up with worse things than demons do and Crowley talks of our beating him to the Spanish Inquisition and WWII, we also can see in this series that being human can mean having compassion and building strong moral character in a way not just the demons but also the angels don't seem to be able to manage.

This post has not got much to do with this video, but I had to tell somebody this idea of mine. The more I think of it, the more I am convinced that the Metatron has chosen coffee for Az and Death for Crowley, who is in fact left alone with the angel of death in the shop. She wants to get both (she has witnessed their kiss from outside the window), but Crowley tells her that us doesn't include her. So Crowley will ideally die. He's always been the sacrifical victim, after all. Maybe a Jesus who didn't want to drink the cup. He may possibly resurrect, but at a price. I still can't fathom what Az will be able to do about it. The bitterest sorrow is that of who remains behind. Unrequited love lasts forever.

Besides, Myrrh was used to embalm mummies in ancient Egypt because of its scent, and Neil did say that Muriel is perfumed. Oh, no, Aziraphel does love his Demon. Unrequited love will befall both, in turns. I do not see them together in a traditional way. However, there might be a form of togetherness at a higher level. They will not give up on each other so easily. But someone will have to be rescued. In the end, Good Omens is all about the power and helplessness of love, and so will be season 3.

Wow, how can one think of all of this and have it put together so perfectly !? a) Neil Gaiman is really an absolute, nearly supernatural genius or b) unbelievably lucky that everything falls into place like that with the things that are already there!

My view is, we already saw Crowley coming to Heaven by his own will by an elevator, witnessing a trial there (even if only as a playback), then coming back to Earth to Aziraphale. I see "A Matter of Life on Death" as a clue to season 2, already used. It might not foreshadow anything in season 3, actually.

That could be! Most of the "clues" could be for season 2, more than season 3.

I’ll have to watch that movie! You’ve brought up one thing that I don’t understand: the blurb describing season 3. “The plans for Armageddon are going wrong. Only Crowley and Aziraphale working together can hope to put it right.” Doesn’t that mean that they’re trying to START Armageddon? Or Aziraphale is and is trying to get Crowley to help him?
@Sendarya

It is quite confusingly written, and it does seem like they would want the plans to go wrong. I don't know why it's written that way!

Thanks for this, it's brilliant and thought provoking 🌟🌈💖I'd love it if Aziraphale brings down the system. If he ditches that part of his belief system which attaches him to heaven, I think it would balance him much more with Crowley, and would ensure they can be together ❤

I wonder why they'd use American posters? I didn't even know it had a different name in the US I do like the film a lot, it's very weird. That one scene where they're playing table tennis.. I hadn't thought of references to this film but it makes sense, and I hope we do see a trial, I hope a flashback to Crowley's trial as there are so many questions about his fall. And his lack of certain memories.

Unless they get eternity together in Heaven after they die, like in "Memories of Eden" I want them to get eternal lives on Earth for as long as it survives. 😢

Aziraphale and Crowley were already on trial at the end of season 1. To have another trial for basically the same reason would be too repetitive, so probably not. I can see a sacrifice or some grand gesture or declaration. Most likely on Azi's side, as Crowley already made his move. I can imagine season 3 ending with God and Satan going away on a lengthy vacation (or forever) and Aziraphale and Crowley being put in charge of Heaven and Hell respectively. Their jobs would keep them apart but they would be able to make their own rules, so that no one could protest against them being a couple. They could live together on Earth and commute to Heaven/Hell for work.

@@Sendarya I watched this amazing movie last night, and coincidentally tonight read the Google docs essay by Ariaste about “The Magic Trick You Didn’t See,” and the confluence of the two lit up my brain like Times Square on a summer night!! I loved the creative beautiful weirdness of the movie, and was speculating about parallels and clues, likely to Crowley… but when I read the “Magic Trick” essay tonight, I realized- Aziraphale is Peter! PETER BELIEVES HIS EXPERIENCE IS REAL. But Dr. Reeves says it isn’t, that it’s a medical condition. We’re shown that the heavenly judge is actually Peter’s surgeon. June doesn’t seem to remember the fantastical events, even as a dream. And all the statues on the heavenly stairway, according to the Wikipedia on the movie, are famous people with neurological conditions, supporting that Peter IS actually having medical hallucinations, not reality. What if Neil’s reason for connecting this movie to GO is that some of S2, that Aziraphale believes is real, ISN’T? Like the magic trick theory essay? It had caught my attention and caused much consternation that Aziraphale (in the Final 15) said 3 particularly non-Aziraphale-like things to Crowley: (1) “Obviously you said no to Hell, YOU’RE the BAD GUYS.” ???? Pardon my expression, but there’s No Way in He!! that any amount of psychological manipulation or threat would make Aziraphale say THAT to Crowley… He does NOT actually see Crowley as one of the bad guys. The cognitive dissonance he’d feel would make him unable to sell it, even if he was pushing Crowley away to protect him from the Metatron. (2) “You can be my second-in-command”?? Why the sudden regression to “angels are better than reformed demons?” Why not, “We can do it together, and let them think what they like”? (3) And, really, why would Aziraphale need to highlight that “quaint human expression” of ‘hold that thought’ as if it was fairly new to both of them? They’ve both been around modern humans too long, they’ve probably heard it dozens of times. (But the Metatron hasn’t…) But… if the Metatron is messing with his memories, through the Book of Life, Aziraphale would be like an inverse of Peter. The B-side of the album, the sad song to Peter’s happy one. Peter believed a “realistic” unreal experience that saved his relationship; Aziraphale believes a “realistic” unreal experience that is destroying his. Peter fought with all his mind and will and strength to stay with his beloved. We know that Aziraphale would too. Unless someone is interfering. And maybe memory changes are the interference. What if… what if the reason Crowley so significantly says, “You can’t leave the bookshop” is because of all those journals Aziraphale has been keeping? What if, like in the book/movie “The Notebook,” Crowley has been helping Aziraphale hold onto his true memories through those journals? (I’m branching out from the Google docs essay now with my own ideas here lol) What if the reason Aziraphale backs away from the Metatron (after M re-enters so coolly), looks around frantically at the bookshop as if he wishes he could grab something important, and asks plaintively what will happen to the shop (whew! Pardon the run-on!) What if it’s because he realizes that reality is becoming confusing again and he sort of remembers that something here would help him sort it out? What if when Crowley says, “I understand better than you do,” it’s because he knows and remembers this time, he knows what is going on, and knows that Aziraphale isn’t to blame for what he’s saying (as much as it hurts!) because it’s the Metatron’s rewrite coming out of Aziraphale’s mouth?? But the Metatron is playing a chess game that’s a Matter of Life and Death. He tricks Aziraphale into taking the Stairway/Elevator to Heaven, like the Conductor that keeps trying to trick Peter. Ohhh… Does that set Crowley up to be June, ready to sacrifice their own life to save their beloved…?💔 Or is he the Doctor (David Tennant, the Doctor!? 😅), the opponent in the chess match, using all his wits to outmaneuver his opponent? I’m going to see if I can find any other old books or classic movies referenced in GO (in the opening, maybe?) that are about someone losing their memory, and perhaps being reminded somehow. You’re welcome to run with this too, if you think there’s anything to it! Sorry for the long essay- I hope you find my response! I love how you research connections, and it’s inspired me to take some deep investigative dives too. I have a particularly involved one I’d also like to share with you, about the Angelic Playlist and the 12 pages of song research and connections I found, including another old movie! Maybe through the Discord (if I could figure out how lol)?

@@Sendarya Hi, I watched the brilliant movie a few nights ago, and had an inspiration about how it might connect. I went overboard last night writing waaay too long of a comment here to tell you my theory.
