Here's a simple shootout between two amazing Goodalls, with entirely different tonewoods.
Featuring a 2003 Cedar top with East Indian Rosewood back and sides (my guitar) against a 2005 Italian Spruce top with Honduran Rosewood back and sides (borrowed from a friend).
Audio is recorded via a Zoom H1n, so the quality isn't the best as I wasn't at home with my studio mics.
I got my Goodall used and it's a player's guitar, with plenty of dings and scratches. It had a loose portion of the X brace which I glued back together. Other than that, the tone is just unbelievable. People who say a Goodall is like the grand piano of acoustic guitars are not lying.
To my ears, the spruce/HR sounds brighter, with more mids but less bass. The cedar/EIR sounds warmer and more bassy. I think the cedar/EIR is perfect for solo finger style music, but may get a bit harsh when strummed hard. The spruce/HR may sound better in a band due to the presence of more mids. I still prefer my Goodall (cedar/EIR) and it's the first cedar top guitar I've owned.
Hope this video helps if you intend to get a Goodall, or if you want to hear the difference between a cedar and a spruce top. There are a lot of variables, and KZbin audio compression doesn't do them justice.
