I was also struck by the great synth soundtrack- so much so that I tracked down the composer and emailed him. He regards the time period fondly though thought the movie was terrible. He tracked the entire soundtrack on a Yamaha DX7. He continues to compose with more orchestral leanings. He also provided a couple trivia tidbits. He was the voice of the monster and he did some foley work on the film as well. He also let slip that in the 80’s he played synthesizer for a band called “Balance”

Back in 1987, my dad brought this movie home from the video rental store when I was seven years old. Thank you for scratching a 33 year old mental itch that I never could reach. 😃
@toubenzucaere6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the wall of text in advance, but I really wanted to comment on this video/movie as I can barely express how happy I am for Star Crystal to be featured on your channel, Cecil. Your channel is one of my favorite things on KZbin as it is, but with this video, I'm compelled to write this overly long comment instead of just keeping on lurking as I did for the past few years. So here is the story of why I fell in love with this movie: For some background: Once a week I'm having a movie night with one of my best friends (+ irregularly being joined by other friends and my wife) where we usually watch two or three movies, and we have been doing this for more than a decade. Needless to say that we have watched quite a bunch of movies over the years. When you do watch this many movies, then you get a feeling for what to expect from a movie in terms of script/plot, the characters (+ characters' development) and the general checklist of what is to be included in a movie depending on its genre. Therefore, one of the biggest things I (or rather: we) appreciate in a given movie is the ability to excite us with being somewhat unpredictable and showing us things we haven't seen before (or showing things in a way we haven't seen before). This also opened us up more and more over time towards a taste for b movies, as those feel as if being less tied down to the rules of what is supposed to be in a movie, as well as how things are supposed to be done. B movies can be a lot of unintentional fun, too, of course, which makes some of them worth watching doubly so. This brings me to Star Crystal: Watching this, we were sort of happy from the start, as there was a lot of stuff to riff about (As examples which you didn't mention: "Mars", despite the red filter they layered over the film, has somewhat blue sky in some shots and features clouds in the sky. It also is partly transparent in the last shot from space where the ship leaves the planet. The escalator scenes in the space station look like they were filmed in a mall. The sound design, among them the laser "pew pew" sounds, were highly joyful for their simplicity. The "space science" is laughable, as Newton's laws of motion apparently don't apply to future technology, and the "meteor storm" had us breaking up due to its "physics" that practically ignore the amount of kinetic energy that space debree usually has. Etc.), but the magic moment happened when the alien star crystal grows a concience and befriends the two remaining crew members, going so far as to possibly sacrificing itself in order to give them a chance to return to earth. This left turn totally blew us away and we spent the last ten minutes of the movie shouting at the tv if this was seriously happening. When the credits started to roll with the most epic sort-of-self-referential 80s song imaginable, we were literally on our feet and close to tears of joy because we were riling each other up so much in disbelief of what this movie has just presented us with. To be honest with anybody who actually reads this wall of text, watching this alone (or with a mindset different from what I/we had), it wouldn't have had the same impact, but in this pretty much perfect setting, we were simply swept up and blown away by the ludicrous plot, and thus we fell madly in love with this shitty little b movie. Sadly, we didn't start doing this from the beginning of our movie nights, but for the past two years now, we've been documenting the movies we watched with quality/entertainment scores and some minimalistic notes on what we liked, what we disliked and what we "learned" from the movie (partly in trying to not forget about movies too easily and partly in order to make each other laugh a bit with that last "learned"-section). I will leave you with what I learned from this movie: "Conflict is often a lack of information. Though, of course, I’m only paraphrasing the words of our savior, the translucent glowing testicle alien space Jesus who calls himself Gar."
@TheDavestohler4 жыл бұрын

The thing is I don't even believe they went that far, as they either split the ship in half and attached both halves on the doors, or the even more cheaper, lazier way, they made one door and than edited it to be two by flipping it in editing, cause the shapes and such look perfectly mirrored. Also, human evolution becoming Bible Study feels...strangely accurate for how were going right now...
