As kids in the 70s and 80s, we were always betting on who was going to be the "next Bruce Lee." Some were in the Chuck Norris camp; some chose Jackie Chan, Gordon Liu, or Jim Kelly. I was all in for James Ryan. It's possible I put my money on the wrong horse.

I am old enough to have gone to the cinema to see this movie. Not having seen enough martial arts movies I had no perspective. I still love the movie cause of the emotional connection I have to it. He needed a bit of acting lessons but he had a good look and charisma. I think in the right movie he could have been huge. I like him and I'm bummed he never really took off.
@paulallen8109
@paulallen8109 4 жыл бұрын
@@GoodBadFlicks I always place him in the "could-have-been-huge" or "Fate never let lady Fortuna shine on him" bracket. I have a feeling that had he appeared in some Hollywood production, like say a John Carpenter movie, Sam Raimi, Walter Hill or even a Roger Corman production he either would have landed decent roles or at least become a cult-actor like Harry Dean Stanton, James Remar and Bruce Campbell - and I do believe that James Ryan is a better actor than Bruce Campbell who pretty much knows his limitations and has made his entire career from it. Had he become a "cult-actor" it's quite possible somebody like Quentin Tarantino would have wanted him in some role in one of his films. Alas it wasn't to be... The little I've managed to read about him tells that he's doing some acting in tv dramas, stage plays, acting coaching for young actors in drama classes, script writing and some directing. Apparently he also wrote a novel. Looks like he's busy at least. I also wonder if his nationality (South African) pretty much ruined his chances because most Hollywood studios wanted absolutely nothing to do with any South African well into the 1990's.

I recall reading about how they shot the "bullet-time" (two decades before the Matrix) at some site a few years back. This was one of the few memorable things from the movie which stuck with me ever since I saw it on late night cable tv as a kid. They were pretty clever (I believe this is sometimes called "guerrilla film-making") and basically placed a camera sideways and simply filmed a bullet dropped through a gun barrel which exited with the always present invisible force of gravity. Naturally they added some powder to the barrel so that it appeared as if it was really being fired. Since they filmed it in high speed it was simple to slow it down slightly. But what about the bullet flying through the air itself? Clever too. They simply placed the bullet at the center of a wheel of plexi glass which was mounted on a cart. It was rotated by a mechanism driven by the wheels of the cart being pushed forward. The camera was placed in the car and was close enough to follow the bullet as it "flew through the air" and the cart simply pushed/pulled through the room. Again only the proper amount of lighting and slow motion meant the plexi glass isn't seen and the "pre-Matrix bullet time" appears real. Another thing I noticed while watching a few scenes a few days back. When Steve Chase goes to the "gypsy camp"(?) to get Gypsy-Billy into his team a medley of songs/tunes are heard as he passes the other gypsies(?). One lady listens to Bob Dylan as she hangs up her laundry to dry (an in-joke by the film makers I guess), some gypsy "connoisseur" listens to Aida by Giuseppe Verdi (classic piece) and yet another listens to some bluegrass music which I could have sworn I've heard someplace else. I can't really slander a movie which puts in small details like that - at least not completely. :)

Speaking of the "villain explaining evil plan to hero" trope, I get that recently. Apparently in writers' minds, they're the same kind of people, so all those world domination plans should sound really attractive to heroes, and the explanation tours are indeed recruiting ads. They just didn't always do a good job writing this idea convincingly to us.
